The Soviets had him over a barrel. If he hadn't done something about the crisis in Poland at the time with Solidarity they would have intervened. The spectre of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 was looming over Poland and Jaruzelski knew it.

Innej Polski po 1945 nie było tylko komunistyczna, zdradzili nas Brytole i USA w 1945 w Jalcie! Zrobili prezent Stalinowi, geniuszowi manipulacji i zbrodni. Trockiego, wygłosił przemówienie, to Trockoemu zrobili kapitalisci w Meksyku 😂 w II wojny światowej, po wymordowniu oficerów WP w Katyniu i innych miejscach kaznni. Jak do Moskwy przybył gen.Sikorski, gdy III Rzesza Niemiecka napadła na ZSRS. I gen. Stalin cynicznie odrzekł uciekli do mandziurii!

Citizens. Great is the burden of responsibility that falls on me at this dramatic moment in Polish history. It is my duty to take this responsibility. Poland’s future is at stake-the future for which my generation fought and for which it gave the best years of its life. I announce that today a Military Council of National Salvation has been established. Today at midnight, the Council of State, in accordance with the Constitution, introduced martial law throughout the country. I want everyone to understand the motives and the aims of our action. We are not striving for a military coup, for a military dictatorship. The nation has enough strength, enough wisdom to develop an efficient democratic system of socialist rule. In such a system the Armed Forces will be able to remain where they belong-in the barracks. No Polish problem can, in the long run, be solved through force. The Military Council for National Salvation is not replacing constitutional organs of power. Its sole task is the protection of legal order in the country and the creation of executive guarantees that will make it possible to restore order and discipline. This is the last path we can take to initiate the extrication of the country from the crisis, to save the country from disintegration…. (0:00 - 2:00)

Jaruzelski was a rightist opportunist who privatized Polish industry while fooling the lower ranks of the PZPR. We need the KPP to gain its rightful spot as leaders of Poland, nationalize everything privatized by Jaruzelski and Walęsa, and bring freedom back to Poland

In the historical context of the time, he was right to impose martial law. If he didnt do nothing , the soviet army will have invaded with much worse outcome for the polish people. Neither USA or any other Western country will have never actually help Poland in any way. They would have only protested but that was it. USA and Soviet Union had a treaty in which stated that neither superpower will intervened in the sphere of influence of the other. The fact that Poland wanted democracy was irrelevant , because Poland was part of Soviet sphere of influence, so the Soviets could do whatever they liked.

Partly true. We do know now that Soviets were falling economically, from about half of 70's they know that they need to convert economy - they simply were looking for the safe way for them to transform from "first secretaries to CEO's" - that's why they build a "moustache man" Walesa and he in fact backed by Soviet secret service he kidnapped a Solidarity movement with some other agent. Initially born as a movement of disobedient people after Martial Law time Solidarity very changed to the point that many people seen it as laughable - post-communist media very well covered this trick.

"At the December 10 politburo meeting, Andropov hinted at the reasons why the Kremlin's priorities had changed since the time in 1956 when he as Soviet ambassador to Hungary had been instrumental in forcibly preventing its defection from communism and the Warsaw Pact. Citing 'a variety of economic and political sanctions' already prepared by the West that would 'make things very difficult for us,' he reminded his colleagues that, after all, 'we have to take care of our own country.' Suslov supported him by adding that the Soviet Union's investment in detente made it impossible for us to change our position. World public opinion will not allow us to do so.' 96 Thus the tired leaders of the declining superpower proved to have greater sensitivity to long-term Western pressure and the subtle power of ideas than most of their contemporaries, misled by the formidable appearance of Soviet military machine, were prepared to believe... "In trying to justify the need for emergency measures, Jaruzelski's propagandists played on people's fear that Soviet tanks were coming. Yet the fear that gripped the Polish leader as the zero hour approached was not that of Moscow's intervention but of its non-intervention. In the end, all his fears proved unnecessary. Meticulously prepared, the crackdown on December 13 caught both Solidarity and its Western supporters by surprise. The lack of any significant resistance made the question of Soviet military backing moot. Under these circumstances, Jaruzelski's donning the mantle of the nation's saviour was a travesty. His inaugurating military rule by quoting from the national anthem that 'Poland has not yet perished so long as we are alive' added insult to the injury. Yet he impressed enough people who had mistakenly regarded the threat of a Soviet invasion as real rather than pretended, thus giving rise to the myth that not only Poland but also the European order had been saved from a dangerous threat to its stability"

All in all, General Jaruzelski was a very complex man. I read that he was actually from polish aristocracy, then changed sides to the comunists, and after 1990 it was a democrat again. The funny thing is that when american president Bush Sr. came to Poland he discovered that he had much in common with Jaruzelsky than with the democrat opposition in which he saw idealists, but none of them fit to rule a country. By the way what is the situation in Poland today.?Did former polish communist secret services have a saying in Poland affaires? Here in Romania, we are ruled by former communist secret servicemen. The only difference is that some choose USA and others choose to remain under Moscow influence. So this guys alternate to power, sabotaging each other. As long as that happened Romania wont get very far.

Divide and conquer - the same in Scotland where I live from a decade; the same happen in Poland. Previous president had strong ties with post-communist secret services, was even meeting while in being head of the state some ex-Soviet top secret serviceman, off course mass media are strictly controlled so if not social media no one will know about such incidents.

A Strong Leader And While His National May Have Descended Into Anti-Stalin Revisionism His Desire To Preserve Socialism In His Country And Eliminate Traitors Is Commendable In Spite Of That. If The Other Warsaw Pact Nations Had Followed His Example Of Securing Their States Alone Without Soviet Assitence Or Permission Then Maybe The German Democratic Republic And Other Socialist States Would Still Be Standing Today

ANTI- COMMUNIST Poland is now a backwards theocratic state, little more than a Catholic Taliban.
