The Ground and Pound rule is you are allowed 5 seconds of ground and pound from a standing or knee on belly position. If you are on the ground and you reverse the position then the 5 second timer is reset. If your back is against the pit wall you are treated as if you are standing. Newaza is treated like a clinch in boxing, where some referees will give you a chance to work out of it into a position where you can strike, while others will break it immediately and stand the fighters up.

it's interesting to get a Shotokan perspective on a non-traditional match between two Shotokan practitioners. I noticed that these guys are much more hesitant to engage, perhaps because the background is more in point fighting than full contact. It's interesting to see the maai though.

For such high level karateka, what does it say that almost no straight zuki were thrown (elbows inside body line, no wind-up)? Every punch looked round and looping, quite different than what one sees in their Olympic style fights. I didn't see a single straight line gyaku zuki, for example. One mite (at the end of the fight). All hooks and overhands. Why the difference?

To incorrectly quote icy mike "if you didn't learn how to fight and then learn a non combative (sport karate) martial art, THEN get into a fight, you'll revert back to what you would've done before you've learned your martial art." In the way that MMA has become it's own martial art, karate combat will become a new "martial art" in that people will predominantly train and use techniques wich will enable them to win a bout under karate combat rules
@michael.schuler
@michael.schuler 2 жыл бұрын
@@momcawesome5610 Your comments, particularly the quote, ring true. But I don't understand the implication of the "new martial art" comment. I wouldn't think that anything in the new system's rules would make straight line punches either disallowed or ineffective. I was surprised to see so little non-telegraphed linear striking from opponents with such deep karate backgrounds. Do you believe that the rules and/or format somehow favor the type of punching exhibited in this match? Or do you think that the initial change from the familiar format simply caused the abandonment of their traditional training you cite?
@momcawesome5610
@momcawesome5610 2 жыл бұрын
@@michael.schuler my thought was more related to them probably training some muay thai and boxing in preperation for the fight which introduced techniques like hooks thus changing their unique style to something less karate looking. That's really all I meant by saying thay. The rules dictate the techniques fighters use in a fight and that thats apparently what works in this environment leading to most fighter using the same techniques looking less "traditional karate" -ish. And to circle back to my first point about "not knowing how to fight", obviously they do know how to. At least more than you and I, but compared to glory or ufc striking it looks a but amateur imo

Very good question. Just my take, Having done WKF rules karate for 10yrs and then moving into contact Martial arts. Gloves play a part. With bare hands you can not throw full power punches as you’ll risk breaking your hands. But also bare knuckles do more damage to more delicate targets. So traditional karate favours faster / less telegraphed strikes. With the KC gloves on fighter have to hit harder to stop the opponent. Overhand punches are also good because you throw them as you move your head off the line.

I’m just wondering what martial arts would look like if there wasn’t time to test the opponent. If it was a real fight, or war on the battlefield. 4 against 4 in the ring should look very different and whatever. The question just came to my mind, in such a scenario, opponents who are currently busy with someone else would have to be attacked. Difficult. . .

What kind of martial arts are you wondering about? The stuff on the battlefield today is martial arts. Guns, tanks, jets..:
@svenboelling5251
@svenboelling5251 2 жыл бұрын
@@giqwaju3691 I explained that, didn’t I? 2 groups of karate fighters in the ring would require a different approach, 4 against 4 for example. That would be closer to the original purpose and therefore interesting. After all, everything was also intended for the war and there you have rather seldom a fight one against one.

There was a russian organisation that did that, Team Fighting Championship. It was 5v5 MMA. You can watch it on youtube. To be honest it wasn't a very engaging spectator sport, every fight went the same way, everyone would break into 1v1 fights, because if you didn't the guy who got ignored would just knock out one of the guys ignoring him, once one guy went down the fight was over because no one could beat the numbers advantage the other team had from that point on. It also was very difficult to follow 5 MMA fights happening at once. I understand your logic that from a self defense perspective there are certain things that work in competition that you don't want to do, such as going to the ground, due to the concern of attacks from other people, but you can't simulate that by having a team competition unfortunately. The only thing I can think of that does is the 2 v 1 fights that Pride and Freakshow put on, there you can see a reluctance to go to the ground, but those fights rely on one fighter being much more skilled or in a different weight class etc. you can't make a genuinely competitive league of it.
@svenboelling5251
@svenboelling5251 2 жыл бұрын
@@NoNoNah306 I didn’t want to make sports out of it either. It just occurred to me that I saw in the karate videos that there are techniques that, according to my guess, have their origin in the fact that there are several opponents involved. Especially the one where your hands are guided as if you were holding a sword. I think it’s also about attacking another enemy, or distracting it briefly, so that the allies have a better chance. As you said, as soon as there is an imbalance, it is over and therefore it is probably also about achieving that. However, the question arises again and again where a special technique originates. I’m interested in that. ...that`s all.

I've always had great respect for Rafael in WKF, but he looked a bit amateur here in KC. Less bounce than usual, no kicks, only half a dozen jabs the whole fight, and constant big swinging overhands instead of mixing them with gyaku zukis. Granted he hasn't competed in this rule set in 4 years, and got eye poked and is 36 but he should be sharper I feel since he won the Olympic silver just last year.

We have to remark what Karate really is, and the most important is that real karate must have TODOME WAZA, or IKKEN HISATSU, Budo spirit in it, I did not see any really karate technique there, please take a review about old karate kumite like Sensei Masahiko Tanaka, Asai, Brenan, and many others....for sure they would finish that "kumite" in seconds, that´s it .... Please focus in Traditional Karate, because this kind of events are not karate...

Disagree completely. As time goes on, it's obvious that martial arts and sports' science evolve into something more innovative whilst being true to their original principles. Most of the older competitors and pioneers of Karate simply couldn't have kept up with these athletes. They would've been slower, less conditioned, less skillful and their strategies would be considered "out dated". But this is also why it was probably more appealing to the viewers. As a matter of fact, kumite looked more like a brawl more often than not, while modern kumite looks more like a game of chess, waiting for that "Ikken Hissatsu" moment. Karate combat will take kumite to the next level, I believe. Maybe not as soon as people would expect, but eventually karateka with solid base in semi contact would be facilitated to transition into full contact. All that without having the necessity to start a completely different discipline in mma, muay thai or boxing. Back in the day, karateka didn't have quite the opportunity of doing so.

Besides, "what karate really is" is such a contradictory quote. There's so many styles, sports and other disciplines that derive from the Japanese fighting art, that you really can't water down to one specific kind of karate and call it "real karate".
