Thank you for being here :) In this video, I visited Katsurahama & Ryoma Sakamoto Memorial Museum in Kochi prefecture.
The day after enjoying Ryugado Cave, I headed to Katsurahama Beach, cherished by Kochi hero Ryoma Sakamoto, a visionary samurai from Kochi who helped overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and laid the foundation for the new Meiji era, from his early years and leaving tosa clan, to the founding of the Kameyama Company, uniting the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance which led to the restoration of imperial rule. A 30-minute drive from the city center brings a promenade with a huge bronze statue of Ryoma, over 10 meters tall. I've seen many bronze statues of significant figures from the Sengoku period and the end of the Edo period in Kochi Prefecture, but this one stands out. Its sheer size reflects the enduring reverence for Ryoma. When I visited in mid-April 2024, there was an event allowing visitors to climb up to the statue, offering a beautiful view of Katsurahama from Ryoma's perspective. A short walk along the coast leads to Katsurahama Inari Shrine, where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.
As an enthusiast of the Bakumatsu(end of edo)period, visiting Ryoma Sakamoto memorial museum was kind of a must for me. After enjoying the scenic views of Katsurahama, I found a box-shaped museum designed to resemble a ship. Inside, you can trace the life and thoughts of Ryoma. The museum houses handwritten letters and artifacts, including a folding screen stained with Ryoma's blood on the assassination. These exhibits made the events of over 150 years ago feel vividly connected to the present. From the top floor of the museum, the view of the Pacific Ocean is vast and beautiful, just as it must have appeared to those who lived for the country during the Bakumatsu period.
