Japanese Mafia - Who are the Yakuza? The cancer of a nation or a necessary evil in a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the industrialised world?
Japanese Mafia (2013)
Director: Sebastian Stein
Writers: Sebastian Stein
Stars: Daikaku Chôdôin, Shorai Horitoku, Jaime Morris
Genre: Documentary
Country: Japan, Germany
Language: English
Also Known As: Twilight of the Yakuza
Release Date: 2013 (Internet)
Filming Location: Tokyo, Japan(location)
Synopsis:
The Yakuza, Japan’s organised crime syndicates, are a dying breed. Their members are aging and the government of Japan has launched a large-scale crackdown on them to eradicate them once and for all. But who are the Yakuza? The cancer of a nation or a necessary evil in a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the industrialised world?
Undoubtedly the Yakuza are involved in crimes including extortion, fraud, murder, drugs & gambling. However, Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the industrialised world, with crimes related to drugs officially against the Yakuza code of honour or street gangs strikingly low, a fact that many contribute to the presence of the Yakuza. Deeply rooted in Japanese society, they are seen as a necessary evil and ‘problem solvers’. They have been around since the 1700s and were said to protect the weak from the strong, following a rigorous code of honour. Several clans even contributed aid for the victims of the recent earthquake and Tsunami, all reasons why the public perception of the Yakuza in Japan is not solely a negative one.
Unlike the Mafia, the Yakuza is a legal, public group making them relatively easy to check on. Their offices are public, their members registered by the police and Yakuza members went as far as freely admitting their guilt in cases of crime investigations, as a part of their code of honour. In reaction to strict government measures against them, the Yakuza has ceased all cooperation with the law. As the police concentrate their resources on the Yakuza, many criminals simply don’t register with clans anymore and start operating underground, evading the grasp of police. A clear trend is emerging towards a new structure of organised crime in Japan, resulting in a steep decrease in the numbers of the traditional Yakuza while the underground is soaring - including foreign Russian and Chinese mafia’s.
This documentary deals with the struggle of the Yakuza for its survival and the restructuring of the organized crime scene in Japan. Furthermore, unprecedented access to the secret world of the Yakuza gives you an insight on who the Yakuza really are: criminals, outcasts, but also family men and a part of Japanese society.
Reviews:
"Boxed in under increased police pressure and with a shortage of new members, the Yakuza have no place left in modern Japan and are going extinct. Interviewed in this film are current Yakuza members, a tattoo artist, a journalist, a policeman and a recently excommunicated gang member.
Founded on principles of showing strength to the strong and compassion to the weak, they had a code of honour not found in modern gangs.
I found the ex-member (Nakamura) sections to be quite sombre as gang life was all he had known for 37 years and now he is struggling to adjust to the normal world. Yes seeing a weird old man acting like he's still tough can be strange to watch, but he gives a lot of insight into his former life. His story is a sad one as he despairs over friends abandoning him and some failed business ventures, becoming visibly drunker and more emotional as the film progresses. To then hear that he perished soon after the film whilst in hiding from debt collectors is perhaps symbolic of the Yakuza as a whole slowly floundering and dying out in modern times."

I was once in Kichijoji park during Hanami, and met some Yakuza doing exactly what they are doing in the park there. They gave me food, and drink and I stayed with them most of the night. I was scared sh*tless but they were okay with me on the night. Wouldn't like to socialise with them as a regular thing though.

So funny to see Oyabun Tanaka stating "I hate drugs...blablabla..", the Mastuba Kai was probably the most deeply involved Yakuza organization in the Kanto region, in the import and distribution of Kakuseizai. Some high ranking members from Korean descent, had direct business connection and contacts with the North Korean office Office 39. The North Korean fushin-sen cases, are representative of these connections.

Those were some of the worst push ups ive ever seen in my life, but I still love that man edit: the japanese police watched the episode of It's Always Sunny where Mac and Charlie come up with their movie "The 6th Sense: Crime Stinks" and adapted it into their society. The Japanese government and police heard "what if he can smell crime!? What if he can smell crime before it even happens!" and took it literally. They're still debating on whether or not to run around like a hound.

I have to say i'm nearly finished watching this documentary on the secretive life of the Yakuza. And i have to say it was VERY VERY well produced. What i learned from this is Yakuza is about a code of HONOR and upholding that at every level. Respecting those ahead of you and if you make mistakes knowing when to admit and make up for them. I don't agree with the violence aspects the killing and chopping off of one's fingers. But everything else about them i can totally respect as it's like a brotherhood/family. If they did away with these practices of killing and mutilating yourself. They probably wouldn't have got as bad a reputation as they've built up over the years.

You will have no particular problems with tattoos nowadays, even with neo Japanese tats. There is actually a trend right now amongst young Japanese men, with neo Japanese tattoos. A real Yakuza is not going to bother you, with a tattoo issue. These guys have better things to do. Remember one thing, in Japan, there are 3 types of tattoos. 1) Irezumi (tattoos wore by members or associates of organized crime syndicates). 2) Iremono ( tattoos wore by individuals who love Japanese traditional culture). 3) What is being called "point tattoos". A point tattoo is a tattoo which is made by electronic tattoo machine, as opposed to "tebori", the traditional Japanese method of hand tattooing using a slender bamboo or metal tool, with a needle grouping attached to the tip. However, some places may deny you access to specific facilities such as swimming pool, sauna etc..., or they may require you to hide your tats. As a foreigner, Japanese will be more tolerant of your tattoos than with Japanese.

@@Gameboypxht What are you talking about?. Japanese cops won't follow or act upon a gaijin who wear tattoos. Most Japanese understand that tattoos have a totally different context in the West, so do the Japanese cops. I have been living in Japan for more than 34 years, and never heard of a gaijin who was harassed by Japanese cops for wearing tattoos As for "affiliates or associates" who may potentially press a gaijin for wearing tattoos, this is fantasy. I have a full back Tebori iremono (Japanese traditional hand tattoo), and the only times Yakuzas bothered to ask about my tattoos, was on a purely friendly curiosity basis. They only asked me who was my tattoo master, how much did it cost, and how long did it take?. Japanese tattoo are not meant to be displayed, especially Tebori, except for special occasions anyway...

I'm no expert, but I feel like the Yakuza basically went the same way as the American Italian mob. Both have dwindled to what seems like all-time historic lows. Fraction of the power, fraction of the membership. And significantly tougher/harsher laws to maneuver around.

At the beginning of the video, he mentioned that he had rented a spacious office for free, but of course it would not be free all the time, and it was hard to believe that an elderly man who had never had any proper business experience with the yakuza could do business in the future. At the end of the video, as expected, his business soon came to an end. The people who were initially close to him would have left. Generally speaking, when he was drinking and drinking in his office, he wasn't going to take it seriously.
