Hi John. Very cool to see this water dispenser offering free water. I think this works great in Japan but other places I feel would get vandalized and destroyed. Sadly there are people with no love for beautiful things like this. One of the many things that make Japan such a beautiful place to live.

It would be interesting to see if this water dispenser was only installed for summer months to help prevent heat stroke incidents, and then removed in the winter so the water supply doesn't freeze up.

The U.S. has water fountains in parks and public buildings and lobbies of private buildings and malls. But I don't like using them, especially the ones at parks, as those never seem clean. For Tokyo these seem ideal, they are bottle fillers, not fountains and culturally Japanese people likely won't ruin them.

Lack of public, accessible, widely available water sources is something modern cities should be dealing with...it is fundamental to society and governments do a piss poor job with it. My city, only just last year, started a pilot project of hooking temporary fountains to fire hydrants. We as as society have done a poor job leveraging access to this fundamental resource. Glad to see tiny steps in the right direction.

I think this is more of an effort by the government to save plastic (and material usage and logistics services and greenhouse gas emissions from them more broadly) rather than to save consumers money, though saving money is a bonus.

Water is heavy. So, trucking in water rather than letting water flow in passively by gravity creates a lot more emissions than one would expect.

I don't know much about other cities, but in the metropolitan areas of Greater Sacramento and the Bay Area (who both get their water primarily from local snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains), proximity-activated water bottle fillers as part of a refrigerated filtered drinking fountain machine are commonly located indoors within public libraries, other government buildings, tertiary education institutes, shopping malls, power centres, and even fitness clubs. Those dispensers are promoted as a way to save disposable bottles, and they have an LCD counter on them which is based on the lifetime volume of water dispensed, not the number of fill-ups. They are manufactured by Elkay. I've also seen Mudrock, but those are not refrigerated, not sensor-activated, probably do not have a filter, and do not have a counter on the number of bottles saved.

I had my first trip to Asia from NA last year (Singapore) and the lack of public water was noticeable. I had, wrongly, assumed - especially in such a rich nation as Singapore - that such would be readily available given the heat climate. Such a fundamental resource. If your city is advanced enough ot have fire hydrants there is zero reason why it shouldn't have water dispensers along side. (NA is no better, it simply suprised me that in a country so rich and hot that this isn't standard)
@eisenklad
@eisenklad Жыл бұрын
singapore is opportunistic in both its people and governance. there are water dispensing taps attached outside park washrooms. the other water fountains in parks are in disrepair due to either low priority on maintenance list or get vandalised often. in shopping malls and community centers, there are water fountains but they are tucked away, a ploy to push bottled water from shops/vending machines. in housing estates, if you leave a tap usable to the public, people will abuse it by either collecting water for home use or washing their cars. its why carparks have a timer water dispenser that takes from 20-50 cents for them to wash their cars.

@@onlyinjapanGO thanks John. Of course, I was being flippant. (Never Die!)...and I totally agree that paid water is INSANE. The soft drink companies in US and Japan realized the profit margin was through the roof on bottled water back in the 80s, and put much of their ad budget toward pay water. Easy money, but people get taken. Yes, I love this idea in Tokyo, where Japan has no water issues like here in Western USA. I will say this, there are many towns on the California Coast with TERRIBLE tap water. We have to buy it when we are down there. But other than certain towns, basic tap water is fine. That being said, that Suntory mountain water was pretty damn good when I had it a couple time in April (when I ran out of 100 yen coins)...LOL.

People who say water = water are wrong but I have to admit most of them are almost the same ... I for one don't drink water from the brand Gerolsteiner because it is slightly salty and has a weird taste because of lots of minerals and such in it .... supposedly healthier then other water but its expensive and disgusting ^^V Also not sure if it was in a video or if I actually saw it myself but I think this one water despenser in your video was there for some years already oO? Also doubt it will be a Problem for vending mashines as people still buy sugar water and such as well as people like me who don't like non carbonated water much. I also believe that bottled water often tastes like plastic at least after it was opened for a while .... I understand why we use plastic instead of glass but most drinks taste so much better out of glass bottles.
