Here's a great archive clip from the 1972 Bike GP World Championship as Finnish hero, Jarno Saarinen, wins the 250cc Belgium GP at Spa! This newly restored film from the Woods archive also contains rare footage of the 1972 Grand Prix season focussing on Yamaha’s 125cc, 250cc and 350cc efforts.
Highlights from rounds at the Isle of Man TT (hit by horrendous weather - the last time Ago raced there), Dutch TT at Assen (Including rare aerial footage), Spa-Francorchamps and interview with riders featured include Jarno Saarinen, Rod Gould and Chas Mortimer.

I was at Daytona in '73 when Jarno won the 200 on that TZ350 which gave Yamaha their 2nd consecutive win following Don Ende's win in '72 - I remember seeing lots of long faces in the Harley, Triumph, and BSA garages post race- and the most AMAZING thing was that both Don and Jarno did it with ONE fuel stop which meant you couldn't run the jetting conservatively- so I'm sure that all the 2 stroke tuners were reminding their riders to "BLIP" the throttles heavily during downshifting to prevent/ avoid a seizure - GREAT DAY if you're a big 2 stroke fan like me

This year will mark the 50th anniversary of his passing, yet we still come back to watch in awe of his talent all these years later. The original genius of the modern era I think

Jarno Saarinen was to Finland what Johnny Cecotto was to Venezuela: they both put their respective countries in the vicinity of motorcycle races, sports that before them did not interest. Do you imagine that they had run in the same category? It was a pity Saarinen had died so young when he could have won many world championships! Greetings from Venezuela

Allegedly he was the originator of the "knee down" style, I vaguely remember KR saying he borrowed the move from Jarno, what a legend and such a sad demise

Your correct, I remember that article. Kenny said he never saw handlebars at such an angle and he copied that too.

Hem... to tell the truth Pasolini first displayed the knee down on track and Saarinen adopted this technic to approach curve at slow speed .

@@hesekie1 yes bro, and Saarinen down here is ranked as one of us and still remembered ! You'd never guess how many Italian males have Jarno as Christian name in his honor.

Looking at the stats, it's like he made a decision mid season on what title to go for. He'd won in the 350 class early on, but Ago was still a force and he figured that if he got his head down in the 250 class he'd have a better chance of the title. He'd made his point against Ago, but the 250 title was there for the taking.

It was a very sad day that we lost Jarno and Renzo I always wanted to be as fast as him, no chance of course, but to think of what could have been, he was a legend even in his to short life and I think it was Phil Read who said he was the only rider he knew who could ride 10 tenths for the entire race not only that but he was a good engineer and prepared his own bikes right up to when he joined Yamaha in 72. Ironically he was the first rider to for shadow the withdrawal of MV from racing because of the rise of the 2 stroke which MV could not resist and although MV had dominated racing for so long and I was always looking for them to be beaten it was still another sad day when they no longer was there.

It was Phil Read - but what he said was that there were only TWO riders who could ride like that - Hailwood and Saarinen.

I've got to say I hated the 2-stroke era. All those bikes sounding exactly the same! The musical engine notes of the italian and japanese fours, fives and sixes gone - wiped out by a rule change that took a sledgehammer to engineering brilliance and creativity. Once the restrictions on the numbers of cylinders came in the racing lost half its interest for me (the bikes as opposed to the riders).

How can this clip be restored as it says above when there is a big line down the centre of the picture. In this day and age this could be removed easily with todays software.
