Dhar Mann doesn't seem to recognize the difference between slapping a person for saying mean things and defending yourself from a larger assailant who made a confrontation physical and threatening. Telling kids that they shouldn't protect themselves when people attack them is incredibly harmful.

This bothered me too. I can think of a time or two from my childhood when I had to physically fight my way out of a situation, so it always bugs me a little whenever I hear somebody say "violence is never the answer" with absolutely no room for nuance. Like, generally I agree that violence is bad, but don't be a freaking doormat either.

I literally came here to comment this. Like yea violence isn’t the answer (or whatever) but violence literally STARTED this situation. A situation the kid tried multiple times to get out of BEFORE turning to a violence. Dhar Mann should’ve just left this one alone. This situation, this story, this was not his bag.

Yeah, if I was in the kid's situation, being yelled at and pressured definitely would have made me snap. Like I probably would have slapped him too as self defense even though my father never set this bad example for me. I agree what Will Smith did at the Oscar's was over the line, but there's a big difference between slapping someone because they made a joke about your wife and slapping someone because you're being actively confronted/threatened by a bully-

@@sabrinabaskerville YES! It frustrated me that he said to use words, not violence when the kid literally used his words and attempted to de-escalate the situation several times. The bully not only kept putting his hands on him, but he was even pushing him against the locker REPEATEDLY. Dhar Mann could have at least included a scene where any of the kids who witnessed the entire altercation explained what happened. The bully literally got rewarded for being a jerk…

Yes! And I would argue this is the case for things like hate speech/nazis/fascism too. As well as some cases of state violence. People say "violence is never the answer" but don't realize that by saying that, they're actually advocating for GREATER violence by not allowing for defense against violent people/ideologies/systems. (In this case, the bully would just be the state/cops/military or fascist groups). And it seems that most people seem to intrinsically understand that sometimes it's necessary to defend yourself or your community, it's just interesting where different people seem to think that is or isn't okay (especially if they aren't experiencing said violence). But honestly this video reeks of "don't punch nazis!!! :O debate them in the marketplace of ideas! freeze peach!!"

So the lesson is....if you're being bullied, don't defend yourself, buy the bully nice things instead. This is the closest I've ever gotten to being actually angry at a Dhar Mann video. How does he mangle every single moral he tries to teach?
@vlo4829
@vlo4829 2 жыл бұрын
It was "toxic empathy". Once they revealed that the bully had experienced the trauma of his father abandoning the family, EVERYONE including the bully himself suddenly believed he was somehow the victim of EVERYONE who might have made him feel bad. In spite of the fact that he got physical at the lockers first and that he was harassing the boy in the lunch room, we were supposed to feel bad for him for being slapped and for the weird shoe retort, all because we were made aware that something unfortunate happened to him. That's really manipulative. No amount of trauma gives a person the right to try and inflict trauma on others. Being "understanding" and "empathetic" to the degree that you only care about people if they've experienced trauma is dangerous. It actually encourages people to seek out or make up traumatic experiences in order to be believed and/or respected.

He messes up the moral message because he doesn't know anything about what happens in the real world. He picks the demographic he wants to pander to, picks a relevant topic and effectively chooses to say that they are not in the wrong so that the demographic will like him. The script and characters he writes are either presented as a perfect hero of the story (even when they are clearly acting in a horrible way) or a cartoon villain who always regrets their actions immediately and changes to be a better person pretty quickly after they regret what they have done. The message never works because it either over simplifies humans to a point that it assumes that everyone has the same outlook on life and morals or the message basically boils down to not being an ass because you could be mocking someone who is going to be rich.

I asked my 12-year-old what school was like after the Slap, and he said some kids were saying stuff like “oh, if that was me, I’d punch him like this” and dramatically punch the air like we live in an anime. But for the most part it was a few boys giving out teasing insults to their friends and the friends saying “hey, don’t make me go Will Smith on you” and they crack up laughing. My kid said it lasted a couple days, a week at the most, then everyone forgot about it. Basically, 12-year-olds (and younger) have short memories and this news is not just old, but ancient to them. In fact, when I asked my kid if he knew what “the Slap” is, he said “yeah, I remember that meme.” It’s not even real life to him. It’s just another meme in the cycle. He’s barely aware of who Will Smith is (other than some old actor) so why would he look up to him?

@@MrBookworm01 That's the same toxic attitude that the principal portrayed, though. The bullies father walking out on him on him doesn't suddenly make him "the victim" nor does being black make Wesley "the victim" either. The principal should have known about the slap, but the parents also suffered from the same amnesia until she made that convenient "learned behavior" comment, even though the dad was SO proud of his slap that he was doing Livestreams bragging about it. There was a lot more to the slap than just not knowing how to respond to a mean joke properly. It had clearly been building up for a while and Will clearly just kinda snapped and reached a breaking point. Dhar Mann could have done some discussion and awareness raising about mental health, but nah.... gotta make the Will Smith stand-in just a one-note sexist "protect my wahmen" cartoon villain and preach about violence bad and say nothing we haven't heard a million times already.

I was bullied throughout my whole elementary school year and I’ve never used violence once because my mom told me not to ever put my hands on anyone. But the one time I had put my hands on someone, it was when she was choking me out, I had hit her so I don’t get hurt even worse. I told the principal and he saw that she had put her hands on me but since I’m black and she looks white he let her off. The principal is very clearly racist she was there when the chanting was happening and she had done nothing but once he defends himself he’s one to blame? And yes I get that the bully was going through traumatic things I went through the same thing but I’ve never once in my life bullied or put my hands on my bullies until the time where I had to defend myself. Dhar mann is not telling kids the right thing, they should be taught that they should use violence only when people hurt and or threat them!

