The story of “Red Eye,” a 1959 Les Paul Standard, begins in a store window. Much of the red color on the top faded while displayed in that store window, except for a patch below the toggle switch that was covered by a hangtag. Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd purchased it in 1982 and nicknamed it “Red Eye” after its distinctive appearance, and it was his long-time sidekick. After Ed passed away in 2018, six-time GRAMMY® winner and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Isbell purchased Red Eye. This storied guitar has now found new life with Jason, often being featured in his stage and studio performances.
In this excerpt from The Collection with Jason Isbell, Jason talks about his first time playing “Red Eye” in the now-famous KZfaq video on Carter Vintage Guitars and recounts how he did everything he could to make sure that guitar became part of his collection. Listen as he talks about the history of the “Red Eye” guitar, where it got its name, and how he knew it was the guitar he had to have.
Introducing a Collector’s Edition clone of Jason Isbell’s famous ‘59 Les Paul, “Red Eye.”
This special Collector’s Edition limited run of replications uses new 3D scanning technology and ultra-precise Murphy Lab aging techniques to aid in hand-crafting an effective clone of Red Eye. Every detail has been thoughtfully replicated, from the exact playing wear to the sonic character and solid Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The figured maple tops were even personally hand-picked by Jason Isbell.
Only 59 of these exceptional instruments have been hand-made by the expert luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop and Murphy Lab in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of this extraordinary Collector’s Edition run. Learn more HERE: bit.ly/4c6V84M

Crazy you didn’t even mention that Ed King had this guitar robbed at gun point from his house! For years he was without it until one day he went to a guitar trade show, and met a Japanese couple who had created the book ‘beauty of the burst’. As Ed is flicking through, he instantly recognises Red Eye on one of the pages! After begging the couple to find out where they photographed it, he learned it was now ‘owned’ by renowned billionaire Dirk Ziff.. supposedly locked away in his ‘Les Paul vault’ (rumoured to house 300+ 58-60 bursts) eventually with some legal help, Ed got the guitar back, and kept it until his death.

It's didn't get stolen at gun point. It got stolen during load in when the did the reunion tour in the 90s. I met Ed shortly after he got it back from New York. My brother asked him about it because he heard he finally got it back. He pulled it out, picked the beginning riff of Sweet Home, which was strange sound not coming from a Strat. He handed it to me and I was stunned by the weight and the energy around this instrument. It felt like it might levitate. My brother asked what the current value was, he rattled off the ungodly number and my brother to it from me and placed it back into Eds hands and said Please don't hand him anything else that we would have to rob more than one bank to pay for it. He chuckled asked if had had trouble holding on to things. I replied, mainly just money, and can't say I ever lost my grip and dropped a guitar before, but I'd rather that not be the first one. That was a fun day.

I agree 💯 with the instrument speaking through vibrations, ect. When I found my dream 59 Custom Shop Les Paul Iced Tea I played it unplugged to feel the instrument and connect with it. Looking at the wall of 5 59's it was my first pick visually looking at the top and when it was hands down the one that spoke to me and played the best the search was over. My son also loves the guitar so it's so cool to know we share the guitar. Great video Mark itwas great spending time with you at the Garage last month! Lucloves his Firebird and has been playing Black Sabbath riffs!!

All I can hear when I see a guitar like that is Nigel’s Tufnel’s stern commands: “Don’t. Don’t touch it. Don’t even look at it. It can’t be played-never.” I also think of Toht’s face melting when they open the case.

Cant' think of a better custodian for Red Eye. He really plays it and takes it out on tour and shares it's legacy. Tons cooler that he has it than some collector who puts it in a safe.

I love his reverence for it - not just for its historical and musical value but for its gargantuan monetary value. It's nice to hear a musician of Jason's level still worry about whether or not he can afford a guitar (Mike Campbell went through a similar thing when buying his '59, as I recall).

He's absolutely right. I never plug them in when I buy one. You can adjust the electronic aspect infinitely but you can't correct the tone of the wood if it's bad.
@andrewbecker3700
@andrewbecker3700 2 ай бұрын
Isn't that a coincidence, when everyone's bickering about tonewoods again. This isn't a new interview. Gibson knows what they're doing. I don't care what names on the headstock, as much as how the guitar feels and plays in my hands, unplugged. Anyone who says materials and construction techniques don't matter, are lost. Right now, Epiphone is putting out some shockingly good reproductions of a '59 LesPaul standard. If you search around as hard as I have, and know what to look for. There's some jewels to be found in them. Luckily we don't have to all try'n buy real bursts.
@andrewbecker3700
@andrewbecker3700 2 ай бұрын
@@mylogify You said it, not me. I agree. I've never played a real burst, so it's a moot point. Alls I'm saying is wood and materials matter. Pickups and electronics can be upgraded. When you get a "good" one. Its very apparent, before ever plugging it in. I have alot of cool guitars, that all have something unique about them. But I still believe there's something special about a good LesPaul standard. They're different. Why? That's up to the person who owns it. If you don't know, you don't know. Thankfully , I now understand this.

@@andrewbecker3700 it's crazy that you say that. Ed and I spoke a lot about guitars and tone and both he and I loved playing MIJ strats and MIM teles. Of course, vintage guitars are awesome but to put it plainly, Ed was cheap and he loved finding a great player for next to no money. That not to say he didn't appreciate great guitars, he plopped down the money for a vintage 58 dark burst late in life and it is a gorgeous guitar. Even so, great guitars don't have to cost insane amounts. When I go looking I play every guirar I have time to play and sometimes I find one and sometimes I don't. It's all as simple as finding one the feels right. I'm sure it makes no sense to anyone else but when I find a truely great Guitar, it feels like it's playing itself and I'm more just hanging on to it.

@@BrettBoucher That's right. Another MAJOR point, that's not talked about nearly enough. Is set up. The best guitar in the world, with all the potential to be "the one". Doesn't mean jack squat, if the damn things unplayable. Lotta people are out there endlessly searching for the perfect guitar. When they may already have it, and never know? If there's anything I've learned over the years. It's make do the best you can, with what you have. By learning how to do almost all the work on guitars myself. I've greatly increased my appreciation for the guitars I've owned. I'm constantly tweaking and modding them, almost continuously. They just get better and better, and then maybe become the one? It's all in the minds eye. You certainly don't need to spend much over $1500 nowadays to get something killer.

Man, I'd be terrified to take that thing on the road. I know he's a big deal and I'd be just me with a small box trailer staying in motels, but still... That cost twice what any house I'm likely to ever own will, and is irreplaceable, insured or not. Ballsy. I love hearing him playing it, though, and I'm glad he has it.

That flametop is stunning, and the fading is wow, warm and honey/dark golden shade. It's great that these oldies are given a new youth by being played esp on tour, they don't belong behind a glass like rare paintings, no matter how beautiful they look and age. I still believe it's nuts AF to spend that much $ on a guitar esp in this Economy, but i can understand the appeal bc damn that one looks amazing.
