Killarney Provincial Park is located at the north end of Georgian Bay, in Canadian province of Ontario. It encompasses a vast wilderness area of wetlands, forests and mountains.
This video filmed in October 2018 and was my first time visiting the area as a solo backcountry camping trip.
The weather was cold and wet and temperatures dropped below freezing overnight.
I really enjoyed this trip. The unique landscape, and meeting other lifelong canoe trippers was a great experience.
I hope you enjoy this short wilderness canoe camping (trip-report style) video of my backcountry canoe trip of Killarney.
If you do, please give it the thumbs up and leave a comment.
Thanks - Jason

Hey everyone, I hope you like this video, it was filmed a while ago back in October but I've been super busy and putting off getting it online. This was one of my favorite all time trips.

Hi Jason. Glad that you finally share your Killarney trip. Though you wasn't able to film as it was a cold and rainy trip for the most part of ours. Or maybe you will no longer upload it as your video about your camera and other people (titled like so) came out before this. We met outside the park office. I was surprise as well when I saw you and thought it's very slim to get to meet the KZfaqrs I follow along in backcountry trip like that. I noticed your canoe first, not to mention I admire your canoe, I think it's beautiful, and said to myself there's is no way Jason is here!! Our trip is a bit of experience I can say. We were booked for 5 nights but unfortunately we stayed 4 nights only. 1st day was very nice, and that's the only day we got sun, the rest was on and off rain, cold, windy. We got to our 1st campsite all the way to OSA in pitch dark. Most campsites were occupied and had no choice to stay whatever is available. And it's funny enough to share this, when we got to the only site available, there was a burnt 3-4 ft log on the ground in the dark. Thought it was a bear! It was scary! We were hungry and exhausted and a burnt log was not a good surprise. On the bright side, we enjoyed Killarney. Definitely going back on warmer whether. Water is so pristine, mountains and fall foliage was just spectacular and breath-taking. We hiked "The Crack" view from up there was something special. Glad we did that. Your trip was very unique, meeting Richard and Pat was just amazing! And their story how they became the owner of the property was interesting and entertaining. Sorry for a very long comment.. Great video quality to watch as always and looking forward for the next. Cinematic it is! Happy Holidays to you and family! Maricar

Mary! :) or is it Maricar? So good to hear from you. It was a really damp weekend. Thanksgiving weekend is one of my favorite weekends to camp but the weather is always challenging. Sounds like you had the type of trip I love to have... full of life. It was also a really special moment meeting you and set a tone for the trip. Thanks for saying hi.

No worries Simon. Keep up the good work. The mandolin was a bit of an extra to pack along but without any major portages well worth it (being alone).

Really enjoy your work. At first, thought the videos pace was a bit slow but I think it’s just the pace of life being too fast. This video helped remind me why I love paddle trips, it’s the slow pace allowing you to take it all in. You gotta stop and enjoy the little things. My Bearanoia was kicking in when you got to that last site and the twigs were cracking.

awesome video Jason. glad you carry bear spray. i have the same fear as you with bears. any noise i hear i think is a bear. bears are my favorite animal but i get the spooks while camping. i carry a can of bear spray. i find a couple shots of whisky calm the nerves around night camping :) fluid in your ear can cause that floaty dizzy feeling. I've had it before. also cold winds in my ears cause pain. i feel it more when on my bicycle or on windy days. it hurts. i use solar lights when camping, small ones used for gardens, they come in handy around the camp and in my tent.

Great video Jason. Really sharp image. I get where you are coming from with the things that go snap in the woods. First two times I went solo camping, which were the first time I had camped in 40 or so years, there was a loud single crash in the woods in the middle of the night each time. I was wide awake listening for any sound that might have followed. Fortunately there were no sounds that followed so I figured these were trees or branches that fell. As to the campsite inspection, I went into Algonquin this summer and picked out a small island site (1/4 acre if that) figuring it would be too small to be of interest to animals. However, upon inspection I found a large quantity of bear scat concentrated in the middle of the island. Anyways, I didn't feel like sharing my picinic basket so I found another site. Keep up the great work.

It's funny because I remember a way back hearing someone once say that they always try to find a campsite on an island to avoid some wildlife - of course all of the animals swim better than any of us. Still, island sites are nice for their uniqueness. Nearly 40 years of doing back country camping and the snaps and bumps in the night still make me a bit edgy. :s

Jason , I watched your video of you building that sweet canoe. I want to build one just like it bit just not sure if my time and putcomenwould be sufficient. Do you make and sell any of your canoes ? I was comparing weight to the pack blast and light cankes and really that canker is perfect that you use in this video and you dint have to sit in the floor, but have a seat that is set to trim the boat and I just love that wood look. That and a canvas pack and I woumd feel like a time traveler 👌🕰🛶

A beautiful video Jason. What a remarkable encounter you had with Richard and Pat. They were absolutely delightful. By the way, the internationally adopted signal for a person to use when in an emergency is three short blasts in quick succession on a whistle, a horn, with a gun etc. I know it brought me help from other paddlers when on a wilderness trip in the interior of Algonquin. Jason, you should never have admitted on video that you didn't have a first aid kit because now I gotta' say this. . . Jason, always carry a first aid kit eh! 😃

Jason, have you ever used graphite powder on the bottom of your canoes? I've built 4 strippers and they all have graphite bottoms. With all that dragging over rock, I swear by it. Great video.

@@TrailguidePictures Yeah, take a look. It really helps the canoe to glide over obstacles (rocks). The down side is the bottom of the outside of the canoe is black, but that doesn't bother me since it's in the water and can't be seen. Keep up the good work! I love seeing wood canoes out in the woods.
