Today we are sitting down to discuss some of the differences we've noticed between Korea and Japan 🇰🇷🇯🇵 These observations are based on our nearly two years in Korea, and a ten-day trip we took to Osaka and the surrounding region. We love Korea and Japan very much and consider ourselves honored to have been able to spend time in both of these great cultures!

The pollution in korea is caused by China. It really sucked when i visited korea because the sun was always blocked by the dust, really affected my mood. When i arrived back in LA i literally sat in the sun for an hour before i left the airport because of how bad i missed that bright warm feeling of the sun hitting your skin haha. -

And on top of the general large industrial pollution from China there's also the Hwang Sa (Yellow Dust) that comes from Mongolia across the sea to the peninsula of Korea.

The air in Korea is bad because of China. Bad materials in Chinese factories are all bad in the western regions of Korea due to the east wind. (West: Seoul, Incheon) China is said to be the main cause of air pollution in Korea. But why does North Korea have no air pollution? Some days, Seoul is also air-clear. If Korea was the main cause, would there be a clear day? Chinese people?

I live in Tokyo. And it seems you guys obviously never been to Tokyo. There is tons of cafe here every 100 meters. And I stayed several European countries. I found foods for locals in Japan so cheap. It costs around only $4-7 for that quality. Transportation systems in Tokyo is the best in the world. They are super complicated but super modern, efficient and clean.

You're right! We haven't been to Tokyo. Our time in Japan has been limited to the Osaka area. But, we're planning a trip back there later this year and we want to spend several months in the northern part of the country and Tokyo. Can't wait to experience the city for ourselves! :D

I've been to both countries an ld totally agree with your opinions. I think it is easier to live in Korea as a foreigner. I also have to honestly say I enjoyed Korea a little bit more because of the fact that they tend to speak better English and have a lot of English signs and Hangeul is pretty easy to read compared to all the Japanese writing systems. 😂 But still I also enjoyed Japan loads. 😀

You have to go to Tokyo to talk about this subject. You can’t compare Kyoto - Seoul.

We were comparing Osaka to Korea in general. Planning a trip to Tokyo later this year though and we can't wait to experience the city for ourselves! :D

@@WanderingRavens most of the japanese public transportation infrastructure is just a lot older then in south korea. a lot of the stuff is out of the 70thies. on the other end, even in kansai the haruka and the nankai rap:t look pretty much like in a sici-fi movie. if i remeber it correctly the haruka goes from the kix airport to kyoto station. the next think you have to compare is the high speed train network. the shinkansen is actually more modern then the ktx. if you go to japan as a tourist, i always would advise people to get a japan rail pass. those can save you a lot of money, depending on what you are planning to do. p.s. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ar9nYM-g3bu8goE.html

@@leonkasper97 you are incorrect. It’s been almost 50 years. But the reason why it’s so modern is Korea invests in it and evolves it - adapting new technologies and just let it evolve to the life style, ultimately optimization.

@@RT-xv3js not a hundreds years ago, then not so different. Before the war and 70-80’s technology is quite different, recent made one east to upgrade. Tunnel size quite different. Also Seoul metro was constructed under the Japanese financial and technical aid.

One reason why buses, taxis, and some metros look vintage out of 1950s in Japan is because a lot of infrastructure in Japan was already created by that time and even before that while Seoul and rest of Korea had to start building everything new.

Yes that is after the invasion of Japan in Korea and on August 15, 1945 is the independence day of Korea. But the very important fact is that Korean transportation keeps evolving. They get upgraded and better every time there is a new technology - adding TVs / GPS system at the bus stop / protecting screens in subways are all added within the last 20 years. So nothing to do with what you say where Seoul and rest of Korea had to start building everything new.

@Ken narville ah donc tu parles Français. Pour être honnête je fais de la provoque; bien que j'ai habité dans des appartes Japonais, je n'ais fait que visiter des appartes d'amis coréens. En vrai, je ne voit aucune différence dans la qualité, les appartes Japonais ou Coréen sont nuls a chier. Ce qui me fait péter un câble, c'est que les commentaires sont bourrés de coréens qui passive-aggressively disent des conneries sur le Japon. It’s natural that you felt Korean trains are more modern because Kyoto and Osaka are famous as Japanese Traditional Cities. They should look old. Even Japanese people think so like me. Comparing Seoul with Osaka with modern aspects is weird. Tokyo and Kyoto are totally different.

