Being cashless abroad is probably bad in any country, but Japan ranks high in the list. If you're visiting shrines, make sure you've got coins too! The self service boxes that sell charms and stuff don't give change. Plus coins make a satisfying sound when thrown into donation boxes. Unless you're rich and don't mind paying in 1,000 yen bills - in which case, the world is your oyster and thanks for contributing to their economy.

Looks like cash is still king in a lot of Japan, particularly on the ferries. I had a similar "pauper" experience a few years ago in central Nagoya trying to find the "right kind of" ATM on a busy Friday evening, luckily found one in time to enjoy a nice meal.

When I first visited Japan in 1995 I rode the Shinkansen north to south. It was amazing. The Shinkansen was largely empty when I travelled, but sometimes an obasan or ojisan would enter my carriage. They were so sweet, they'd say, "Please may I sit with you and practice English". When the waitress came with the food trolley they would ask if they can buy me a coffee, green tea, ice cream etc. I couldn't believe how kind everyone was. I wonder how it would be for you, as a native Japanese, if you approached someone and asked them to lend you some cash for food.

As far as I know, Japan is one of few G7 countries which still using Cash as daily transaction, and I don't know is it expensive to operate ATM onboard ship. Yeah this route is suitable for a person who enjoying life, not in rush.
