In this lesson, you’ll learn some very useful phrases to start a conversation in Japanese! Topics like ‘What brings you here?’ & ‘I came here for -.’ are often talked about during a small talk. Through the story of an alien called Midori visiting Japan and meeting his new friend, you’ll also learn essential phrases that are used in daily Japanese conversations!
There are two main parts in this video: 1) Japanese Listening Practice with a story (without subtitles)
2) Listening the story with subtitles and explanations!

I love these story formats without the subtitles and then followed with the explanation. This really really helps us learn the actual Japanese instead of relying on English translation. I really appreciate that you don’t use romaji in these videos. It helps me to understand the hiragana and kanji better. You’re amazing for doing this. These are really interesting and I hope you have time to create more.

do you often find that when you slip up and miss a few days, when you go back into studying the Japanese, you feel strong and can understand and differentiate words betteR? I have found that I do. When I go back to it, everything comes back to me like VERY clearly. I think that taking a few days break is a GREAT thing! But maybe its different for other people.

I am sooo happy that I came across these videos! I have been teaching myself the language with the Japanese From Zero book and it's very nice being able to hear & recognize some of the vocabulary. I think this is a very good way to get your ear used to hearing it in real-time. The subtitles are helpful as well because it helps me recognize the Hiragana I have learned so far. Thank you so much for these!!!

いただきます (itadakimasu) can mean both 'Thank you for the meal/ drink' & 'I receive/ accept'. In the situation like this in the video, someone gives you a surprise gift, it could be more natural to say 'すみません (sumimasen)=I'm sorry to make you this for me, but thank you ' or simply 'ありがとうございます (arigatoogozaimasu)=thank you'. 😊
