Another story of a predator with power and a whole country full of enablers, and looking the other way. His influence in Japanese pop culture is everywhere, and impossible to avoid. It is truly sad that so many boys were not only abused but actively told by all those around them to just accept the abuse for fame. 😢

The last part where the reporters talk about the cultural aspect that allowed the victims to speak to him was interesting. I remember working in Japan and being surprised that colleagues and friends were seeking me out to talk about mental health issues. Despite the language barrier, they said it was easier speaking to me instead of a Japanese person because they didn't speak about these things in Japan.

As a jpop fan I can agree that this case is indeed an open secret that even fans outside Japan knows. In the entertainment industry, offending Johnny K. can have a massive impact on a person or a company. Johnny and Associates' talents have massive following that if a variety show has them on their lineup, that show's rating is secure for that day. Merchandise will be soldout the next day if one of the talents were to be caught by news outlets using or wearing them. Magazines will be out of shelves just a few hours after its release just by having their talents on their covers. Movies and drama, no matter how bland the story will be a massive hit if they have Johnny and Associates' talent as a main lead. If one of their talents has a scandal, news outlets will turn their eyes away as they don't want Johnny's to pull out their talents from their other shows. And if one of their talents disobeyed the management, the will never find work as entertainers in Japan again.

It's true that the market for Japanese music is large, but that doesn't mean there's a lot of interest in music culture in general; most of those sales come from boy groups and female idols. Even though I live here, I think it's a very strange country.

People asking what is J-pop... it's like K-pop... but bigger. Now, why is K-pop more popular and talked about? Because Korea does not have a big enough economy to survive without exports and imports (of products and culture). Therefore Korea is much more Westernized. So their music is more palatable and advertised to oversea audiences as well. J-pop is much more unique. Personally, I'm not a big fan of either though haha.
