🇦🇹 Kaprun is a small town in Upper Austria, not far from Zell am See. In this Austria vlog, I am exploring the famous mountain gorge Sigmund Thun Klamm for a fun Austria walking tour experience. I love this walk on the narrow wooden planks that line the sides of this dramatic mountain gorge in Austria. This Austria travel vlog shows you that Austria can be so much fun and Kaprun is the best travel destination this year that can also be explored in bad weather. So if you are wondering what to do in Austria this summer, check out Kaprun for the most amazing Austria travel memories. This summer in Europe will be special and, even if you just go on an Austria day trip to Kaprun, it's among the best places in Austria to visit. Have the best "Österreich Urlaub" and summer trip in Kaprun!
The Salzkammergut (or Salzburger Land) is a particularly attractive region to visit in Austria. So plan to do a travel walking tour in the most beautiful village in Austria, or hike the Alpine mountains, or swim in beautiful lakes during your next Austria vacation ('Österreich Urlaub' in German). There are so many things to do in Salzburg and the surrounding Salzkammergut region that you don't want to miss.
Today I’m taking you on a travel walking tour through the Sigmund Thun Klamm, a fascinating alpine mountain gorge and a hugely popular tourist destination in Austria. Kaprun is a small town located between Salzburg and Innsbruck in the Pinzgau region in Upper Austria. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Salzburg but you can also come here by train. More on transport and how to get here in my video on Zell am See which is only a short drive away. Kaprun is a year-round sports centre at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and the mountain gorge is located just a 5-minute drive outside of town.
Sigmund Thun Klamm is quite a natural spectacle which you should definitely check out when you are traveling in Austria. The powerful tide of the river Kapruner Ache cut its way through sturdy rock and stones creating a 320-m-long path lined with impressive amounts of water crushing and tumbling down the narrow gap between two high cliffs. A footpath with sturdy wooden footbridges and stairs allows you to safely walk above the water masses and you can feel the force of the water at every step through this magical gorge in Kaprun.
The walk starts at the Kaprun power plant and you will see some turbines on display. It takes about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour to go through the gorge, with another 15-20 minutes to walk back down on a separate hiking path.
The water is deafening. It shoots wildly between the impressive rock walls. Sometimes whirlpools are formed that would sweep away everything that stands in their way. You get great views of the torrent below from the wooden bridges. The steps and planks are secured with railings but you still want to watch out to not slip as the wooden planks can be a bit slippery from the mist that seems to come from all sides.
Please also check out my other videos on my travel to Austria, including my trip to Salzburg and the surrounding mountains and valleys of the Salzkammergut such as Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Gosau, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Gmunden, Zell am See and of course my trip to Vienna - and so much more. Stunning - and great how you can get up close right through the gorge. It is certainly another reason to break a journey between Innsbruck and Salzburg by train. I think over here they would just build an observation platform for a view, but they would not build such a walkway. Thanks for sharing!
