“Despite the life you’ve lived, do you think I still love you?” So, for context, it’s common in Mormon families that if you leave the church, go against its teachings, or do something “wrong” then you’re burned and family members will not see you the same way anymore. It’s pretty common to hear about young adults who don’t speak to their parents anymore because their parents shun them and refuse to speak to their children anymore. And parents who don’t disown their children, will openly say things against them and often will “lose” love for that kid or treat them differently because of it. And I’m not talking about serious crimes or anything, literally for things as simple as drinking alcohol or not going to church.

Former Mormon here, my theory about why there were multiple Mormons on is basically the culture of Mormonism. It’s very “fake a smile, appearance is everything, lie to save face.” People will say one thing and mean another just to maintain the illusion of being a good or kind person. There’s a lot of silent judgement in Mormon culture. If you aren’t living a perfect life then you’re open to harsh criticism and sometimes even ridicule, which is stupid because no one is perfect. A show like this that exposes truths would be appealing to Mormons who just want straight answers and it works well because everyone has things to hide, just bolstered by the fact that everything is so taboo to “the church.”

I’d also like to say, as an ex mormon, drug use is pretty common. That environment - especially if you’re not perfect, or you are lgbt - is really damaging. I caught my mom calling people just to tell lies about me and cause gossip for that great Mormon sympathy for her. She didn’t care if it affected me - which thankfully it didn’t. But man imagine if I had wanted to stay in the church? You really think I could have told people my mom lied and they actually believe me? You described it all perfectly. I may not be Mormon anymore but the culture is embedded in my non Mormon siblings.

I think that the couple probably thought that the show would be a win-win for them, with Aimee "getting relief" from hearing the polygraph answers, and them winning money for it. I've known a lot of people who thought that they would feel secure in their relationship if they "had proof" that their partner was telling the truth. (I'm using quotes because there's no such thing as a "lie detector"; it's pseudoscience.) But that's not how trust is built in a relationship-- relying on a test to "prove" that something is true or false just reinforces the original mistrust, and it puts partners at odds with one another. Though Mike is not my uncle, I grew up Mormon, and the Mormon way is definitely a lot of casual dating of anyone you know, so sisters would not be strange if it just didn't really click. And then also, on the sex with friends wife question, there is definitely a culture of like, if you're not your partner's first then even if they choose you, it's not as good or you're made to feel less than or their love is less than etc. And also for that to be public there's definitely a huge shame that like, she's a woman to be pitied within her church community.

At least in the area I grew up in, mormons dating an entire family of people is not uncommon. There was even one case where a boy dated every girl in a family of 5 girls and 3 boys. He finally settled on the youngest sister. The entire time, there had been this "Who will he pick?" suspense going on and I think only like two or three of us thought it was a very weird situation all around.

Honestly? I like Mike. I feel like all the “bad” things he confessed to are only bad under the strict, repressive culture of Mormonism. Not to invalidate Aimee’s feelings or anything, I’m sure she’s a victim of indoctrination too, but like that ideology just has SUCH an unhealthy impact on how you view sex and relationships. Mike seems like he just lived his life, and the culture he was raised in deemed that worthy of shame.

Ask questions about things that MATTER that won’t intentionally HURT people for no good reason at all. edit: pretty much all of the questions suck. just glad this show stopped airing.

I’ve struggled with jealousy for years and even though my boyfriend is absolutely amazing, I still have a hard time with it. I know it’s my own issue but if I had to hear the answers to some of these questions I’d probably have an anxiety attack. I’ve come so far over the years but it really sucks when people shame people for being jealous even when they’re not acting on that jealousy. It’s a feeling. It’s really aggravating hearing all of these “do you feel sexually attracted to ______” questions because tbh sometimes people just don’t need to know the answers and that’s okay
@cutesound95632 жыл бұрын
@@daliahmeadow5257 i hope your bf is understanding of the jealousy, it’s a really hard thing for both sides…and YES. No one needs to know unless it suits their boundaries/ relationship style. I had to stop watching this episode just because I started making up stories in my head based off these questions and they weren’t even involving me!!

It's hard too because I really approach that question from societal standards, because that is what often shapes our own standards, so even if you love them more than anyone you've ever loved before, even if they are absolutely perfect for you, they may not be the prettiest in society's eyes. It's bullshit. There's other measures of worth and value in a relationship beyond physical attractiveness.

I thought about it and I think I like Mike. My gut reaction is to be iffy about him, but I think that is motivated by the reactions to his answers more than the answers themselves. I believe religion and norms/expectations about sex and dating played a HUGE role here. So he has fantasies? So he dated other women? So he had sex before? All of these things hold huge weight when looked at through a Christian/Mormon spiritual lens but are not things that we look down on typically in these videos (not saying Jarvis was). Mike's wife was absolutely allowed her feelings and reactions to his answers, but I don't think any of his answers were bad.

