For people who didn't visit Tokyo...might be hard to understand...but... when I visited Tokyo few years ago and was less flexible because of traveling with a baby and bit tired of the hotelfood... the 7 11...was really blowing my mind....the Japanese people are totally quality driven.... great out of the box episode Sam, keep going, keep exploring.

Back in a previous job I would have to travel to China for weeks at a time. I only agreed to it when my boss agreed that I could spend a weekend on my return trip in Tokyo. One of the first trips I mentioned this to my coworker from Hong Kong, and he jumped at the chance to go to Japan as he usually went through HK. It was easy to justify as I had business in Tokyo and could have a Friday meeting. Honestly I always made it very affordable. The fun memory is eating the chicken guts pieces (gizzards, livers, hearts, etc) at the Izukaya that he had ordered but suddenly balked at. Great times and looking forward to another post-COVID trip back

Between this video and the one about the fast food restaurants, my desire to go back is only further fueled. I was absolutely blown away by the 7-11s, all the food we had at various restaurants, and the vending machines...oh man! Actual HOT coffee (different varieties, with and without cream/sugar and all as lovely as Sam says) came out of the same vending machines as cold drinks. And the variety of beverages in each machine, just so wonderful! Plus, the vending machines with the different beers and liquor in them...come on! I actually made an unnatural sound remembering the yakitori chicken and the Asahi.

Sam you gotta try "Oden" that is cooked at the counter with varieties of commodities (veggies and all the what not) in a soup. You find more surprises and also they are very seasonal for traditional food! The little fragrant leaf with chicken breast is a plum leaf! (Hi-So)!

I remember my BF visited me in Japan and we spent NYE in Roppongi, and the next morning, we had to get on an early bus to my friend’s ski cabin in Nagano prefecture. We needed to get on the bus, and we needed to eat something before the bus ride. I casually said, “There’s a convenience store right next door to the hotel. We can get something.” My American BF looked at me like I was insane, and then I realized he didn’t understand food at Japanese convenience stores, or “conbini”

We were there May 2019 for 10 days. Can't wait to go back. The triangle sandwich on the top shelf is meat, usually salmon, wrapped in sticky rice and is really good for about $2.00. The hotel you went back to has to 100% be the Conrad Tokyo Bay and that is where my wife, son, and I stayed. Fantastic hotel! We had a two bedroom suite facing the bay and, being aviation geeks, my son and I would sit up at night in his room with the lights off and watch the air traffic coming in over the ocean. Just a really good trip, the town is spotless, you could eat off the subway floor, and we never felt unsafe at night anywhere.

Im surprised you didn't buy the full microwavable meals that are in the fridge section. They have full plates of spaghetti and stuff that look horrible when cold but taste really good when microwaved.

I lived off that karaagi chicken for breakfast every day on my way to work when I was over in Japan. Those 7-Eleven's are life savers

@@MrAcuta73 that is funny. I thought it was the name of operation or something. They just mentioned pearl harbor in trailer so I thought so. I am from eastern europe so sorry bout that, never really read anything about american war history except ww2

@@MaltevdH like I said, it's kinda local history and it's normal not to expect from a foreigner to know this from top of his head just like we do not expect you knowing about our role in ww2.

While the ramen noodles were heating you should have layed the wet ingredients on the lid to heat through also you should have tried the broth. Just sayin'. That being said I have tried that ramen and it's delicious. 👍🏻

Fairly sure the word 'corndog' isn't really a thing outside of the US so the clerk probably thought if you were asking if it was corn or dog.

@14:40 those potato croquettes I think are called Potato Kotokke. They sometimes have ground beef and cheese and onion all ground up with the potato. Delish.
