25 years ago, Japan controlled 50% of the global video game market. Today, it is under 10%. What is the cause of this decline? And what is Japan’s future in this $135 billion US dollar industry?
Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Japan was a dominant force in video games, with mega hits in the gaming arcades such as Pac Man, and then they dominated the console market with Nintendo and Sega who brought the world games such as Mario and Sonic. By 1995, Japan controlled 80% of the global console market.
However, close regional competiton started to emerge. And they soon began to have a massive impact on the way the world played video games. Communal game playing in Korea’s so called ‘PC Bangs’ in the late 90’s also gave birth to eSports, and in China, mobile gaming exploded over the last ten years.
But Japan is not taking things lying down. With new developments in the past few years like Nintendo Switch and gaming favourites like Animal Crossing, Japan looks set to make a comeback.

Japan is always compared to game developers in the West, but the West includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, and other European countries. I don't think it's fair to compare one country, Japan, with more than 20 countries in the West.

My impression is that Japan's share hasn't necessarily shrunk but the overall pool has grown so exponentially that Japan looks smaller by comparison. There is so much money being poured into the industry from all over the world that Japan with their current population can only contribute so much. One thing I can say hasn't changed is their ability to produce quality titles that largely put experience over profit which is why their games still constitute the majority of what I play.

@@garryjohnson6794 Yes but that's the thing: Japan always made games for Japanese! The fact they ended up being liked by ROW just came naturally thanks to their interesting culture. The main reason they decline is as above: Growth = lower % share. But more fundamentally: Software devs. Japan has not advanced it's IT workforce significantly - in part due to hierarchical structure which is not a great fit for software (should be more lateral and open). A lot of the success in 80-90s in Japan was some incredible design + engineering + business orientation eg Game Boy by Nintendo really got them through the 1st mini video-game bust in late 80s (over-supply). Personally think F2P mobile titles are equivalent to junk food for the brain. Not a good trend. The beauty of games was the separation of the digital space from real space and money making decisions. That's been breached now with MTX which suits China more and their mindset. It does not surprise that Chinese Gov wants to regulate how many hours Chinese play games... they know it's potentially a big problem. Games should not exploit people but elevate experiences digitally for brief periods of time using art and science.

This video is late by a decade. Japan's game industry has been on a rebound since 2016. Just because they don't have franchises that generate an ungodly amount of revenue, doesn't mean they don't have a large and important stake in the game industry. The time for massive growth is right due to the Western game industry continuing to implode upon itself. But it will never come to fruition because American consumers will still buy from Bilz/Act or EA if they shat in their mouth and robbed them.

Too late lol At this point, Chinese video game industries can have their leeway at being """heavily inspired""" from Japanese video games and somehow able to rack even bigger profits simply due to how they can adjust smoothness of presentation, much better English capabilities and localisation while able to make social games from mobile & gacha format, just look at Mihoyo, Hypergryph, to even Epic Games that got huge percentage shares from Tencent on top of others, even in mobile game fandoms, so many are baffled on how Japanese games are still getting way too slow for localisation compared to the recent booms of Chinese and Korean video game industry and they slowly began to climb back by having offices in California (only to abides by America's EGS nonsense by the biggest investors that fucked Western video game industry recently) No wonder that dev teams akin to Platinum Games are wrecked so hard recently and even Suda51 games wouldn't able to survive if there's not either professional services like Steam or Nintendo to back them up, in many ways Nintendo is the last true vestige of Japanese traditional video games but even they got enticed by gacha models that currently mastered by Chinese and Korean markets, If Japan can produce even bigger games and pop culture hits than Genshin Impact or even something as flexibly playable as Honkai Impact with localisations as good as them, I would be really surprised and applaud the current Japanese video game industry

