Japan: Solo Hiking the sacred Kumano Kodo Pt 3 - Chikatsuyu to Kumano Hongu Taisha to Yunomine Onsen

Join me as I embark on a pilgrimage on the sacred #KumanoKodo. The previous videos shows my hike from Takijiri to Takahara, and then from Takahars to Chikatsuyu - this particular leg was a bit difficult due to the length and the rainy weather! On Day 3 is about the highlight walk from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha, and then off to the night's accommodations in a nice ryokan in Yunomine Onsen. And of course -- IT IS STILL RAINING. But nothing can stop us from moving up and forward and having fun while doing it, eh?

This looks like a great challenge and a beautiful but wet adventure! Great video and production. Actually I love hiking while it's raining ;)

It was a challenge but it was still a beautiful trail. The rain was something I got used to, but I had to be extra careful on slippery paths! Also --- difficult to film: filmed on iPhone without any waterproofing. Lol

Hi, I really appreciate your video! I’m currently trying to decide if I want to join a group that planned this hike (the 6day version) right in the middle of rainy season. June 28-July 3. The idea of walking 6 days in constant rain doesn’t sound great. Would you do it again in the rain?

Hi! Sorry for the late response. I believe June in Japan can get pretty hot, so between a terribly hot day and a day with some drizzle, I prefer the latter. But do take note of rain intensity, there are always possibilities of mud slides, and walking in deep mud will not be pleasant at all. June is also usually the beginning of typhoon season in this part of the Pacific. Good thing that during my trip, it only rained for two days, and it was manageable. Let’s hope that you’ll have awesome weather during your trip!

from travel vlogger to travel vlogger: I am watching your kumano Kodo and Kyoto videos, they are all lovely! thanks for these inspiring and informative contents. I am also following some of your steps soon in Kumano Kodo, although not walking that many routes, but instead staying headquartered for 2 nights in Yunomine Onsen village (or whatever its´called lol) and from there taking buses to do 2 or 3 of the most iconic walk segments. May I ask what time of the year did you visit? was it in summer or earlier than that?

Hi! Thank you for dropping by! It was first week of April - explains those two days of April showers during the trip. It’s a lovely idea to stay in Yunomine Onsen and explore the highlight walks. I think there are a few in the Hongu area and of course the one going up to Nachi shouldn’t be missed. Wishing you great and safe travels!
