Our family lives a self-sufficient rural life on Sado Island, Japan. In this video, I will show you how I went to a friend's chocolate shop's one year anniversary and performed a mochi pounding performance. We also have a wonderful performance of taiko drums and a video of the beautiful sea of Sado Island, so please watch it. Because I live in a Japanese community, I would often hear the taiko drummers practicing for the Nikkei Matsuri festival. Unfortunately though, they had to move several years ago due to complaints from the neighbors, many of whom are non-Japanese. The Japanese community I live in was greatly affected by the events following WWII. As such many of the Japanese families that lived here moved away, never to return, due to the American stigma against Japanese people. So while the community is technically Japanese, there are very few Japanese people that actually live here. So sadly cultural traditions such as taiko drumming, outside of official performances, are mostly regarded as nuisances. In any case, the taiko drummers were excellent. It's nice to know that there are still some people, albeit a few, who have a regard for their culture instead of the nonsensical modern western traditions. What's the significance of the orange that was meant to be placed on top of the rice cakes?

There are many wonderful taiko players in Japan. Their music is wonderful and inspiring. I want people all over the world to listen to their performance. I would be happy if as many people as possible could feel the wonder of taiko by uploading videos to KZfaq. It is said that by placing mandarin oranges on top of the mochi, descendants will prosper for generations to come.