From anime, J-pop and my favourite, games, all reflects hardwork, dedication and perfection without compromise that only japanese can do. Their games is classic that still relevant to this day and still can dissected because of many values they contains from their culture and past experience. From evil dr Wily in megaman that resemble Einstein because of how nuclear is a nightmare they have to endure. To their criticism for themselves with Rurounin kenshin that admit japanese past mistake but want to fix it by doing better. Japan is still king when it comes to the console market and for people who see games as art. Even if they don't dominate everything. Esports is "sports" . And social online games is also a different thing. Its like comparing movies with football and game shows, which is technically all TV entertainment but nobody is saying Hollywood is lagging behind since its not doing sports events etc and dominating everything people watch. I don't think the Japanese gaming market is in trouble since its not shrinking, the gaming world has just grown in other areas also with different types of interactive entertainment(games).

But... Console market in Japan shunk YoY in the past decade. 2017 was the turning point, cus of Switch. But if you look at the chart... Nintendo games dominates. PlayStation and those subculture looking games (contra, pacman etc weren't subculture looking tho, also, they were pixelated and have limited story telling techniques, character looks, the struggle, everything happened in your imagination. The culture barrier issue was not really there) is killing Japan. Meaning? Even non-Nintendo j-publishers don't know how to please Japanese customers. And so, for those bigger size non-Nintendo studios, Japanese console market is not a sustanable market. Like the vid said, it's a curse. You will die (or turn indie, turn mid size) eventually if you don't go out / find a foot stand in foreign countries. PS: Japanese kids today, play Minecraft, Fortnite and Animal Crossing. (playground games, travellers tales, Rare, codemasters etc, .... . And thats before we even talk about bethesda (heavily fantasy or scifi focussed) , obsidian etc. Actually only a small percentage of western games could be seen as "american action film" games. I would say games in the west are much more diverse than you think. The biggest difference to me ia story..... most Japanese games either completely lack story and narrative..... or have completely bizzare stories that make no sense.... Western gamers.... for the MOST part like a story that at least has something going for it. Nintendo are a good example...... very few nintendo games overall have a good story (or any for that matter). They focus on imediate fun and few complexities....if thats your thing then theyre very good at it You want to talk fantasy..... witcher 3, and the elder Scrolls series.... Well it depends, but if the Western AAA games make a comeback, they'll still have the upper hand over japaneese in making cinematic AAA games just because they simply have more funding. And Cinematic AAA games mass appeal is more about graphics, they don't exactly stand on their amazing, gameplay, so higher budget= better graphics = more sales. Japan's market value as of now is more for interesting gameplay mechanics, and narrative storylines, Cinematic AAA games are not exactly Japan's forte as of now so my guess is they'll focus on higher end AA titles. I think they should spend more effort localizing and marketing games outside of Japan, give a bit more polish to their storytelling and they could make a comeback.

The trend of gaming as I observe: During 80's and 90's, arcade games used to be the best because console games' graphics and technology had not caught up. Arcade games had the best graphics quality and you can play with others. Think Street Fighter II and X-Men vs Street Fighter, and how console versions (PS1, Saturn) could not hold a candle at all. During late 90's and early 2000's, console games overtook arcade games because console games had caught up to the technology and graphics quality of arcade games. Think PS2 and how everything was better than arcade versions of any same game. During mid 2000's to mid 2010's, more and more gamers shifted to PC gaming to play online games as it was cheaper and a more sociable experience. Think of all the gamers who started playing a PC online game like World of Warcraft and left their PS2 in the dust or did not buy any console at that time. Steam was released during this era and many gamers jumped on the bandwagon as playing games on PC was simply cheaper than consoles and there was no lack of AAA titles. From mid 2010's to now (early 2020's), more and more gamers shifted to mobile gaming as it was more accessible, cheaper, and convenient (playing outside, in office etc). Think of the global phenomenon of Pokémon Go and Genshin Impact. Ironically, due to Covid-19 and the longer hours staying at home, many people bought consoles / better PC and played less of mobile games. Just my two cents on the evolution of gaming.

