The one in the video is the exact replica made as a prize offered for people who contributed generously to the fund to get the original back home, the tang on real one is covered in a layer of black rust (this is normal for ancient blades and actually protects the steel from oxidisation) but the blade itself on the original is in excellent condition with a few signs of its true age along the blade which no matter how well a sword is looked after will always show with time.

I understand that the sword we see in the video is a reproduction. It is not impossible that the blade could look this good after hundreds of years, but the nakago (tang) should absolutely not look this shiny on an old sword!

Swords in japan are passed down for generations and treated as relics, of course its in perfect condition

That’s exactly what I said to myself when I saw them, too! Damn, so badass, and sinister looking even. Like Hellfire itself, as if touching them would burn your soul or something. Lol. Those hamon lines are at least twice as big as any of the others I’ve ever seen before and cover the entire blade portion of the katana (two thirds of the width even reaching the spine, when normal hamons only take up roughly one third). What a monster! The person who forged this sword must have been the genius grandmaster smith of his day. Lol. I bow down to such skill and artistry.

Yes the ancient blade masters of Japan were all taught by legendary Chinese swordsmiths.

This Sword Yamatorige also known as Sanchōmō ( forest fire on a distant mountain) So the hamon (tempered pattern) is uniqe.

that is a modern replica of the sword they HOPE to buy. notice the tang?....it has fresh marking on it, in the 1200's they did not mark them, the original is not signed like that.

the Fukuoka Ichimonji school is really different. of course you can make a replica (utsushi) of the sword but it can't replace the uniqueness of old smithing school techniques

Himura Kenshin is a fictional anime character. Uesugi Kenshin (who was inspiration more or less for Battousai's character) was the real life historical figure who owned this sword.

Seeing that it was probably re-polished by a master Togishi, the best it possibly can. But I believe its a convex blade (niku) so there are sharper swords out there with a less obtuse angle, but this one would stay sharper for longer.

@@PainkillerDCXVI Any sword can be as sharp as the swordsmith wants, even a cheap weirdly shaped sword can be razor sharp (but I believe you meant the cutting ratio?*), what really matters is how durable the edge and the blade overall are. shape has little relation in how long it's gonna stay sharp, it's the material and heat treatment. Japanese swords undergo differential heat treatment (the clay they apply before) so the carbon content is focused on the edge making it stiffer and stay sharp longer but at the cost of making it more brittle ad making the spine "soft" (more prone to the edge side shattering and once the sword bends it stays bent). as for the material, unfortunately japan had little iron and inferior forges, they couldn't properly melt iron which forced them to "fold" the steel because of the impurities and uneven carbon content, which resulted in the famed folded steel out which actually is barely inferior to the best others had to offer. In conclusion barely any different. in short Japanese swords are focused on the durability of the edge whereas (most of) the rest of the world focused on the durability of the sword as a whole. So yes because this is a masterly forged katana from top quality material its edge should be quite durable. *cutting ratio, the more "bent/scimitar-ish" (forgot the term) the sword is the longer will the blade stay in contact with the target and thus cut/slash more, but at the cost of range.

True that is is theirs. But Japan was never colonized like the rest of Asia, except for also maybe Thailand. If that sword was taken out of Japan then it was sold probably at auction to private collector. Or even gifted. Even up to American occupation in the 40's there was limitations on what the victor could exploit for fear of rekindling a fierce Japanese resistance. I am still happy they're getting their history back. Learn about Uesugi Kenshin he was the man.

Ya that is kinda mind blowing! I know just recently over the past 5-10 years ago it was discovered that America had the mummy of Ramses the 3rd in the New York museum. It was acquired in a purchase of a bunch of mummies years ago! But once it was realized who they had (Ramses the 3rd, being one of their most revered and one of the most successful pharaohs of the Egypt) we GAVE it back to the Egyptian government because it was an Egyptian pharaoh and not just a mummy of no big deal! And I think that is the right thing to do! I would hope that if say France found that somehow they had one of the original copies of the U.S. constitution, that they would give it back to use seeing it belongs in the U.S.

Through the conflict of war, people buying them, people being gifted them, etc. etc... You do know that it is a person that made the sword right? Who then sold it in exchange for money to someone else, and from there it exchanges hands throughout time. You do know that people are allowed to own something that is from another country right? And once it changes hands it is no longer the property of the previous person. That is how they can "have the nerve" to sell them "their history", it is no longer their property though after it was sold originally.

Do not sell it or destroy it. It’s a piece of history it holds no evil. The only evil, if there was evil, was it’s intent by its user in the war and they are long gone. These weapons are history that needs to be preserved.

yes. with the help of donations, the city was able to acquire the yamatorige. it is now kept in the Bizen-Osafune Museum

we don't really know though. it's over 700+ years so the smith's name probably was lost to time. but we do know that the sword was forge by a smith from the Fukuoka Ichimonji school
