Ramen of course. One of my favorite dishes. But you need to try it in Japan it's just not the same here. I don't really get that bubble tea craze. It's kinda ok but nothing special. And it's too sugary. We have several places here in Berlin that sell it. There are always long lines consisting mainly of Asian girls :)

Definitely, Ramen. It looked very tasty. Also, Deana and Phil, you are so fortunate to be in Germany. Especially, during this pandemic and protest time frame. Germany is so efficient and proactive about tracking COVID... Thanks for showing a sample of how the restaurant was set up and how they take your info. for tracing purposes. Thanks for these videos. Take care.

It's definitely Ramen. If you come back to Düsseldorf you should try the Ramen at Takumi or Takeichi which is far better than Nani Wa in my opinion. Also be sure to try Okonomiyaki (it's kind of a Reibekuchen/Kartoffelpuffer with some toppings and a few more ingredients) which you can eat at a restaurant near Nani Wa on Klosterstraße - it's called 'Yaki the Emon'

I am a savory person but there is a boba place about half an hour from me that make the best tea. You can get varied fruit flavored teas and then the bubbles are also flavored. My favorite combination is mango tea with papaya bubbles!

Boba tea was actually really popular around 2010-2013, but most stores closed after the first hype. Since 2019, it is getting popular again and boba tea shops are opening again. I think the shop in Düsseldorf is one of the rare ones which survived the first hype and is still around.

Yeah. In my small hometown right next to Düsseldorf we had this one Boba store that was always PACKED. Every single time I went past there it was a line of hundreds of people in a town of not even 60k. Everyone I knew went there as well. After a while, for some strange reason the rumor that Boba has a HUGE chance to cause cancer spread around and at least the people I know stopped going there for that reason. I don't know if that was the reason for the fall off, but that what it seems like to me. The current popularity seems to be the way more healthy type of popularity as well. Not just this "craze" that started all of a sudden and quickly falls off, but a steady increase in popularity. This time I honestly don't see Boba going anywhere for a while.

Man, I really miss Düsseldorf. I spend sooo much time on the Immermannstraße. Stopping there after work to grab food, visiting my best friend that worked not to far away and me and my best friend spend every single one of our birthdays for the last 8-9 years in one restaurant or another there. I especially love some of the smaller "family resturants" that are of on the side streets. I remember when I was 12 or so I went there with a friend and his and we ate at one of those smaller restaurant. I just ordered the "daily menu item" they had without knowing what it was. All of a sudden I had this plate with a whole fish, head and all, sitting in front of me and the two women that ran the restaurant were just watching me with anticipation to see my reaction. They even clapped when I cut the head off of the fish. I sadly never found that restaurant again. Such nostalgia on this street alone. Btw: For anyone that wants to go to this street specifically for asian food, make sure its relatively early and visit "Bakery My Hear". Its a japanese bakery, and everything there is amazing. Especially the Macha Melonpan. I'd kill to have that right now.

My work is right around the corner from there. I sometimes forget how lucky me and my colleagues are, being able to get our lunch from these stores, restaurants and take-aways. It's so normal to us. This is also an area where we've been used to seeing a lot of face masks in Germany even before corona. For living there, this used to be a relatively cheap area (compared to other districts of Düsseldorf) as it is part of the sort of sleazy and loud central station area (yet with some quiet and nice side streets), but this is currently changing. The area has become sort of trendy and there are some upscale building projects there (one of them you can see in the background at the Ramen place) - even though there is still some drug dealing and street prostitution going on in the area. It is very urban.

The green tea with the tapioka pearls is called bubbletea in Germany. Some years ago bubbletea shop popped up in many places, the tea was hyped and two years later all of them are vanished. So, i guess, what you consider to "become more popular" is just the rest which was able to survive.

@TheJanstyler Жыл бұрын
Good news, though the hype of 2010-2013 died down and most Boba places shut down, the pace is picking back up. Its getting increasingly more popular again in a "healthy" non "the new thing" way. Its a slower growth, but it feels way more like Boba is here to stay for a long time.

This past December, I and my boyfriend went to a Ramon noodle restaurant in Mystic, CT here to where I live and the size of the bowls 🥣 could have fed a family of five lol it was way too much food for me and of course like Phil my boyfriend inhaled his down . I took the rest of mine in a to go container and heated it up the next day was not the same taste (warning do not reheat Ramon in a microwave 😜)

I hope you guys found the Yabase Sushi Restaurant. To me one of the best Sushi I ever had. It is mostly frequented bei japanese people. That, to me seems a sign for very good quality. If you haven't been there, get back to Düsseldorf soon. It's a must have restaurant. :-)

Seems Phil, is not familiar with onigiri.🍙Man, they are so popular in Japan. It's like a tiny snack, but with rice, nori and fish instead of a sandwich with bread and ham or cheese. I love Asian cuisine, so healthy.

There is a great benefit to being in a town with a rather dedicated non-western 'area' like Dusseldorf. The Japanese Navy arrived in the 1880's. There were larger entries into England and somewhat in France. Germany won favor because of their steel quality (ie, armor plating, gunnery expertise) while the English won most political and military contracts, the French and Germans were favorite (and sometimes dueling) rivals for 'everything else'. The Germans had beaten the French 1870-1871 and eventually this would sway the Japanese Army to favor all-things-German. But it was still The Navy that shipped everything (and everyone) from one place to another. Lotsa budding rivalries between the various Japanese factions, much less the Kaiser and his cousins!

Boba tea became popular in Germany (or at least in Cologne) 8-10 years ago. For a short while shops popped up everywhere, but disappeared as quickly as they came. Probably in part because of media coverage calling it very unhealthy and the caloric intake of a McDonalds combo in a cup. Recently I've seen them make a comeback. AS someone from Cologne it pains me a bit to think you could move to Düsseldorf =;-) But I get it. I don't think there is any other German city that has so many Japanese spcialty shops as Düsseldorf. Plus the Immermann-Str. has a great Burger-place. The only Japanese thing about it are the Wagyu-Burgers they sell.

OK so let me be a little local guide: you missed out on the little onigiri shop WARAKU (immermannstaße 27) und the japanese bakery (only go there before 10.....it is sold out fast....Immermannstraße 36)....also if you are not only there for japanese stuff....Immermannstraße 24 has one of the best burger restaurants in NRW (What´s beef). You had a great pick for your ramen restaurant. Next time i recommend in between eating and shopping that you also go to Oberkassel and visit the EKO-Haus (Haus der japanischen Kultur) and the area around it

Well, it is definitely the largest Japanese community outside of Japan worldwide. But many Japanese prefer to come to Cologne if they want to get to know the country and its people or to study. We have had well over 100 Japanese students as guests in the family over the past 40 years.
