Jante Law, or janteloven, is a set of rules that underpin Scandinavian society. In countries like Denmark and Norway, the law of Jante seems to help create equality - but at what expense to the individual?

In Minnesota, where many Scandinavians settled, the Janteloven is alive and well. At best: humility and concern for the whole. At worst: a cold nightmare of emotional withholding and undermining. Hi!

I think most people misunderstand the Law of Jante - possibly even Aksel Sandemose himself. As one who has grown up in Denmark - and one who has been living in Jante (Nykøbing Mors, Denmark) - I can tell it is most of all about equality. It has nothing to do with ambitions, but everything to do with behaviour. The problem is not, wether or not you have ambitions, success or wealth - the problem arise, if you force your ambitions, success and wealth into the throat of everybody else. If you threat everybody, as you expect to be threated yourself, you will face no problems. But if you act like you are better or more important than other people, you will face negative reactions. And even worse if you claim to better or more important than other people. If you have the opinion, that you have higher standards, moral, effort etc. it means nothiing to say it. Deeds say more than a thusand words. Act accordingly and be a role model instead. You can be wealthy, dignifed, generous, ambitious etc. without acting excessively grandiouse. Be a nice chap,.not a jerk.

I think Jantelagen is great. Since, you don't need to talk about your success and achievements, or trying to fit yourself to society's success criteria, you are allowed to go on your own path, creating your own success criteria. Without and comparison. You don't need anybody's confirmation and be told: " congratz you are successful" because nobody talks about it. I think Jantelagen in an indirect way makes you focus on yourself, what you want, what do like to do in life without any comparison to others.

The Laws of Jante are pretty much universal, they exist to some extent in every society around the world. While I agree that humility and modesty are virtues and that arrogance and conceitedness are flaws of character, the Laws of Jante are not good, because they are in place to make you feel worthless and to make you not acknowledge own achievements, not develop your obvious talents and to squander your ambitions. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with developing your talents and being ambitious. You should acknowledge and be well aware of your strengths just as you should be aware of your weaknesses. It's completely fine to be better at something than someone else, the world needs people who are skilful in various disciplines, ambitious and aware of how and where they can best put their talents to best use. You don't need to be braggadocious about your talents and achievements, in fact being so is a sign of weakness and lack of confidence, desperately seeking the praise of others. But you should definitely still acknowledge your talents and achievements, cultivate it, develop it, be ambitious about it and reach your potential.

"You don't encourage greatness" - That's her take on this law btw It's not some law all scandinavian people oblige at all times, and it does not discourage greatness in any way. Most, if not all scandinavians are aware of this "law", but there are not many people who give it much thought. If you are not from scandinavia it's easier to look at it this way. The law is an attempt at describing a part of the scandinavian mentality which makes us think twice before we speak. It's not about supressing people or discouraging people from greatness, merely a reminder not to think too highly of yourself - which I think is a good message. Just don't confuse this message with discouraging confidence or anything like that.

No it's way harsher than just being humble. It boils down to bullying talented and ambitious people in order to make them conform. The laws of jante pretty much state that it's wrong to be talented and ambitious, that such people shouldn't feel that they are good at anything, that they know anything, that they are worth anything, that they matter to anybody or that they have anything to teach others. That's not about humility, that's more about the envy and jealousy of the average Joe. Janteloven is universal no matter who and what time. We all represent jante but we are all individuals. There are no real group against the individ. Supressed sexuality is central. The novel from 1933 were inspired by Freud, Odepus complex and potty training. Freud found psychology while Sandemose found sociology. Both subjects are universell. In the novel from 1931 the main character stabs John Wakefield to death due to a menage a trois. In 1933 novel the opening starts with «I will now tell the full story». In love affairs women reject men. Men learn from early childhood (Odepus). Father and men become enemies. Thus Wakefield were killed. Sandemose was an intellectual. He fled to Sweden from the nazis. Sandemose later said that the nazis were the jante people to the extreme. The nazis set the arian race as standard. This is what janteloven does. Janteloven set a social standard. The nazis set conformity and leveled people to a standard.

