Spring candle breaking on a Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora) is a really valuable tool we can use to help manage the distribution of resources in your bonsai. Successfully developing a Japanese White Pine is about balance; holding back stronger areas and encouraging the weaker areas. It is a simple task that I breakdown and explain in this video. It will help you develop balanced and beautiful Japanese White Pine bonsai.
One of the bonsai in this video has a styling video which is worth a look - • Japanese White Pine - ...
Thanks for checking it out and I'm sure it will help you develop some beautiful bonsai.

Thanks Scott! As always, great content. I have a large nursery stock white pine that I’m trying to drive to back bud. Should I be pruning now, or just pinching across the tree to focus growth on the sacrifice branch (main trunk)?
@BonsaiMatsu

Thanks Adam. You may need to selectively candle break in the strongest areas only. That will push resources to weaker areas and prevent die back or further weakening. Shoot me a message with some pics and I’ll have a look for you too.

Thank you. Does it make a difference if you leave some of those candles you've broken longer than others?
@BonsaiMatsu
@BonsaiMatsu 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Milly. It depends how many needles will be left on the candle as to how strong that particular area will be. The important part of the breaking process is that the candle you break gets no longer or stronger and resources gget distributed elsewhere on the pine.

Very interesting. Do you remove the candles by pinching ? Intent it better to use scissors for this purpose ? Doesn't pinching damage the tree ?
@BonsaiMatsu
@BonsaiMatsu 10 ай бұрын
Scissors may damage the developing needles and I don’t want to remove the candles, just strong the strongest from getting too strong and push resources to weaker buds on the bonsai.

Thanks for sharing the video Scott, but as a beginner, I'm a little confused. I recently bought a White Pine from a garden centre here in the UK with the hope of developing it into a Bonsai. The pine has really long candles and I'm not sure if I need to shorten them to help with ramification or what I should be doing. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott, if I want to create back budding next season ( I'm in Canada ) Should I not pinch my white pine candles? Thanks again.
@BonsaiMatsu
@BonsaiMatsu 2 жыл бұрын
The stronger the pine the more chance of back budding so I wouldn’t break the candles if you plan to cut back. You may still want to break the candles at the apex to push strength to lower areas though.

If you have a young tree in development and you are trying to increase the overall size of the tree should you leave the candle untouched to extend the overall branch length ?
@BonsaiMatsu
@BonsaiMatsu 4 ай бұрын
Yes that would be my plan. This is more for trees in the refinement stage or balancing the strength.
