This diamond buying guide shows you how GIA diamond grading certification works. Learn about 4c’s of diamonds, diamond clarity scale, diamond color grade, and diamond cut grade so you know how to choose and buy a diamond.
In this short video, you will master the basics of reading a GIA certificate, understand GIA diamond grading chart, and become familiar with the 4Cs of diamond quality - Diamond Cut scale, Diamond Clarity grade, Diamond Color scale, and Diamond Carat weight.
If you are wondering what is the best diamond color, or what is the best clarity of a diamond, or what is the best diamond cutting, here is the diamond quality guide video that we have prepared for you.
JannPaul strongly believes in educating our clients about diamonds, giving you unbiased and honest diamond buying advice, and allowing you to understand better and thus making a more informed decision in choosing your perfect diamond.
From this video, you will learn to read GIA cut grade chart that ranges from “excellent” to “poor” diamond cut scale. Out of the 4cs of diamonds, the cut of a diamond is the most important. The better the diamond cut grade, the more brilliant, fiery and scintillating the diamond will be. However, you will learn from the video that not all “Excellent” cut grade gives out the same brilliance and scintillation because among the “Excellent” diamond cut grade, there are good excellent and bad excellent cut grade. This is why these terms like “Super Ideal Cut”, “Ideal Cut” and “Normal Triple Excellent” diamond cut scale comes about.
Besides teaching you how to read a GIA certificate, we will also go through the GIA color scale so you know what’s the best diamond color you should go for when shopping for a perfect diamond for your engagement ring. See the difference in diamond color grade scale that starts from colorless range like color scale D, E, F through all the way down to light color scale Z. Basically, the lower the color, the more yellowish the diamond appears.
In this video, you will also learn about what is the best diamond clarity scale to look for. We will talk about the GIA clarity diamond chart and then you will be familiar with terms like VVS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, and I1 diamond clarity. You will discover from this video that sometimes a VVS2 diamond may have more red markings than a VS1 diamond so you should only use the clarity plot diagram to see whether the inclusion is but not to use it to judge its severity. Two diamonds of VS1 clarity grade may also have different types of inclusion so you should ask your jeweler to show you the inclusions under magnification loupe.

how about the crown/pavillion 35.5/40.6 ? Is it a good balance ? Looking at the figure it suggests a more firey stone and higher scintillation but less light return ?

Is a 10x loupe large enough to read the GIA number on the girdle?

When choosing a diamond, should I look for the ideal arrow pattern when looking at the crown with a microscope?

Hi John, Yes, you may use the microscope to anaylze the symmetry of the arrow patterning on the diamond. It would be much easier to anaylyze it under the Hearts & Arrows scope kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdl2fcydsNTMXas.html Do remember to chech your diamond under the Ideal and ASET scope to analyze its light performance. A poor light performing diamond may still have symmetrical Hearts & Arrows. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npqPgNdmz83SqnU.html&t

Hi Tina, for a 35.5 crown and 41.5 pavilion, it is considered a steep/deep diamond. A useful tool you can use to check the proportions is the HCA tool, www.pricescope.com/tools/hca Cheers, JannPaul