Might this simply be _your_ interpretation of an interpretation? The text seem to stir up envy and bitterness. Not exactly kid-friendly, and many ppl overlook how it has participated in shapin top societies with equal interpretation chances for all. This even hints that maybe Sandemose himself, may have missed Janteloven's real essence. Balance. Braggers should realize that failing to live up to their own hype _will_ weaken trust. It's not about holding anyone down. Naturally, investing in a truly impressive bragger is preferable over someone who's all talk. While some behaviors might relate to social norms, Janteloven isn't at play here, though it often gets blamed due to varying interpretations. No rule justifies bad behavior or irresponsibility. Many fail to look past the satirical haze and recognize that people _are_ encouraged to stand out and make contributions. Which is what Janteloven truly is about. I am not only focusing on myself. Others are valuable too. Please, take pride in your fishing skills. You've earned it! And it's crucial that you too tell yourself! Because once the lights are on, you'll see no "law", only that _you've_ been the only one in your way! My interpretation of the social structure is just as valid as Sandemose's. However, the difference is that his portrayal erroneously convinced many of strict rules to be followed verbatim, and a doctrine of self-restraint, likely traumatizing generations. The harsh text of Janteloven's, by championing genuine equal opportunities for everyone, ironically grants the very chance to liberate oneself from the harsh text 😂

The individual's *real* obstacle to success or happiness almost always lies within the individual itself. In quite small doses I’d say it can be good, because it keeps people humble. But it is a terrible thing in large doses, it is unduly regulating people guilty of the grave crime of breaking social codes and not thinking and acting inside of the tiny box that many Scandinavians think and act within. As a result they outwardly all sort of seem like the same person. It’s like they dislike variety 😛 I think it’s quite small-minded, ungenerous, petty, spiteful, and selfish. Yes, you guessed it, I’m from a small Scandinavian town. Ugh. They have a strong sense of their views as being advantageous and correct as long as they are more numerous. Although I say this, I believe a certain balance between homogeneity and pluralism is the ideal, and keep in mind how important the variables of homogeneity and small populations are for the success of the Scandinavians. They don't conform to the latest pop-culture, fashion items, music, sports and hobbies, instead they learn to speak klingon, play the piano or the violin, do well in maths and score high on their SATs, so they are bullied so that they learn to at least conform to the Laws of Jante! If you think this crap is fine, go say it out loud to someone you don't know. Say it out loud to your kid, for Christ's sake. It's obviously messed up. If everyone taught that to your kid they'd develop a personality disorder (as surely Scandinavians do). Narcissistic - I mean Scandinavian mentality is based on insecurity - spiteful jealousy, if it weren't evident from these asshole Jante laws. As far as the happiness statistics, what they don't tell you is that Denmark, Norway, and Sweden consistently rank #63, 64, and 65 (dead last) in ease to make friends, and variety of things to do. @@k.c7655 Yes, Scandinavians are ashamed to stand out, obviously. This perpetuates spitefulness toward both others who are perceived to stand out, as well as those who chastise oneself for standing out. The biggest problem is that because everyone is inherently different. We are all individuals, particularly in a country like Sweden, which decided to open it's doors to immigrants. How can you expect all these people to become invisible? How long will a person allow others to dictate their own thoughts, behavior, and appearance before they realize how stupid it is, being as their judgment it's totally relative, and individual as well? That's the rub. Who the fuck do you think YOU are to judge me? You'd better be perfect. Most Swedes think they are perfect enough to judge, ostracize, and destroy the lives of people who don't meet their expectations. It's far being common courtesy. That's narcissism. It's their own insecurity trying to master itself into confidence, but it comes out as arrogance at best, and racism, etc. At worst. They act as if I should live my life for it to suit other people. Which made us all more aware I think, and made us look at our society and ourselves in a new way, because noone before him, had put it on paper like that. But they (the rules) reflect our culture and mindset very well. If you brag about something, people will turn their back on you and you will be excluded from the 'group' and they will talk trash about how you think you're better than everyone and that is not ok. Scandinavian countries are not successful because of Jante's Law, but because of a small population and higher country revenue. I think Scandinavia are the only countries on earth where there is no government deficit. Data clearly shows correlation between wealth and happiness. There are countries like Switzerland which doesn't follow this model and still displays similar results in terms of society. Add refugees, lack of employment, high inflation, lack of money and your utopia quickly collapses.
