E-paper or electronic paper display devices and modding Android to expand functionality. Featuring two ebook readers that run Android under the hood and modding to expose full access to Android. Plus a Yotaphone that already has full Android and can run that on it's e-paper screen including playing video at a decent frame rate.

Further point of clarification: What the Pebble Watch used, Memory LCD, _did_ qualify as e-paper. The key points of e-paper are: 1) They primarily rely on ambient light for the user to see their content (sometimes a front light) rather than emissive technology 2) They use little or no power to retain their content What you are thinking of is an electrophoretic display, with E Ink being the trademark of the leading manufacturer of those displays. There are also other e-paper technologies, the most famous of the rest (though not particularly commercially successful) probably being the interferometric Mirasol.

Morrisons use electronic ink displays for their prices. This is a very good use of e-ink. They can just reprogram the price rather than removing, printing and placing each small piece of papers in their price slots.

The biggest problem with most of these devices is that it is almost impossible to connect to the outside world. That is what you need when you want to reuse them as a display for something else, to display data for example. I like to reuse such device as display for my solar panel project to show some information about the system. For example with an UART connected to a microcontroller.

e-ink gets so much undue hate, I think as a technology it's gotten better over the years, but also think that fact kind of misses the point; e-ink displays can do what no other display can - display information on a zero power budget, and display active information of a very low power budget.

Everything is old and less from the perspective the latest and greatest new tech. Nothing wrong with appreciating the new. But there is something about taking old tech and expanding it beyond it's original limitations. This is the perspective that I'm sharing, and why Android 2.1 is awesome on a previously limited ebook only device. Janus is a mythological figure who can see both the past and the future.
