The story of Jarno Saarinen - 'a truly brilliant rider'. Featuring Imola 200 and Tribute to Saarinen, this two-part compilation disc is introduced by six-times World Champion Geoff Duke OBE.
Within only a few months of his international race debut, Jarno Saarinen, Finnish ice-racing champion, went from obscurity to being the name on the lips of every motorcycle racing fan.

One month after the 'Imola 200' in 1973, Jarno Saarinen and Renzo Pasolini were tragically killed during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The second part of this DVD, Tribute to Saarinen, gives further insight into the undisputed talent of the man who many believed would become one of the greatest ever racers. Glorious archive footage shows Saarinen at the French Grand Prix, then the Austrian and finally at Hockenheim just one week before the fatal Monza crash. Featured riders include Agostini, Read, Kanaya and Lansivouri. The film also has touching tributes from his wife Soeli, Phil Read, Rod Gould and Chas Mortrimer.

Jarno was a gentleman and would never run anyone off the track. So tragic we lost him 😢.

Jarno was the greatest I ever saw. I wouldn't compare him to Senna though, I don't recall him ever running anyone off the track deliberately.

I don't think any motorcycle racer would do that. But surely more car racers than Senna did it?

I remember him. His death influenced me to never turn pro as a cafe motorcycle racer, so I never did. However I did street race my 1976 Triumph T140V Bonneville 750 on the streets and back roads of Long Island. Think Isle of Man TT Road Races. I won every road race for 10 consecutive years and was my own mechanic. I retired when I got married in 1986. However I brought my Bonneville out again in 1992 and won against the new 1000cc Fuel Injected Ninja and the new Honda V4 Interceptor. Yes they had more acceleration and a higher top speed. But my Triumph completely out handled them and her motor was stout and strong enough to again win even against these much newer and larger displacement machines. I still have my Triumph and she sit's not 20 feet from where I sit typing all this. I loved racing but I learned for me it's better to race on my terms and not on the factories terms. I never crashed either. These day's I'm riding my new 2015 Harley-Davidson FLHP Police Road King. I no longer race at all. I am a 65 year old cruiser. I also miss Mike Hailwood.

I am glad to say that I think you are wrong. I think that very many people remember him very well. The world of GP motorcycle racing was less exciting after he was no longer there...

Half of Italy remembers him. Jarno Trulli being the most famous. I'd have called my kid Jarno if it hadn't felt phony as I'd never seen the guy race.

He was certainly a talented rider who had the potential to win many word titles. However he must have had a significant power advantage with that 4 cylinder 2-stroke over the MV Agustas. Perhaps his innovation was in developing a riding style that managed to harness that extra power (much as Duke developed a riding style that made the best use of the more limited levels of power and tyre grip available 25 years earlier).

Vous racontez n'importe quoi !! Saarinen a battu Agostini plusieurs fois en 72 avec une moto privée inférieur en puissance , et sous la pluie il était imbattable .

@@jeanclaudevivier7126 I wasn't denying that. I was only pointing out the power advantage that Saarinen's 4 cylinder 2-stroke must have had over the 4-stroke MV Agustas. When it comes to 1972, when he and Agostini met in the 350cc class, well Agostini won the world championship did he not? If I recall correctly Saarinen won the first two Grand Prix when Agostini was riding the old 350cc 3 cylinder machine, a bike that had been around since 1965 and had reached the end of its development cycle and was more than 50% heavier than Saarinen's Yamaha. MV brought out a new high revving 4 cylinder machine to counter the Yamaha (not to counter Saarinen) and from that point most of the wins were Agostini's.