I think you're right. If Osaka is an old city, then you should compare it with Tokyo. But Osaka, which has a population of 2.7 million, and Gyeongju, which has a population of only 200,000, is not comparable in Korea. Maybe Daegu is similar. Since Osaka, which is the fourth largest city in Korea, is third after Yokohama, but that video shows that the population of Osaka or Incheon is more modern than Osaka.The population is 2.7 million in Inchon and 2.5 million in Daegu.

Quite contrary to what "Ken narville" described here, Kyoto (京都) and Tokyo (東京) are two of the most major tourist destinations for foreigners. The people in both cities tend to speak English much better than those in the other cities (although the Japanese are generally not good at English due to the geographical and historical isolations etc.) In general, the people in Kyoto and Tokyo know how to treat and welcome the expatriate guests.. There is NO place in Japan where the citizens tend to be hostile against the foreigners. Ken narville is only ignorant and arrogant.

Thank you for the good video! The air quality in Korea is affected by China. Since a large number of Chinese fossil fuel factories are collected in the West Sea, the fine dust index is high during the windy season in China. I have been able to see clear skies often since the factories in China stopped due to the Covid-19

First impression 1. Japanese are more quiet and Korean are noisy at restaurant. 2. Japanese cuisine are more delicate. 3. Japanese (ways of doing things) are comprehensive, but leak of flexibility at the same time. Finally, I guess most people agree that Japenese public toilets are the most cleaningness in the world😂 Now, I am exploring Korean culture > by watching Korean dramas. I could feel popular culture of Korean are duplicate from Japanese (industrial, drama and fashion). By the way > Japanese politeness in restaurants and service industries are part of their work. Even Japanese don't like the custom or really hate you, Japanese people rarly expressed in their face. This is what I was told from some Japenese book.

If you want to know why Japan has more houses just look at the landmass size between South Korea vs Japan. You will suddenly realize why South Koreans build up. Also, SK had to rebuild completely after the Japanese occupation and the Korean War. That's why many Korean buildings look cookie cutter because Korea had to rebuild so fast to house so many displaced ppl.

Wandering Ravens hmm.. I remember Kyoto didn’t have English announcements on the trains a lot of the time...? Other than that, I never had an issue with English - but yeah, Tokyo probably had more English comparatively. Didn’t get to go to Osaka!

Weird! We'll have to visit again. It must have been differences in train lines then, because I know we almost got lost a few times because there weren't English signs or station markers. Though, I can't remember if that was in Osaka or Kyoto.

You must visit Tokyo as well. Because most trains and subways in Tokyo look more modern, of course and every trains and stations have english, korean and chinese translation. Bus in Kyoto also have announcement in English. If you didn't notice.

I'm Korean and now in Japan just for trip. Contents in this video are exactly what I have felt! I'm kinda having difficulty in navigating now but I am amazed at how much sophisticated Japan is. Both countries have really similar vibe though! Thank you for this video!

They do not have much in common? How about the use of Chinese characters in writing, the prevalence of Buddhism as a religion, similar funeral rites, ancestral veneration, frequent use of cremation, rice as the primary staple food, use of honorifics in their languages, chopsticks as eating utensils... One can go on and on and on... There are plenty of similarities...

Coz most of Japanese infrastructure we're developed earlier in the last century whereas Korean developed at a later age

Nah Korea developed pretty early too, it’s just that the Qing didn’t allow Joseon to build major infrastructure when they took over the Ming, also countless invasions and Japanese colonialism in the later centuries takes a part too.

Korea isolated themselves after the Imjin War because they believed foreign intervention would ruin their country even more. After the opium war, Korea became even more hesitant to open up because they did not want to face the same fate Qing did. They only began to modernize in 1897 when the Korean Empire was proclaimed, which was somewhere around 30ish years after Japan. Korea was already too late because Japan already had ambitions in Korea. I would agree with Jamir.

Korea rebuilt their palaces and temples. So many of the original buildings were built earlier in Korea than Japan.

@@yogadgsix true, but the reason why Japan was able to do it earlier than Korea was because they had already been a developed country while as Korea had never been one. However, I think it is very impressive that Korea went from being the poorest country in the world to becoming the 9th largest economy.

Well looks like you've been to only Osaka. Then it's not Japan and Korea anymore. There are more modern transportation and buildings, coffee shops, english stuff in Tokyo. Don't just compare with korea if you only see Osaka.

Hi! Sorry for the delay, took me a while to locate it again! It's called Hyeondeung-sa. It's part of a temple complex hidden away in the mountains of Gyeonggi-do province. You have to hike to the temple, but I HIGHLY recommend it. A gorgeous little secret.

