From very early in my life I senced that here was something worth studying: the life and work of this giant of a man who cared so much about the freedom of his Poles!! And when he received the Nobelprize,I felt like I was standing behind him and applauding louder !🇵🇱🇵🇱🤟! than anyone else!! And visiting the dockworks and the enormous weighbridge still standing there proudly!! Greetings from far away Cape Town❤🇿🇦

Not only an absolute hero and a legend, but a principal political character in the disintegration of the Russian controlled communist system. Sadly, and coincidentally, we are once again living in a time when a Russian dictator is attempting to reclaim his empire by enforcing his will on a free and democratic country. For Western democracies to stand by and do nothing would be an absolute betrayal of everything that heros like Welesa fought for.

I've recently seen Russian - no less - material on how Lech Walesa got Boris Yeltsin to agree for Poland & Co. to join NATO. If you think it was a banality tp join NATO, you haven't done your homework: there were only six (!) years between Russian forces leaving Poland, and the country entering the NATO. And according to the Russian sources, this mustachioed man in the video was behind it.

At what time of the video do they mention that Wałęsa turned out to be a crucial secret communist collaborator who prevented transformation from socialism into a free country and that he is commonly considered as a traitor by most Poles these days?

one minor thing at 6:57 the person crossing is doing orthodox (forehead to chest to right to left) most likely Polish people being catholic would do it forehead to chest to left to right

The Gdansk shipyards and the strikes, the occupation of Poland by the Communists, and the long-term impacts are critical historical facts; efforts in America, too, to remove the truth of the USSR nearly destroying Eastern European countries (e.g., arts, people, homes, education). Big relief to see the popular Polish Pope John Paul II elected at the Vatican in Rome, Italy in the film.

Socialism is irrational by definition and banned here in PL. At least theoretically banned. It's strange thing that while Poles and other in the eastern block called communism per socialism, in US it was just called communism. Like there was a noticeable distinction.

All the b.s. aside please! Fundamental truth is that the commies where and still are in power, so what did bolek do/achive? The commies needed a change of face, Communism was a bad word you see , solidarity allowed the commies transition to a " new" communism . Bolek and JP2 great actors. Poland was more independent then, now all is foreign owned sold off for nothing and in great debt . And poland is told what genders they should accept, not even the commies interfered in such matters, now the modern commies in power are in partnership with their wester commies to push such ideology. You dont believe it? Putin the commie still in power too ,just like the commies in poland.

I believe You when You say it's even worse in Romania than in PL. As a Pole I've watched lecture by former US Ambassador to Romania about American betrayal of Eastern Europe during the transformation period. At the same time You should remember that Wałęsa turned out to be a traitor of the Polish nation, it has been proven by the Public Historic Institute beyond any doubt that he was a secret communist collaborator all this time. In other words he betrayed the anti-socialist movement and effectively prevented any real transformation of our State into a free country. Trust me please, do NOT think of Poland as a country noticeably better than Romania. It's full blown socialism here, this time in a fascist way (they took most of our God-given rights in recent years, state has tremendous control over personal life and business), old socialist clans still hold all (!) of power and assets, they're filthy rich while other struggle real bad. Real bad.

The Gdansk shipyard was higly unprofitable, that‘s why the Commies wanted to sack workers. That was also a condition Western banks attached to their loans. Walesa knew this, of course, and it was the main reason the workers there were so susceptibel to strikes. It was a strike against the sacking of workers. Needless to say, the Commies chose the most troublesome. I don‘t want to minimize the political aspect of the whole thing which required an extra portion of courage. But to fight for a more rationale economie (capitalism) and then complain about the vanishing of an obsolete shipyard is either naive or hypocritical.

Przecież przywódcami Solidarności byli Jarosław i Lech Kaczyńscy, to oni wywalczyli wolność Polsce. To ich heroiczna walka doprowadziła do upadku komunizmu na świecie. To Jarosław był noszony na rękach, Jarosław podpisywał porozumienia sierpniowe, a Lech sprawował faktyczną władzę w związku. o!

To prawda, dzisiaj do wladzy dorwala sie 5 liga Solidarnosci, ktora absolutnie nie zrobila nic, a ktora odbija sobie wlasne nieudacznictwo. Ludzie ktorzy potrafia tylko burzyc a nic nie stworzyc. To tak typowe dla Polski. Jak tylko idzie cos w dobrym kierunku, to zawsze znjadzie sie jakis sku..syn zeby to popsuc.

He deceived SB (secret service) and brougt down communism. ALL ALONE! Do not want to remember who was TW Bolek (secret agent) 1970-1976, forgot that he ended strike in 1980 after 3 days and strike was saved by 3 women: Walentynowicz, Pienkowska and Ossowska who commended to close the 3 shipyard gates. Etc, etc, etc. ALL TRUE and whole story is much complicated than Western knows... :D :D :D
