Japanese Metal Week 4 continues as we delve into the Wagakki Band. We were very impressed with them as the band for Baby Metal and wanted to hear what they could do when not holding up pop music.

Welcome to the world of Wagakki Band. Not just a professional band, but also performance art at its best. Firstly, Wagakki band is not Babymetal's band without the girls. That's what "Kamiband" is. And Asa on bass is not a girl. Hibiya Yagai Ongakudo = Hibiya open scene You have over 100+ songs to play around with. No two songs are the same, all are good. Metal, rock, jazz, Pop and ballads. They also have a number of cover songs from Vocaloid recordings, including their biggest hit Senbonzakura which is a cover of Hatsune Miku. (Hatsune MIku is not a real person). Homura (flame) is an instrumental Machiya brought with him from previous solo projects (he uses the Noh mask on those songs). Akatsuki no ito (thread of down) is also written by Machiya and is a very important song for WGB as the audience uses it as an encore chant. Apart from the shigin part at the beginning, the song has only one verse that can be repeated endlessly. Shigin singer, poet, pianist and sword dancer Yuko Suzuhana is the driving force behind WGB. The band was founded by Yuko Suzuhana in 2012. They have released 6 albums, 2 EPs and a number of singles and live albums. Wagakki means Japanese musical instrument Machiya plays a Sago guitar, it's a 33 "scale baritone with 29 frets tuned BEADF # B, if you capo at the 5th fret it becomes a 25.5" scale guitar in standard E tuning WGB is an 8 piece band Yuko Suzuhana - Shigin, vocals Machiya - guitar, vocals (arrangement) Beni Ninagawa - tsugaru "shamisen" (three strings) Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto (25 strings) Asa - bass (Vocaloid producer) Daisuke Kaminaga - shakuhachi (Bamboo flute) Wasabi - drums Kurona - wadaiko (Traditional drums) You just have to hear "Kyoukasuigetsu+Tsukini sakebuyoru" from React tour 2019 or "Hakushukassai" from Daishinnenkai 2018

One of the most talented bands out there, great performers as well as musicians. Their music is quite hard to categorize as they use so many different styles, but always great to watch and listen to.

I don't know who or what gave you the idea of connecting them to BabyMetal but nope, the Wagakki Band are 100% seperate from them. Have nothing to do with each other. Also I'm not sure where you got an Egyptian vibe from because apart form the modern rock influences, this music is pretty much as Japanese as humanly possible. The traditional drums played by one of the drummers are called Taiko. The kind of banjo-like instrument played by the lady is a Shamisen. The Thing that kind of looks like a harp laid down flat is a Koto and the traditional bamboo flute is a Shakuhachi. All of these people are extremely skilled in their art, several of them (if not all of them, I'm not 100% sure) having degrees in it.

Yeah, the only Babymetal/Wagakki Band crossover I'm aware of is Leda from the Kami Band playing in studio with Yuko when she was performing her solo album.

The hardest band to get a concert ticket in Japan! They are amazingly very good at metal, punk, swing, traditional Japanese and Western-Japanese mixture pops. Bass Asa is he/his! Each member has a master level technique. And the vocal Yuko's real specialty is western classic piano, and she has mastered Japanese poem and folklore singing techniques and sword dancing by herself. She sometimes performs mesmerizing jazzy keyboard in concert. Ah, the joint performance of "Bring me to life" with Amy Lee and Yuko is an awe for many global reactors. The guitarist Machiya is mostly driving the song arrangements. Actually, 'Homura' is originally Machiya's jazz piece, but for this concert they re-arranged it into a metal. There are so many recommendable songs. That is my only problem around Wagakki Band, LOL.

I call it Folk metal. You find it all over the world. Wagakki is one of the prime in that category. The Indian band Bloodywood falls under the same term, just a little more western sounding. "Aaj" is a must hear!

I don't think WagakkiBand and BABYMETAL have anything in common, whoever did that comparison is a very bad comparison. WB does folk hard rock. BABYMETAL touches really varied tones of Metal, the only song that might be similar would be Megitsune. And Su-metal is now 25, so no little girl anymore, awesome singer. As awesome as WagakkiBand's, Yuuko Suzuhana is also one of the best female vocalist in Japan. 4:02 It is called a Shamisen, three stringed japanese traditional instrument. Usually made of cat skin. You'll usually see other traditional japanese instruments appear in WagakkiBand music too; later in the song you see a Shakuhachi (similar to a flute) and a Koto (similar to a harp). BABYMETAL has just released a new song this week and announced a new album after three years silent. Divine Attack, is called, if someone wants to check.

very sorry... It's a minor detail, but I'll add it. It seems that the popular theory is that cat skin is used for shamisen. However, most shamisen are made of dog skin. Players who prefer delicate tones want to use thinner leather, so they use cat skin shamisen. However, thin skins are delicate to handle. Recently, it seems that the use of synthetic leather seats that are easy to maintain is increasing.

At the beginning of this you sounded a bit like me around eight years ago. Like so many people, my initial reaction to BabyMetal was WTF?, but I was observant enough to notice the massive size and enthusiasm of their audiences. Still, I was very uncomfortable with liking these young girls and it took me awhile to get past it. For me, I had to open my mind, open my heart, get over myself, and stop being too cool for school. It is not about being into little girls. I am 69 years old and no longer worry about other people's perceptions. I like BabyMetal because their music is good, and it makes this old man feel better about this messed up world we live in. They are a reminder that there are still some things that are simply good and decent. That being said, you will not have that issue with Wagakki Band. There are no little girls here but two women, the lovely shamisen player Beni, and the very elegant lead singer Yuko. All eight band members are master musicians and Yuko is the finest of all the many female Japanese vocalists I have listened to over the years.

Wagakki are the most talented musicians and not 'metal'. They combine traditional Japanese instruments ( Wagakki) with guitar, bass and wester drums in a wonderful fusion. Homura is a great intro but most of their music is more complex. The bassist is not a girl but has catholic taste in clothing. His name is Asa. The wonderful Beni plays the traditional 3 string shamasen and 'shreds' it!! The second part after Homura is more their usual style. The singer formed the band and is a classical pianist and Japanese champion in traditional singing and poetry. In Japan she is musical royalty. Try not to mock they can play most western bands off then stage.

Thanks Bros. Calling Wagakki Band 'metal' is a bit of a stretch, but not ridiculous. They are an extremely talented Hybrid of traditional Japanese instruments melded with tradiional Western Rock/Metal instruments. I can tell you enjoyed it, so it was a Win even if not truly 'Metal'. For me, part of the fun of exploring International music is the cultural aspect - which is magnified with Asian music because they are SO f-ing culturally different. Still it's refreshing and Cool to hear, and the staging and theatrics make it even more so. Here is a video of Amy Lee singing Bring Me To Life with Yuko and the Band, and a full orchestra - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntFheteKsJ2meoE.html . Maybe not a 'reaction', but it's worth watching anyway. I suspect Mrs Bro will Love it.

First of all ... Babymetal is nowhere near on Wagakki level ! This is a Superband of the highest order ! Their shows are second to none. They are master and teacher of their instruments. If you wanna been blown away try this here. "Kyoukasuigetsu +Tsukini sakebuyoru" from React tour 2019 or "Hakushu Kassai" from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 .
