♥ 🇯🇵 It’s actually called a castle, but it’s not a castle, it’s a dungeon. Its role is military and defensive.
This wood and plaster architecture is still authentic and dates from feudal times. It is also known by the nicknames "Hakuro-jō" or "Shirasagi-jō", castle of the White Heron or the white egret because of its white color
Moreover, in the city of Himeji, the manhole covers represent the symbol of the egret or the heron.
As it is a defensive site, the moat and numerous ramparts would have pleased Vauban with its fortifications.