I think Korea is much more concerned about appearances. They are not yet a powerhouse, but they do everything to give off the appearance that Korea is a powerhouse. It is very smart actually, because it increases interactions with other countries and attracts investors. There is a reason why Korean media and technology has grown so rapidly in the last couple decades: because they are marketing geniuses and if the rest of the world finds Korea interesting, the Korean economy will boom. And that’s exactly what has happened!

I hate to say that such anti comments, but I think u guys visited Osaka or Kyoto, so you could see vintage stuffs there and cafeteria is depending on area. Honestly Tokyo has lots of fancy shop and amazing hospitality. Do not judge with a short stay period. You never understand the charm of Japan unless you visit Kanto region. And I love both countries. Japanese people are shy, very shy. This is because Japan is an island country, has no interaction with foreign countries, and has remained a shut-in. Korea is a peninsula, so it wasn't as big as Japan. That's why I'm so afraid of talking to foreigners. However, Japanese people are friendly, so if you open up to them, I think they will open up to you.

Good video! I'm a Korean passing through and I enjoyed watching this :D Quick observation about the comment section though. This is what happens when a Korea Japan video pops up on youtube lol All the ugly internet trolls pop up from both countries spouting nonsense. So don't pay much heed to these comment b/c they live in their own little biased world. On a side note I am somewhat curious about the age demographic though. I'm wondering if the ignorant comments from the Korean side is from the younger immature generations and if the ignorant comments from the Japanese side are from the older right wing supporting generations. Just a wild guess based on who is most likely to throw racial slurs to the other side. I might be totally wrong though.

And yeah, I tell people who come to visit that it's like being 20 years in the future but also 20 years in the past at the same time. Heck, in Tokyo you could walk for an hour and go from Edo-era buildings to 90s to futuristic. Osaka is a little more balanced toward 90's modern.

@@pinknicho Kyoto is great! I've only ever gone as a tourist, but I've been on every trip to Japan so 4 times in total. It's a beautiful, old city with culture just oozing out of every crack in the sidewalk ❤️ I love Japan, I worked for a Japanese tour company for 2 years so my job was to tell people how great it is and I always spoke the truth. People are very kind, the cities are meticulously clean, and it's very convenient for English speakers. If you're going to Kyoto Uni, I know they have plenty of classes in English so you should be fine. I think you'll enjoy yourself!

It's 1970 when the industrialization started in South Korea. It's called New Village Campaign. Korea's per capita GDP in 1960's was 150 dollars. Korea came a long way in about 50 years time. Japan's started their industrialization in Meiji period in 1868. So Japan had 100 year head start on South Korea. And even today Japan is still a bigger economy with 2x population and considered wealthier than Korea 27K USD per capita GDP vs Japan's 39K USD.

Me and my family have been to Japan six times (been to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hamamatsu, and Hokkaido) and honestly i have never felt that 1950s vibe . The trains i've been in were modern and stuff. My family and i would go to Hamamatsu to stay with my uncle and now ex-aunt. But i think i've been in those trains that have a vintage-y exterior but in the inside the trains look to the same to me. I visited Seoul once and i never noticed the difference 😂

Also the English level is pretty different. When we took a cab to our hotel in Namdaemun the driver's English was really good. In Japan there were drivers who couldn't speak English at all.

I agree with these. I think half or more of the cafes allow smoking unfortunately. Japan is always stereotyped as futuristic when Korea is much more futuristic than Japan lol. Although, you were showing clips of the hankyu train which is famous for being an old vintage train but even the normal trains look like they're super old

Actually I went korea too and the air was not that bad. Maybe it is because of seasons,I just went there for 1 month in summer. I didnt remember any day that the air was like that. I agree that that in seoul air was not good but in other cities like busan or jeju the air was good also sometimes in seoul the air was perfect. I dont think that you are lying. You also went there but maybe its just your chance that air wasnt good.

Thanks for watching our video! You're right, the pollution is seasonal, but in a given year, more days in Seoul are polluted than not polluted. For example, summer is often light on pollution, but fall and spring are generally pretty bad. We lived in Korea for two years and wore masks almost every time we went into Seoul.

The major cause of air pollution is from China. Before China’s industrializing, Korea uses the words ‘청명한 하늘’(meaning, cleared sky) alot.

