Hi Geoff Very useful as looking for my first DB thou for more jazz groove-based recordings. I am moving from playing fretless bass over a number of years. I was assuming a 3/4 size best, as I am 6’2”, with a D-stop neck heel. As a newbie, I would not want to start too expensive and take your good advice about ’set up’ and strings. Sourcing such an instrument ‘Up North’ is problematic as is purchasing at a distance so I wondered if you have any advice re suppliers. Thanks, Chris Sheffield, UK

Hi Chis, yes a 3/4 bass with a D neck is really the standard size which suits the majority of bassists. It's actually quite rare to find a true 4/4 and I wouldn't recommend you start with anything smaller than a regular 3/4. Options for finding a suitable instrument are to ask local bass teachers if they know anyone, the for sale section of basschat, or possibly a dealer, but I can't think of one near you to recommend who sells starter instruments.