Japanese game development isn't as dominant as before. That part IS true. Hardware, yes, Nintendo and PlayStation are two of the three game consoles. BUT when you factor in the overall video game development, revenue wise, the Japanese software makers aren't as big and influential as they were in the 80s and 90s. Japanese were even at the forefront of mobile gaming but there too, Chinese and European game makers have produced bigger hits. The 2000s WERE a dull decade for Japanese game publishers. A lot of them went through a period where they were trying to make Western-style over the shoulder shooters, and didn't succeed. Many publishers faced bankruptcies or merged with others. Even to this day, when it comes to AAA game development, Western game studios produce better games (even visually) than Japanese game studio do. Even when talking about Sony's first party game studios, the most successful IPs are all from Sony's American studios like Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica. Nintendo? Yes, their console is heavily reliant on Japanese-made games even now with the Switch. So they are still *very* much a Japanese gaming giant. PlayStation? Not so much.

I enjoy this documentary but there are some factual flaws. Gacha games, like Genshin, specifically how it is monetized is ... you guess from Japan! Genshin's breakthrough lies where it brings the presentation to a new level and across mobile/pc/console. That is what previous games failed to do, but it is indeed more of a technological revolution than game design one. Second, Japan's influence on gaming had never really gone by any means. The most influential franchise from the past decade that inspired many many many games, are BoW and Dark Souls. And gacha games just can't be discussed without mention its Japanese origin. So in a way, I don't think Japanese games need a comeback per say, it just needs to excel at being Japanese rather being something else. Anime had become an art style that is accepted by all humans at this point, a lot of Japanese stuff will be made in the future just not by Japanese themselves

JP has always been in the game. While all organisations (gaming or non-gaming) have problems due to customer and market forces, management structure, company norms and cultural customs, work ethnics - the passion for their chosen craft speaks a lot about excellence. Compare Activision-Blizzard (WoW) to Square-Enix (FFXIV) on the evolution of their products and one might find that it actually distills down to a West vs East(JP) mindest.

It's best for Japan to stick to more traditional games, the ones with a beginning middle and end. There is a market for that, and it's better than trying to compete in the live service market of always connected games.

Yep, the gameplay styles and their type of progression are just not monetizable. I do think they can make a few games that have that kind of monetization, like blue protocol is coming, but the fundamental design of these games is very different from your typical japaneese games, they will have to invest quite a bit to retrain a portion their game designers in the online gaming style gameplay. Moreover the live service market is becoming quite saturated and even genshin impact is bleeding players now.

What we mean here by market share is only a comparison of game sales in different countries. For example, let's imagine a world with only Japan, the US and the EU. Let's assume that the sales of games in each country are $100 million in the US, $100 million in Japan and $100 million in the EU. In this case, each country's share of game sales would be 33%. But that does not mean the share of the game industry in each country. It is simply a comparison of the game market in different countries.

One thing I don’t understand, what was the point of including South Korea, China, Free-2-Play games, PUBG and eSports in this documentary? Isn’t this documentary focused on Japanese game development? You could’ve easily interviewed creators such as Yoko Taro, Katsura Hashino, Tetsuya Nomura, Shinji Mikami etc. You could’ve also mentioned that franchises like Final Fantasy, Persona / Shin Megami Tensei, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter has recently started to boom in western markets.

My first ever console was the Famicom or Family Computer and growing up I remember trying to import Japanese games because Japanese developers and publishers refuses to release their games in global. The sad thing about this is that this is still very prevalent to this day Japanese either don't want to take some risk and try to release their games OR they wait 1-3 years before releasing their games and it'll be too late by then. This is one of the reasons why the Chinese and Koreans are kinda dominating Japan being Genshin is up there as one of the top games.

