What kind of output does it have? I like the form factor. Would be awesome if it is modernized with usbC input/output.

I love the convertible laptop format, It makes so much sense. Versus the yoga format where you flip the thing in half and now you have an exposed keyboard waiting to get damaged and dirty on whatever surface you put it on and yes in some cases still functional so don't bump any keys. I've been running around with a GPD pocket three for the past year and every time somebody sees it they're like what is that thing. And I can't help but think that is what laptops could've been but instead the convertible format didn't go very far other than a select few models and it's not like it's that much more complicated to build.

I still have my original Zaurus, in good condition and running X11 instead of Qtopia, complete with a suite of applications I wrote. It's a cool little thing. I used to use it as a second screen at my desk, like export a window from my desktop with a reference manual open while I was working, or display system stats from my PC on it. Or I'd use it as a book reader. I even made it work as a wireless controller to pilot a miniature submarine I was working on, complete with live video from underwater. But while it could do a little bit of everything, it wasn't particularly good at any of those tasks, so I eventually stopped trying to use it as a PDA and got an old Palm m500 super cheap. I'm pretty sure I used that Palm at least 10X more than I ever used the Zaurus, since it was really good at things I genuinely needed. Meanwhile, with the Zaurus it was a struggle to find ways it could be useful to me, and what I found was mostly just novelties I could live without. Its deskop-linux-like community software ecosystem never got a chance to flourish, because of Trolltech and then Google placing profit above the common good. I still wonder what could have been, without corporate interference.

Yes! Finally someone in recent times interested in the Sharp Zaurus. I bought 2 of these in 05, 06 and they were very fun at the time, There were many different "ROMs" made for these back in the day. it's too bad Sharp discontinued these after the SLC3200. I heard that Sharp Japan developed these clamshells to show off their LCD screen technology in those days. I have a 3100 and a 3200. Both with expired batteries. I have since taken out the batteries, but replacement batteries are not available in stores these days. There used to be a large forum with many users with their Zaurii devices. The main forum was called OESF forum. I think that stood for "Open Embedded Software Foundation" It may still be on the wayback machine. I don't think anyone ever developed a 'G' driver for WIFI G. By then these were discontinued.

@@JanusCycle Thank you for your reply. Another fun fact is USB is both host and client. I used to take a USB min-mouse with me when I visited my out of town parents. There were compiled Linux distros such ad PDAxrom which gave you a full Linux desktop system but with its limits of this small machine. It runs ARM v5.

Telstra-branded SD card? Intruiguing! Where'd you get this from? Cause that logo is for the largest Telecommunications company here in Australia.

It's from a Telstra T-Hub. Now so obsolete the only remaining useful parts are the power adapter and the SD card.

Excellent narrative and presentation of debugging and getting an old device to work. Always was fascinated reading about these tiny marvels back in the day and now that we have much more powerful phones in our pockets daily, it is a bittersweet joy to mentally return to the days when these highly integrated devices were a practically unattainable curiosity from far away lands. Thank you for the journey!

Awesome video as always! A few small notes: 2:42 if you happen to have a link to the original JP manual, I can let you know how direct the translation is. Something tells me that's not even close to the original though :) 5:12 Windows XP doesn't recognize any of the Linux filesystems, and will just report the partitions as Unknown or RAW. If it were unformatted, the bar above it would be black, and it would say that. I was going to say that I'd love to see Windows 2000 running on this thing, but I don't think there were any publicly available ARM builds...

@@JanusCycle Unfortunately all of those are just explaining various apps/features of the device. None of them seem to talk about the insides in any real way. None of them even have a title similar to the English "Quick Start" one, so either you're missing that one in Japanese (and I couldn't easily find it either), or perhaps this English manual was an original creation, rather than a translation.

Hidden service menus save lives - some time ago I bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. There are no tools for flashing this phone. For my luck there already was installed system with my native language but it was code locked. I found only one video that showed how to access hidden service menu which had an option to wipe data and reset device. So now I am one happy owner of Xperia X2. Anyways, another great video! Glad there is someone with love and enough patience to save such rare devices - pieces of long gone world :)
