What are South America's hidden Japanese colonies and how did they get there? Today we're going to discuss the history of the modestly-sized, but extremely influential Japanese communities in the Latin American countries of Brazil and Peru.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the Japanese communities of Latin America. Thanks for watching!

I'm Brazilian but not of Japanese descent. I lived two years in Japan working for a Brazilian bank that provides services for the Brazilian community in Japan. It's really amazing to go to an ATM and find instructions in Portuguese or to do a driving examination written in Portuguese. Nobody knows anything about baseball in Brazil, but our junior team won the world champioship some years ago. If you look at the photo of that team, every player was of japanese descent from the hinterland of Paraná state.

Levis. H well, no. Patagonia is really big. Goes from mountains to a long steppe. Is called "desert" 'cause 'was really nothing more than steppes, only flat terrain... Argentina and Chile have dry-land like deserts on the north (Antofagasta in Chile, and Great Chaco in Argentina) Meanwhile Patagonia is in the south

Even Japanese people treat him different as foreign. The japanese comunity here in Peru is really united, they even have their own club and schools. it is just amazing. Also, this year the nikkei comunity have celebrated a huge matsuri fro there 100 aniversary.. anyway, sorry for my writing I am still learning english.

So, I'm part of an hidden colony in Brazil? Never knew that... lol. At least, considering how many Nipo-Brasileiros you find in the states of São Paulo and Paraná, cant say it's "hidden". Well, maybe it's the outsiders (North Americans in particular) perceptions of this fact. Its probably related to the lack of historical-geographical knowledge (or lack of interest) of international migration and demographic aspects that constitutes the Southern American countries. The label of "Latin" America, while not exactly wrong, often contributes to these kind of misperceptions. So I'll give a brief and generalized view of how complex is Brazil. The "traditional average brazilian" that is commonly sold is the origin of the demographic formation of Brazil while being a colony of Portugal (1500- ~1850). The 3 basic groups are the Portuguese, Africans and Amerindians (often a mix between the three). They compose the vast majorities and are the traditional population (in the Modern Era) of the States in the North, Northeast and East. The share/proportion of each group of the three vary according to each region. The "immigrant with non-portuguese roots brazilian" that is often unspoken grew after the first waves of immigrants during the XIX century until mid-XX. I cant mention all the groups, cause it's extremely diverse, but the main groups of immigrants were Northern Italians (specially from Veneto and Toscany regions), Germans, Spaniards, Arabs (specially Lebanese and Assyrians), Eastern Europeans (in particular Poles, Ukranians and Lithuanians) and Japanese. They went primarily to the Southern States. The main common factor of the Southern States is that the biggest ethnic group in each one of them are the Northern Italians. The São Paulo State is probably the most complex case. Due to the fact that it's the economical powerhouse of Brazil. It attracted every group mentioned and more, and is greatly influenced by migration of population from other States. But we can say that the distinctive aspect of São Paulo is that half of the Italians, Lebanese and Japanese that came to Brazil went to São Paulo. Some distinctive traditional minority colonies of São Paulo are the Lithuanians (the second biggest Lithuanian colony after Chicago,IL), the Confederate Americans and the Armenians. The Parana State was, as the distinctive aspect of its formation, the main destination for Poles and Ukrainians and the second destination for the Japanese. The Santa Catarina State have the biggest German colony in terms of proportion. Actually, around 1/3 of the population has German background. The Rio Grande do Sul State is characterized too by it's high proportion of population with German heritage (around 20-25%), while having considerable minorities of Azorean Portuguese people. The population of the Center-West States result, mainly, by migration of people from other States in the early 70's. Until this period, it was basically an demographic vacuum. The most recent wave of immigrants (70's to today) are composed by people from other South American countries (especially Bolivians, Peruvians, Argentinians, Paraguayans and Venezuelans), Asians (in particular South Koreans and Chinese), Haitians and Senegalese. Mostly went to the southern states, with the exception of the Venezuelans that went (and is still going) to Roraima (in the North).

What?? Let's not be naive ... America may have its failures but Brazil is not an example at all if you compare its population you will see that 200 million are only 90 million white and that is why you see them so "integrated" in the armed forces but that is what the favelas suffer and I deal with the police is that of a war zone, to stop shitting in the US and that I am not from there but I am very objective

Mariano Sanchez seu inglês não é o melhor. Your English is not the best but I'll assume what you're saying is that successful race integration is a Brazilian myth, which is kinda true but it doesn't tell the whole story. Our history is one of forced mixing of slavers and slaves; get this: Portuguese slavers breeding with slaves from different regions of Africa and different tribes of natives, explains the diversity of populations within Brazil pretty well haha. it is really in our blood to be mixed and absorb other cultures mutating them into our own, we even have a literary term for that "abrasileirar". It is what it is.

In Brazil we don't have this concept of nationality based on ancestry. If you are born in Brazil you are 100% Brazilian, there is no middle term. It's just our mentality. At the same time we are incredibly open to foreigners and foreign cultures and you can see towns in Brazil where people speak Japanese, German, Italian, Ukrainian, Polish and Russian... and all of those people consider themselves Brazilian. I have Portuguese-Spanish ancestry but I don't identify as neither Portuguese nor Spanish, I was born in Brazil therefore I am Brazilian. It's just the meaning of the word for us. We don't have this notion of identifying as multiple nationalities. PS.: it's important to mention though that the Brazilian law of citizenship does have jus sanguinis, meaning that even if one is born outside of Brazil but with Brazilian ancestry then this person has the right to Brazilian citizenship and is considered legally Brazilian.

That's true but it seems to me it was more a lack of articulation of government than anything else. A lot of Japanese were tortured, a lot of them had properties taken by government (and the people it represents). Japanese language was prohibited to be used even among first generation people. That included closure of newspapers and publications. The Reagan administration issue an official apology to the Japanese community there. There is nothing similar in Brazil. After all, if you know Brazilians, they don't apologize. Simply it is not in their culture.

I live a bit outside Nagoya. So while throughout Japan the second language on signs is English, in Nagoya where there are English signs, there's also Portuguese as well. And while this isn't the case at my school, many of my teacher friends have students who are half Brazilian, some of whom don't speak Japanese. Also, in the largest cities in Japan, I've noticed you can often find Peruvian flute players giving street performances near stations, parks, or shopping areas. Although I knew Japan and Peru had large Japanese populations, I didn't expect the opposite to be true before I came here.
