This is my full build of the Arifix 1/48 Hawker Hurricane, this was built as part of a group build in British Aviation In Scale (BAIS) Facebook: / 1185462564870290
This GB was run by Tim over at ‪@TimsScaleModelling‬, check out his KZfaq channel if you have not already!
The Airfix kit is a nice and simple build, basic construction and quick to complete. The Hurricane was an incredibly important fighter in 1940 and helped turn the tide during the Battle of Britain 80 years ago, the aircraft is usually overlooked in favor of the Spitfire so it was fitting for this to be my choice as a tribute!

I know I said it is important to remember the history behind these things and then called this a Spitfire!!!

Only a single Battle of Britain pilot survives. It is to our nations shame that so few of these hero’s were properly recognised .... while sports people, politicians, businessmen and professional sycophants, by the dozen, were knighted.

Fantastic. I love out of the box builds, especially on one of my favorite aircraft of all time. Spitfires are beautiful, but Hawker aircraft just seem so "business-like". Well done.

That’s a great build and a nice kit. Just added one to the stash to build this winter. Air Fix has really stepped up its game. I really hope they do a FW-190 and a some pacific theatre aircraft as well. Imagine if they did some bombers!!!

The Hurricane looks so crude compared to the Spitfire, but that's why I like it. It looks as if it was meant for war. Obviously I will always love the Spitfire, but the Hurricane is criminally overshadowed and arguably one of I not the most underrated and under-appriciated aircraft of WWII. Great build.

Looks like a really good kit here! Builder made it look fun also! To those that think Tamiya is the only gift to the modeling world, I say this- Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire and P51D use those stupid individual prop blades. Inferior! A one piece machine mold for propeller is likely to have near perfect tolerances, in regard to proper alignment of prop blades. How much does even 1/2 MM off on one sloppy fitting separate blade translate to in scale? Yes, Tamiya 1/32 are some of the worlds best, but like wise, some of Airfix 1/24 kits are also, like the old 1/24 Hurricane and new 1/24 F6F Hellcat etc..

I'm building the BoB release right now. Not only did I have the issue with the panel under the nose standing taller than the wing but the upper wing halves stuck out farther than the bottom leading edge. Not sure why but I also have the sea Hurricane in the stash so I'll be applying lessons learned on that build.

I have seen some videos floating around with more modern Eduard kits. They seem to have designed their new decals in a way that the carrier film lifts away afterward to leave the decal. Maybe these extradecals are in the same style? They look great whatever the reason! Nice work!

The only British fighter in the Battle of Britain worth fighting in..... A Hawker Hurricane 🤦🏼‍♂️ spitfire? how could you Jas that was a massive kick in the gonads unsubbed ... 😜 J/k This is one of them aircraft I have in my "stash" that I am scared to build because I love the shape so much and I want to do it justice. You did it justice 👍🏻

Very nice Hurricane! I don't know if it's the fog of old age, or what. But, I seem to remember Airfix kits of the 1960's and 70's being fairly good kits. Albeit, it is true; I haven't built one in 20 years or so. I wonder if they changed or in some way cut back? Nevertheless, a very fitting tribute to what some very brave men did 80 years ago.

They were crude compared to these new tooling models from Airfix. I have an old one here and it's the 1/72 CAC Boomerang, sort of a seat, blob for a pilot and thats the inside done and dusted. The new tooling 1/72 Spitfire is just beautiful inside the office as seems to be the Hurricane which I have yet to start.

The underside was duck egg blue if im not mistaken
@troysmith5144

"duck egg blue" is description, but not a given MAP colour. The underside colour was switched to Sky in June 1940, but given the massive amount of aircraft to repaint, mixes or substitute colours were possibly used. This has been debated and discussed in modelling circles for many years. Note, Sky is not blue, but a pale green. colloquial descriptions of "duck egg blue" and "duck egg green" are common from the era and owwards. P2923 VY-R is a very good candidate for for a Sky mix or substitute, as it has a non standard pattern, going up the cowling and over the wing leading edges, this is seen oin several Hurricanes based at RAF Debden in July 1940, both of 85 and 17 Squadron, which shared the base, and is likely a quirk of their paint shop. unfortunately the builder here has trusted the Xtradecal instructions, which specify Sky Grey, which is just a guess on their part, and they also fail to note the non standard repaint, and they also get the code letters too narrow and the yellow roundel outer ring too narrow. They also come up with the weird idea the spinner is black with green stripes. 85 were using flight coloured spinners at this time, and "best guess" from this and tonal matches is Red with two white stripes. For fuller details on this and photos of the actual aircraft. www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234948380-hurricane-colour-question/&do=findComment&comment=1431441

Not obviously stated in the video, the builder has used an Xtradecal Battle or Britain sheet. Xtradecal frequently make mistakes, or guesses, this decal option has both. In this case 'sky grey' undersides, while P2923 VY-R is a very good candidate for for a Sky mix or substitute, see here www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234985915-raf-sky-grey/&do=findComment&comment=2054227 as P2923 has a non standard pattern, going up the cowling and over the wing leading edges, and up the rear fusleage, this is seen on several Hurricanes based at RAF Debden in July 1940, both of 85 and 17 Squadron, which shared the base, and is likely a quirk of their paint shop. unfortunately the builder here has trusted the Xtradecal instructions, which specify Sky Grey, which is just a guess on their part, and they also fail to note the non standard repaint, and they also get the code letters too narrow and the yellow roundel outer ring too narrow. They also come up with the weird idea the spinner is black with green stripes. 85 were using flight coloured spinners at this time, and "best guess" from this and tonal matches is Red with two white stripes. For more details on this and photos of the actual aircraft. www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234948380-hurricane-colour-question/&do=findComment&comment=1431441 for 20 plus photos of the real VY-R, and other 85 Sq planes, www.flickr.com/photos/144949377@N05/albums/72157704898371932 from a Life magazine photo shoot in July 1940 And, related, the 17 Sq photos www.flickr.com/photos/144949377@N05/albums/72157678154026658 If you look carefully you can see 17 Sq Hurricanes in the background of the 85 Sq shots and vice versa. The unique nose/leading edge and rear fuselage demarcation is seen on VY-R, VY-K, VY-H, and likely VY-N, and on YB-A, YB-C and YB-W of 17 Sq. One suggestion for the kit, if you dry fit the main spars into the wing, using the upper and lower parts taped together this will ensure they are all aligned before assembling the cockpit, which can be built on this ensuring the cockpit parts remain square and true. new tool Airfix kit are noted for being very tight fitting, a coat of paint can throw off a join, but their plastic is too soft, and it far to easy to mis-align parts, causing problem with wing to fuselage join. I have seen several build where the is a step under the lower wing/lower cowling join. Personally I really do not like the assembly sequence, and it also means that there are compromises on the detail on the upper parts of the cockpit framework, the 'consoles' on the port side are missing. The Airfix kit has a few other glitches, most inherited from the 72nd fabric wing kit. The definitive 1/48th Hurricane kit is yet to be done, though Arma Hobby have announced a 1/48th IIc kit, and their 1/72nd kits are best 72nd Hurricane kits. Hope of use or interest

The annoying thing about airfix is the new kits are for the most part designed well with good detail, probably spent millions on that But then get the kit moulded by third rate factory and no QC at all And think broken parts, warped parts, sink marks are all accceptable! I don't buy airfix anymore for that reason
