I watched tv the first couple months I came to Japan and then never turned it on again. lol Although I still remember watching a show where a guy dressed up as savannah animals and then went to confront those animals in the actual savannah, and that was genuinely one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen.

@@Liam-yz4wg More literal translation (which to me is more humorous) is: The people who like it definitely appear to like it, though, right? (So it can't be bad.) Avoiding saying something is bad is very important. Though this means that the most cutting comments are the kind a mother-in-law would use. Compliments with a knife waiting underneath.
@littlefishbigmountain3 жыл бұрын
dogchaser520 Considering that in Japanese you’re not really supposed to definitively state how someone else really feels as you have no way of truly knowing that, saying someone _seems_ to like something is as close as you can get to saying that they do in fact like something, even if they’ve told you themselves many times and you’ve seen them genuinely enjoy the thing many times before. That’s not really a thing in English tho pretty much at all (and certainly not to the same extent), so leaving out that little indirectness isn’t necessarily a less accurate translation (not that you’re saying it is) That being said, that little added indirectness gives it an even more “Japanese feel” that I agree makes it more humorous, even funnier, particularly because in this specific context it plays perfectly into the heart of the joke. Especially with that added touch of seeking agreement at the end On the surface it says practically nothing, merely a laughably self-evident statement, but what it actually means is hidden in several layers underneath (granted, comparatively quite obvious layers in this instance)
@ngyuxin14632 жыл бұрын
the first time my mom flipped to a japanese channel was also a food program... the host went to a local supermarket and bought multi-flavoured ice-cream. took one bite of the chestnut-yam mix and said "it tastes... unique! some people would definitely appreciate this flavour!" and it took me a second to realise that she didn't like it 😂

When I was in Japan at the start of 2020 before I started learning, turned the TV on a couple of times and it was exactly this. In one particular program the hosts were going crazy over this woman eating some very plain looking biscuits. The people in the little windows were very excited.

I ended up interested in Japan when I worked at a university - I had a workspace in the arts and languages building, and they had a satellite tv feed, and I remember very clearly watching a Japanese channel which had a regular show, which featured two men and two women, all in formal wear - gowns and tails - eating a five course meal in real time, with not a word spoken.
