Van Dame movies practically invented the repeat-the-move-three-times-and-then-one-more-in-slow-motion! The other Blood Sport movies were low budget direct-to-home-video releases and did not involve JCVD but might be worth a reaction to see how it holds up. Kick Boxer 1 would probably be the better follow up in terms of JCVD movies. ^_^

In the 0:30-0:45 area of the clip where you were trying to figure out the kata, there is not one. It's a flourish of movements that were created by him to showcase two things: Splits and Ninjutsu hand knitting postures (kuji kiri or kuji in). Frank Dux claims Ninjutsu as his background and thus they wanted to have a few spots in the film that showed that.

I always wondered what the word they used for tapping out was when I first saw the movie and had no idea about anything Japanese. I want to say that it was supposed to be something like "MATTE" [待って], like in "chotto matte" or "wait a minute". So that you stop the fight and it's over and you're essentially tapping out.

I guess there is one lag big martial arts movie franchise from the 80s left: Best of the Best. They had probably the best cast in terms of martial arts proficiency of all the 80s martial arts movies. And I think Yusuke could have an interesting conversation with Phillip Rhee (who plays Tommy Lee in the Best of the Best movies). By the way, she doesn't say 'yamete' the just pronounces 'matte' in a very Americanized form.

@@jovanleonardi1574 Taekwondo kicks and kungfu kicks are different. Also, I don't think literal copying the style from the game would be a good idea for the movie. The movement is quite terrible in those games. Pretty sure none of the characters throw punches without completely opening their defense. And I guess Rhee could learn kung-fu, but why not take a new guy? Also, was Rhee even up for the role? Not even talking about casting him into another IP in which he has to avenge his killed brother. Would be kinda like double type casting. The fact that they went for someone who was also a new guy in Hollywood instead of some known fight movie guy, was commendable.

Because he didn't wanna do a true story when his role wasn't being truthful. Jean Claude Van Damme trained his son and daughter. They are now black belts...🥋

1:08 I think he was trying to bait Frank into a game of "knuckles", you know, the reflex game when you hold your hands like that against another person's hands and you take turns seeing who can hit the other person's knuckles on top of their hand before they're able to move their hands.

Van Damme made the ”helicopter” kick famous back then. Not many actors are/were making it equally good looking. Scott Adkins is one of them and I see him as modern days ”Van Damme” :)

in the eighties there was a movie call American Ninja, it has all the same hand moves you don't recognize. Effectively they are for meditation or "ninja magic"

I was once told the hand stuff being done is more meditative. A way of focusing the mind prior to a fight in order to release stress and anxiety and to go into the fight with an open and clear mind. Not sure how true that is...didnt stick with it.

There are a lot of movies in the Bloodsport series and Jean-Claude Van Damme starred in the remake as well. Delta Force and The Octagon starred Chuck Norris which showcased tang soo do (the choreographer of Karate Kid is Pat E. Johnson, who's the referee and for many years trained with Chuck Norris), Billy Jack's martial arts is hapkido (please watch Bruce Lee's Game Of Death and it's showcased there as well), Best Of The Best also spawned sequels (starring Philip Rhee and showcasing taekwondo). I do hope you get to interview someday Pat E. Johnson and Cynthia Rothrock (who also practices tang soo do, taekwondo, karate and kung fu) and starred in The Martial Arts Kid (which like Never Back Down is also modeled after Karate Kid). Keep up with the great content and looking forward to the next episode!

Van Damme wasn't in the other Bloodsport movies, but part 2 is still worth check out despite that fact.

The Bloodsport sequels don't have anyone from the original, you should check out Kickboxer instead. Also while it's not a great movie, No Retreat, No Surrender, could be a good watch. It was Jean Claude Van Damme's first major role and one of the few times he played a villian.

Van Damme was only in Bloodsport 1. The main actor in Bloodsport 2-4 is Daniel Bernhardt from Switzerland.
