The Winds of October - Killarney Solo Canoe Trip - 4K

A chilly October 5 day solo canoeing and hiking adventure in Killarney.
I get a little bit of everything in this one, including the first snow of the season and some wicked winds that almost catch me out while crossing David Lake.
I hike up Silver Peak and take in the amazing 360 view from the top. The La Cloche Range is about 2.3 million years old and these peaks used to be higher than the Rocky Mountains!
Today, Silver Peak is about 550m high, similar to the CN Tower in TO.
I also try out a new shelter / full coverage tent for my hammock... The Onetigris Rockdomus.

THanks! I could probably have more subs I suppose but I just don't post that often and rarely do all those things you're supposed to do to get more subs 😄. I'm pretty busy with everything else in life and I like to take time with the edits etc. It's ok though, I like it when folks hear about it from other people and then come back if they like it. Thanks again for watching.

My man!!! Im gonna have to go see silver peak myself now… ;) that looked awesome! And yeah I felt the same way about into the wild. Great video Jason, well filmed, well edited, and pleasant to watch as always! I love the quick timelapse shots with the ambient music, it keeps things moving and interesting. There is a tap up there near the top. they installed it in 1936. it feeds all the lakes of Killarney. if it wasn't running there would just be big dry holes instead of lakes. I need new boots too. I just finished a 10 day in there and lost my big toenail on day 2 for the second time in 2 years. the other was while doing my first winter camp. I hate hiking boots. crafty way to start a fire! good thinking.

Yeah its a full day to get up there. It kicked my ass so much that I made a pact / resolution to get back in shape! I started Jan 1, weighed 170. 9 mos later I'm down to 145. I can't remember the last time I was this slim. Cardio / strength classes 3x a week and cutting out most carbs /added sugar has been the trick for me. I just need to maintain it now 😳 It's not bad actually. I did a big loop in algonquin a couple weeks back with lots of portages and I felt much lighter and stronger, not nearly as winded. Going to have to keep it up if I want to keep trippin!

thanks! I've had that kind of owl experience before / close to the hammock and hooting at night. It's amazing. Its a very throaty kind of call.. kind of freaky at close range.

Your 'choffee' is what I call a 'mocha grande', just a hot chocolate packet in your mug and pour in the coffee. "Frustation, with the elevation, I need a libation". You're almost as good a poet as you are a photographer. Fall is my favorite time of year and you captured it perfectly, beautifully. I busted out laughing at 'You're such a cairn". Good to see the Toasty Arme 3000 is still on duty. Thanks for sharing. it's mystical the way you present your trips.

Jason, I was impressed with your trip back across the lake in high winds. I also have a Keewaydin 15 but I have the pack boat version. If you can borrow one and try it in windy conditions I’d recommend that. It is far more stable and your profile in the wind is much lower . I hated giving up my canoe paddle for a kayak paddle but it does seem more efficient on open waters even in light winds. You videos are astounding artwork and I am thrilled each time one comes out. Keep paddling and sharing it with us!

It’s an art form and you guys exhibit it well! I’m a kayaker personally. Set up and geared up for pretty much anything salt and fresh. Quiet water only for me. Im 52. I’m trying to preserve myself for future adventures. I love your dialogue, your style, that cool ass hammock shelter and all the wildlife you were able to capture. This is a really cool channel and your a cool dude! Thank you for putting this out there for us to enjoy. Thank you for your hard-work in capturing this beautiful place. Take care NQU

Great video as always, did my first canoe trip on May long this year thanks to your channel as well as Lost Lakes and we actually did the David-Bell loop along with the hike to Silver Peak as well. Forecast called for rain Saturday to let off at 1pm se we did the hike anyways, turned out the rain did not stop the cloud just hung around Silver peak and spun back to our camp till about 9pm... by the time we hiked up to the peak we were actually in the cloud getting pelted by hail/snow. Wet gear till about Sunday evening... Can't wait to go back out next year and do it again lol

Haha... but seriously, that sucks. It's hit and miss right? part of the game. I had a good stretch there for a couple of years but this year I've had lots of damp days on all three trips I've done . All of the weeks that I chose not to go have been perfect weather. The hike up The Crack is well worth it... arguably a more picturesque trip. thanks for watching

All part of the adventure is the mindset we had, but spending 3 hours to hike up and not get the fantastic virew you had did not feel like it was worth it haha. Gonna try my luck with a little solo 3 days in Temagami before the white stuff comes down. Everytime you post a new video I get the itch again lol, keep up the good work.

Great video and i have been thinking of getting that Tigris hammock enclosure too and it seemed great. You mentioned about needing a new under quilt and not sure if you know about Little Shop of Hammocks who is a Canadian cottage vendor but I bought a new complete setup this year from them good to -5 and couldn’t be happier with the quality. I have got a lot of use out of it this year and still 8 days coming up in Algonquin in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video .

I make cowboy coffee with dark chocolate melted in, it started in the bush but followed me home. That's what I'm drinking now! What a perfect time of year. One of my favorite trips was during an oddly warm November, we broke through the first ice of the season and took advantage of melting temps to squeeze a few more days out of canoe season.

Nicely composed video, love the still photography. FYI if you care : A glacial erratic is glacially deposited rock differing from the type of rock native to the area in which it rests; the rocks on you hike, at your campsite and the surrounding area were all gneiss.

Yeah the CJ would have been a little more stable but I actually do feel fairly stable in that Keewaydin. It's so narrow that you can brace your legs firmly on either side and it gives you great control. It moves around more and is more tippy but I feel fairly confident in it because of that solid connection. Oct 22 sounds about right.

Nicely done. A couple of suggestions from an aging canoeist and hiker. First, get some hiking poles. They add stability and are especially valuable going downhill. Second, when you have an empty canoe it sometimes helps to add weight to the bottom. A dry bag filled with water or some big rocks. Getting weight down low in the canoe makes a big difference in tough conditions.
@brentkelly5445
@brentkelly5445 10 ай бұрын
i did that hike 2 years ago and picked up solid branches to use as poles(first time). i tore through it. just finished 10 days in there portaging the rugged south to north and back route, and grabbed branches again to use with pack (discovered knee issues 3 weeks ago) makes huge difference ...up/down/lateral stability.
@JasonIrwinTumblehome
@JasonIrwinTumblehome 10 ай бұрын
yup... a set of poles would have been particularly good on the final steep stretch (both up and down). I should have just made a pair! And yes again with some weight in canoe! I just didn't think it was going to get that swirly and powerful but I should have seen it.
