Jarabi - Kora with Sanjally Jobarteh and Remy Cox

I was incredibly fortunate to apprentice with kora legend Sanjally Jobarteh for a month in the Gambia. I lived with him on his compound in a rural village called Kembujeh. Everyday I listened to the jungle book birds, ate lemonos and immersed myself in Mandinka music. Sanjally gave me my first lesson on the kora and four weeks later, on our final day together, we recorded this song, Jarabi.
Much respect and thanks to Sanjally for sharing his time, his music and his culture with me. This man's incredible talent is matched only by his solemn humility. I am grateful to have been woven into this rich tapestry of musical heritage.

Respekt the griot, forever. My name is Peter from Sveden. Im a djembefola. I first after leaving Sweden and leave to Norway. In 1991 i met an wery interesting man named Sankung Jobarteh. That time i was hoked by the djembe I hear Mbeba Jammeh playing the djembe ( The Gambia ) Oh… This is from god. I still play the djembe.

No. the player is a disciple of Sanjally Jobarteh. sanjally is the father of Sona who is not in the video. Sona is 40 years. Her father must be 60+. The other guy is too young. The title of video is misleading

The Kora should compliment the griot or Joli voice , Real Joli have very deep voice, when you use those metal harness - you insult the joli , most importantly the entire Mandika culture. Reason why women do not play the Kora- Get the metal harness off the Kora pole. It is demeaning to the entire culture. An Older Mandinka from the Gambia told me, and I believe every single word he said.