Personally, I think Japan's problem is a pure failure to understand the modern market of online gaming and just unwilling to put the money into online infrastructure. Nintendo Switch Online is a huge example of this and their lack of what would be expected of a paid online service. Another thing this is example of this too is how they think they can charge anything they want and just... not read the room with modern emulation and modders. Like, you can't charge that much for 25 year old games with little to no online infrastructure, no messaging, no actual supported services (very poor Peer to Peer instead). Especially when most of the market is young adults now.

Another issue with them is their restrictions on the consoles. Nintendo has 1 game that I know of that has made it to the PC. Some games that are on PS4 aren't on Xbox and vice versus. Soon loot boxes might be viewed as gambling addiction and ban all over the world and/or people got really tired from Multiplayer games which tries to suck their money weeks after weeks and left them for "Paid" single player games instead. The key is government policy, when they try to play around with rules, the gamers will shift to other platforms or methods to satisfy their crave for games.

I grew up with Japanese gaming from the 90's. Japanese games will always have a place in my heart. Especially, JRPGs, despite my recent issues with them. Japanese games are in an odd spot for me. A lot feel a bit dated and desperately hold onto tradition, often to a frustrating degree. At the same time, a lot of Japanese games are not chasing the "photorealism" that western gaming is obsessed with. I say this as a massive Sony first party games fan. They care less for realism and still implement charming art styles and unconventional gameplay, whether it works or not. I find that really refreshing. As someone who has played most of their gaming on Nintendo handhelds, it is sad that a lots of Japanese devs are moving to mobile. I would be okay with their mobile games weren't another F2P gacha game or fanservice galore. Another Eden is good but doesn't break out of the traditional JRPG mold. One of my favorite Japanese games 'Fantasy Life' had their new game released on mobile today and I'm about to give it a try. It is probably just another gacha F2P sink. With that said, I feel like this year was great for Japanese games. At the end of last year, I played my first Yakuza game (Like a Dragon) and was one of my all time favorite gaming experiences ever. Tales of Arise, Scarlett Nexus, Neo: TWEWY, Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2, Shin Megami Tensei V, Resident Evil Village, and No More Heroes 3. It looks like a lot more is in the horizon for 2022.

I respect the dedication Korean and Chinese gamers have to their local scenes, but companies outside those countries need to be wary of those styles of games. Chinese games are heavy on micro transactions, and Korean games are live-service games. Neither of these can bring the kind of cinematic experiences of Western games or the deep emotional impact of Japanese games. As the documentary said, Korean and Chinese markets were basically forced into those structures by their governments. Will these gamers still love their local games when their markets inevitably diversify? Because, as someone who plays both gacha and console games, I can tell you that micro-transaction-heavy games are NOT a good deal. Very few are designed to be fun experiences. Most of them are there to siphon cash out of your pocket. The global model of “pay a single price for a copy of an interactive art experience” is the most popular one (even if it is not the most profitable) for a reason

I've been playing Genshin Impact as a f2p player since its launch in 2020 and the best thing about the game is that 100% of the contents can be cleared without spending any money and they keep releasing DLC after DLC that not even the biggest western game development studios can't keep up with, in particular 343 Industry Halo Infinite which is basically dead in the water because of the lack of content. It's clear that they're using the resources to make the game even better. What separate mihoyo (Genshin's developers and publishers) from the rest is that the founders are running the company so they have no investors or shareholders to be pleasing with. They call all the shots and they're very passionate about the game and it shows. The game has high player retention even after 2 years.

Partly yes, but also. First Japan was making the type of games that were not a big hit any more and then they lost confidence their games and started to mimic western games. As pointed out here, they were still making each game from the ground up with out dated tech, as opposed to western devs who were licensing engines like Unreal and using up to date tech. The western market also changed, where as before they rarely made the biggest games for each system and had budgets comparable to Japan, they started to increase and then surpass them. Also the FPS before the 7th gen was a bit wonky on consoles, only a few big successes, where games like platformers and RPGs were better suited.