I moved from Korea back to the us and I made a 3 day stop in and stayed at the Hyatt in roppongi (Tokyo) and the price was 43500 yen and coming from Korea I interpreted as oh...$43....biiiiiig mistake $400+ later I corrected and checked out the very next day

@@missplainjane3905 1) and 2) korea and Japan are both very highly developed, on pace with the US. Infrastructure wise, korea seem to be behind the US. Lots of places don’t have a US type sewer system instead Benjo ditches….I think Japan has those also. Scenery is beautiful for both, korea has a similar interstate system like ours. I would recommend the KTX (bullet train) if available. Japan the trains are available and a lot cheaper to get around. Lots of history and beautiful scenery too much to list

I’m a young black male, I got lots of stares that at first made me uncomfortable, but I quickly realized this was because they never seen a black person before. I remembered the kids taking pictures next to me. Asking for pictures. People stopped eating at a restaurant to point and come talk to me. 😂 weird but, never had a bad experience. Japan has some areas where they don’t cater to foreigners (Kabuki cho) but those places are few and far between.

Most of trains are simply old but very expensive. Bus is not equipped with GPS and you never know when it comes in Japan.

I don't understand why you had issues with things not being it by English in Japan. I traveled almost the whole country in 2015 speaking and reading zero Japanese and there's nothing Google translate couldn't figure out for me, especially transportation related. The translations have come a looong way since then, so it's even easier

Depends on your budget and what kind of experiences you're looking for! Both are incredible countries:) Korea has more English and a better public transportation system. Japan (since it's a bigger country) has a lot more historical sites and different kinds of nature to explore.

Fun video! Thank you for sharing! I think you see less English and old transportation in Japan because you went to Osaka/Kyoto instead of Tokyo. Tokyo is similar to Seoul: modern train with more English communication

@@underated17 Yeah, but it's different when it comes to integrating Western culture into its own culture. I think Japan is quite a bit more protective of their own culture. Even Korean pop music is more influenced by Western (particularly US) pop music, whereas Japanese pop music is closer to European Classical styles. Also remember that Korea is just recently (in a historical context; i.e. < 100 years ago) starting to open up to Western influences, after WWII (1945). On the other hand, Japan opened up to Western influence starting with the Meiji Restoration (1868) and even earlier with the "arrival of the black ships" (the Perry Expedition, 1853). So Japan, as a nation, is already past the stage where everything about Western culture seems new and awesome. Right now, Japan's at the stage where it's trying to re-affirm its identity after a period of great change.

This was great and very informative. I was only in Japan for a 23 hr layover, but I had a blast. I didn't ride the subway, but the hotel I stayed at was amazing. They actually had a free tour bus, but I didn't realize it until later. They had some cool things in the hotel so that was nice. Only thing was that there was no free wifi! Super sad. Paid I think $10 for a day or maybe several hours. I freaked out on a bus because I forgot they drove on the opposite side.

Hmm interesting. Theres a lot of cute cafes all over Tokyo. I never had a hard time finding one and they're super super instagramable cute. If you have to pay minimally 15 dollars for a Japanese meal you're doing something wrong lol. Most bowls of ramen for example are between 450yen-1000yen. Beef bowls are as cheap as 380yen etc. There are trains like the Korean ones in Tokyo. Alot of them. Maybe you weren't in the city centre?

There’s also the fact I’m a niche lifestyler (don’t value a lot of things people care about like having access to nature, view of the mountains, wide open space, picky about air quality etc ) , lived in Japan for a decade vs only visited korea. Have a general interest in Japanese fashion music food etc but not so much for Korea

@@missplainjane3905 yes. But it is definitely a different way of living than in the west. Work culture is still quite draconian. Family law still a bit archaic. But convenient? Yes they have that in spades. North America for example is very difficult without a car, and simple services like shoe repair take a super long time, things close early, schedules are not usually on time. Like your bus will be early or late and traffic lights are unpredictable

I'm Korean and I love Japan and Japanese people in general. We have this long festering hatred towards each other and I think the main reason why this still exists is the domestic politics for both of us, rather than our actual history. (I'm not denying the fact that Japanese did colonized us and many Japanese people did some horrible things to us back then. I just think that our politics have overly emphasized them trying to promote a nationalism. As far as I know, badmouthing neighboring countries for political purpose is very common in almost every country, no matter how they actually are..) Most recently, we had this radar incident and we blamed each other for that. People discussed about the truth behind that but I only saw the numbers going up for both of the governments. I don't like how this incident benefitted those greedy politicians. I, as an average person, don't want to be played around by them too much. I just like the people. Japanese people are polite, orderly, respectful and responsible. I love their traditional work ethic, their foods, their everything except for their politicians and animes. I hope to visit there some day!

not each other . Japanese don't care anything about Korea . why Japanese hate Korea is all coz of Korea hate Japan . If Korea wanna be friend , Korea have to stop hating Japan .

You wanna say that people in Japan live just in houses but not in apartments? You better go and watch the living area in Japan. The concrete buildings like in Korea.