Having the Jada Plinkett Smith stand in say it was just a joke when the real life Jada was obviously hurt by the comments and Will was acting in response to her being upset, not from toxic masculinity making him upset people were laughing at his wife, is so gross. Edit: it's also gross that they changed the joke to be about weight instead of disability, particularly since the actress is thin.

honestly the way the principal handled the bully was so accurate. like, this was a few years ago, but i was being physically and verbally hatecrimed and bullied on the daily for like four years when i moved schools, and it got to a point in middle school where i just stopped going to school for a month and didn't tell my mom why i refused to go until the end of that month. which lead to her taking me to talk to the principal. straight up went into that office with my mother and this grown woman listened to me explain the violence i'd experienced at the hands of two major aggressors and she really looked at us and said 'well, these girls have problems too. so my hands are tied. but i will tell the teachers to look out for you.' in our 'no bullying tolerated' school. and then one of the teachers went and gossiped with my bullies about why i wasn't at school and my mom pulled me out of school lol. but like. straight up WHY ARE ? PRINCIPALS LIKE THAT ??? AND HOW DOES DHAR MANN KNOW ??

This was REALLY strange and promotes a really bad moral code. -The response to the slap was unanimously positive from the public. Near opposite of the actual reaction to Will's slap. But if we go along with the near-unanimous public support angle, he would probably get a lot of backlash for the apology. "The public" in this one didn't make sense. -Even for Dhar Man, the "standing up for yourself makes YOU the bad guy" lesson equating Will/the dad's slap over a comedy sketch to standing up for yourself against a probable threat... That was AWFUL. And he didn't just extend it to the slap. He made that point down to shaming the "Ray Bans" kid at the end by acting like his shoe comment is what was REALLY bad about the cafeteria situation and not the fact that he was being harassed by that kid for no reason. -I've never heard the term "toxic empathy", but I guess I've seen it. Experiencing trauma doesn't make someone a good person nor should someone's trauma be used by them or others as an excuse to treat others badly. The bully backstory was unnecessary in such a short video, but even with a tragic backstory, that doesn't make him righteous. The principal, the boy's parents, and even the bully himself at the end ALL acted like doing ANYTHING to upset him was morally wrong, regardless of what his own actions were. He instigated every bad thing that happened to him. He got physical with the other kid first. He was in the wrong, and that doesn't change just because of his home situation. Having empathy for a person, a group/type of person, or situation should not cloud people's judgment of right and wrong.

Why did they take an incredibly particular situation replicate it almost 1:1 but give Knock Off Will Smith a school-aged child? All of Wheel Smith's kids are young adults; I don't think any of them are going to internalize "the slap" as part of their core values. Like they're still relatively young, but old enough to be fairly independent of their parents. Also... Dhar Mann using Not-Jada as his mouthpiece in this one felt really bad to me, especially with how dismissive the end was of the pretty things Fake-Chris was saying? The whole story hinges on these misogynistic comments made against her, and she's not even allowed the dignity of voicing her feelings about them? She just has to shift back and forth between "mother mode" and "wife mode"... which is actually an improvement because unlike some other Dhar Mann characters she's the voice of reason and not a stock b* character... It just feels really bad watching this knowing there's a real woman out there who kind of inspired the story and I'm pretty sure Dhar Mann views women as one dimensional wives/mothers at their very best. It wasn't so bad with the other characters imo because Not-Will was sooo unrealistic, the kid doesn't have a real world counterpart, and Not-Chris wasn't there for more than a single scene, but it felt extra exploitative of Jada.

Law & Order has been doing this same thing for decades. It isn't presented as if it were a re-creation, it's a fictionalization. Dhar Mann seems to only want to have clear cut villains as opposed to flawed people who make mistakes, and this is why we have so many crossing over in cartoon supervillain. And then they do these sudden 180s cause they can't be people who have to learn and grow. Or they get their terrible ending cause evil never wins. And you know, the good guy is always this near flawless saint that's just filled with wisdom. It's why most of his videos covering heavier topics end up being awful. He either doesn't know how to write real humans, or he knows if he does, it'll screw up his ending "lessons" that are supposed to change lives as he says.

I was taught to give the aggressor 3 spoken warnings, and if they kept bothering me, respond in kind. The bully was physically attacking him!! Asking him to stop wasn't working. The kid was an entirely different situation than the father, who responded to solely words with violence. This is just teaching kids to not protect themselves against bullies :/

I was bullied in school. It's too bad, but I think the faculty sided more with the bullies than with the victims. At best, problematic student relationships were perceived as inconveniences. At the worst, some teachers seemed to have a pecking party mentality that led to their believing the targets deserved it. I don't remember bullies being called to account much, but I was often called out for "reacting wrong." I was told to "laugh it off" and not let being called fat and ugly upset me. As a kid, laughing along with bullies who were verbally abusing me was a kind of self-treason that I just couldn't manage to do.

It's not just about the bully not being punished, it's about leaving kids in harmful situations. The award ceremony is already a circle jerk of people who think they're better than everyone else giving themselves awards. A few jokes that humble them a bit for the viewers shouldn't be a problem. "It's just a joke" is the right attitude. You pretending to be offended and people acting like this is "a cause" is just silly. Comedians tell jokes. It's not "about more". Lessons from this episode: - violence isn’t the answer - verbal defense is also bullying. “at least my glasses are raybands, it looks like you got your shoes from the dump” (kid says after bully randomly comes up and starts picking on him) - you shouldn’t use any sort of violence, even if you’re being physically assaulted and verbally berated by a mob. - you should buy your bully a gift, based on what another kid said to them. (A kid who themselves where getting bullied) - you can bully other kids as long as you’re family situation isn’t great. Thanks Darr Mann. After reviewing my notes I’ve decided to start bullying other kids so I can get some Jordans. You really aren’t just telling stories, but changing lives.