I feel like if you didn’t grow up in the culture of fundamentalist religion, then it’s hard to understand what’s (probably) going on here. Fundamentalist Mormonism does not have a healthy relationship with sex and sexuality. When it comes to the risqué, it’s a culture of repression and shame where sex is only meant for heterosexual married couples. In these communities, to have participated in sexual acts before marriage is considered a stain, to the point that it can disqualify you as a potential partner for your abstinent peers and potentially make you a target for judgement/rumors. Given all this, relationships between unequally abstinent fundamentalist religious people are, as you’d expect, complicated. So... From what I can tell, it seems most likely that Amy is in this situation: she loves her husband and they’re faithful to each other, but she remained abstinent until they were married where as Mike did not. This would also explain her unhealthy obsession with and distrust surrounding her sister’s past relationship with Mike. If that’s the case, then I’m not sure Amy deserves much in the way of sympathy (specifically for the sex stuff discussed on the show) because, as much as I hate to see her cry, those tears are for herself. She’s mourning the fact that she isn’t married to a “pure” man. She’s mourning the fact that her husband wasn’t perfectly celibate before they met, and to the point that it’s brought strife into their relationship. She’s making her husband feel guilt and shame for something he did years ago, and it was never any of her business in the first place. She almost certainly married him knowing he wasn’t a virgin, so how is it fair or healthy for her to hold it over him? (If he lied about being a virgin, however, that would significantly change my interpretation of the situation.) I also just want to acknowledge the fact that none of this is really Amy’s fault, and I don’t mean to attack her if it sounds that way. She’s a victim of indoctrination and repressive ideology that she had no choice but to live under for (probably) her whole life. For that, and for the pain it brings her and her loved ones, I feel more sympathy than ever. Sorry for the essay, but this hit too close to home for me, lol. Before I was an atheist, I was exactly like Amy: unhealthily jealous and unfairly obsessed with my partner’s past to the absolute detriment of our relationship.
@TheKaurK2 жыл бұрын
I am sorry you went through that, it’s tough. I am glad you are okay now though :) Also, thank you for the meaningful insight here too. I think you are likely right on this, but even if that’s not the case… your comment here is so helpful in understanding the level of nuance that potently exists in their relationship. Also, super helpful in understanding the dynamics of relationships within fundamentalist cultures.
@karabirb2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad to see someone else say this. I wasn’t raised Mormon, let alone religious, but I grew up around a lot of Mormons, my childhood best friend included. The effect that the ideology has on someone’s relationship with sex is REALLY unhealthy and troubling, and I watched it form in so many people over the years. That kind of repression just straight up is not healthy, and while I’m of course sad for Aimee as she seems to be a victim of it herself, it’s also really frustrating that Mike is being made out as if he did something wrong just for having sex years ago. That isn’t something to feel guilt over :/

Haven't made it to the end of the video yet, but having grown up in mormonism, his dad saying "in spite of the life you've led" makes more sense than a lot of people realize. It is VERY difficult to leave this church, and most people who do are frowned upon and a lot of them are shunned/disowned. Lots of parents blame their kids for leaving because they think they're just going against the grain and doing this to spite their parents, when it's really just the kids figuring out themselves, and it really strains parent/child relationships. Lots of ex-mormons cut off their mormon family when they leave because it's so hard to have so many people you were once close with telling you that you're a shitty person and that you deserve to go to hell. Obviously different people have different experiences but it's very common.

I could be just like Armstrong if your streams weren't at 3 am on weekdays for my timezone :

I feel like that final question was so rough on Aimee bc her husband has not only dated her two sisters, had the show imply he fantasizes about them/find them more attractive than her, but then finds out that (as a Mormon) she was not his first but it was actually her CLOSE FRIEND!!! That’s a lot of feelings of betrayal and a LOT of blows to anyone’s self worth regardless of religion/views on sex/marriage/etc but especially when you consider that it sounds like she thought she was his first up until the polygraph for the show and then learned that she wasn’t and therefore is not his true soulmate has GOT to hurt

20:29 and here we understand why the attractiveness question holds so much weight 😳

Yaaayy! New vid! Is your live on Twitch? Sorry, I’m lame and not “in the know” 😅 I’m trying to be more involved in the communities online that help me feel happy.

I think Jarvis is confusing sexual fantasy with having a passing sexual thought. In this case, I think the show is using sexual fantasy as fantasying or daydreaming about having sex with someone for a length of time, which is a lot different than a random, passing thought.

If Jarvis does do bingo with this "who cares" should be the free space because there is always that part.

48:15 when you're raised with such a strict emphasis on "purity", that can be a really hard thing to hear even when it's not a cheating situation. all growing up you constantly hear about purity and how important it is to wait for marriage and finding out your partner didn't can really mess with your head. especially if they lied about it before.

Mormons have so much baggage and trauma. Its basically a fucking golden goose for content like this.

i have a feeling they might have filmed in a Mormon heavy area. basically every state west of the Mississippi river has a large population of church members. i also wouldn't be surprised if one of the producers was a member or related to someone who was, and they got people to sign up through word of mouth
