Is the SONY A7IV a professional video camera?
I fell this is a real discussion about the Sony A7IV being a professional video camera. I invited Chris Brockhurst and Josh Sattin to talk about their experience with the Sony A7IV in professional use and if they think it is a professional camera.
In my honest opinion a professional camera is a camera you would be able to take to a job and create professional work with it being paid or unpaid for a client or project for others to view.
The Sony A7IV is a professional camera but is it a professional video camera? Short answer is yes but long answer is that it has some cons to turn professionals away from this camera and using it for client work.
I personally love it and have had no issues what so ever with it and will continue to use it for a lot on my professional work.

So you do get overheating issues. Maybe not with the system internals but a camera too hot to hold it's a problem. A7III heating challenges caused several issues on the sensor causing burned pixels due to the heat exposure, reflecting this afterwards on the images taken by the camera.

Collaborating with other creators to talk about Sony A7IV is a great idea. I hope Sony is listening and will do something about it. I got mine last week and have been setting up, doing some tests. So far so good. I have had it running for more than 30 mins and no overheating. This is my first full-frame Sony camera. I chose this over A7Siii because of its price, photo capabilities, and video image quality.

Hi Jason, Josh, Chris, Good to see you all in one video and keeping it real! Am using both Canon and Sony as I’ve been trying to find a hybrid one body cam. I can share my experience using the Canon R5 and here’s how I’ve been dealing with it: 1) firstly, Canon put 3 barriers, most likely to protect their cinema line. 1 is legitimate, the other 2 are crippling: - Legit: camera is shooting at high frame rates and for a long time and so to protect the longevity and other components, it shuts down. This is good for longevity but not reliable for professional paid work; - Non-legit 1: 30min limit recording time. As a one person operator, this is another long list to worry about. The excuse of Euro tax went away awhile ago and Sony and Pana has had unlimited recording for past 2-3yrs+ (2+ for Sony and 3+ for Pana); - Non-legit 2: artificial timer which through several firmware updates, have improved it but still there even when it is not hot enough to warrant shutting down. Their response is being conservative like the speed limit when cars can go faster but most components are made to commercial and industrial temperatures so I don’t buy this one bit Having said that, I would break it up to short and long form recordings and the workarounds that I think will apply to Sony or any cameras that overheat as we cannot overcome thermal physics. Make a body that is small and water or weather proof, heat will be trapped and cannot escape so overheating will occur. For short form, you can: - No modification required: Use Tilta fan that is quite clever and it will cool down the backside where the LCD is located and in R5, the sensor where a lot of heat is generated. Also as Jason mentioned, the other two heat generated are the battery which I use dummy battery with external power. The other one is the memory cards (writing data to card); - Modification to body with passive cooling: Kolari Vision can make a mod to R5 for under $500 that doubles the recording times but removes your warranty. I haven’t had time to stop and send this in but planning to do it when I can spare some down time; - I haven’t tried using a battery grip to see if there is more surface area to alleviate heat to release; - I do make it a habit to turn on and off the R5 when not recording to give it time to cool down - Net/net: I get more than double the recording time published by Canon for the R5. Plenty for run and gun short form Long form recording: - Use an external recorder like the Ninja 5/5+ or other ones to bypass the processing workload required on high frame rate and/or long recording times Alternatively, when it doe overheat as I do forget to keep track of it all, I simply move from 4K HQ (8K oversampled to 4K) modes to 4K standard mode (with no artificial timer but still 30min recording limit), and I can keep recording without shutting down. Just turn up the saturation to try to match colors with 4K HQ mode. Now I have the A74 coming in a couple weeks and will make tests to see the limits and workarounds. Good luck and looking forward to more of your A74 contents!

Nice work Jason ;) I did not have any over heating issues with the A7 IV when I had it, but it is clear at this point that extended recording can cause overheating no matter how you have the camera set-up... Not everybody experiences this, but enough have regularly at this point. So for the true Pro video user I would say no, but for a somebody that doesn't need extended recording, it can certainly do the job extremely well. As far as photography goes, yeah it's a pro grade capable camera for sure I would say. Keep up the great work, Jay

Once the overheating setting is changed to high you shouldn't have any issues. I've shot full weddings at 4k 60 and no issues whatsoever. This included over 1 hour continuous on a tripod. The crop I can take as a complaint but having used this extensively I don't accept overheating as a real concern at all.

Hey Jason! Great video once again! I do still have one issue that is maybe not specific to the A7IV, to which I hope you might have an answer for. On certain rare run and gun occasions I still use AWB in video and it’s set to a shockless setting, but that makes it respond terribly slow. When I point my camera at a scene it takes about 5-10 seconds for the white balance to adjust. Is there any way to make it quicker without having to sacrifice a smooth WB transition?

If you turn on the Auto temp something to High in the setting, the A74 is now able to record in a very long time. And I'm talking about even 4K 10bit, but you would need a faster card. For 1080p 4:2:2, you can record until the battery runs out. So I dont see any problem with overheating with the A74.

Having cameras overheat on paid gigs was the reason I bought the a7sIII and later the FX6. I recently bought the a7IV to use as my C cam on a 1 hour concert recording gig next month. I'm disappointed to hear that this camera can potentially overheat. It seemed like the perfect compliment to my other cameras, offering more resolution for stills and more reach with APS-C mode.

@vaidehiarts
@vaidehiarts Жыл бұрын
Instead of the A7S III, it might be better to have two a7 IV bodies, that would solve the overheating issue, and allow a dual lens setup in non-demanding circumstances for faster turnaround. But I think the bigger downsides for me are the crop in 4K 60P, and the absence of 4K 120P. Those are really key features and set the A7S III apart in my opinion. I have a Lumix S1, and the change in focal length and exposure is really annoying when going from Full Frame to Super 35 crop

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Think that overheating problem is also related to the high codec included in a small body as the A74’S one. But with an external recorder like the Ninja V, you can easily avoid the overheating since the processor will be less overcharged to deal with codecs 🙃

@@JasonMorrisphotocinemaYes, two cameras is often a must for most people. But it depends on the type of work. I film with two cameras for interviews, etc. But I also do a lot of social justice work - rallies, picket lines, marches. Outside. All sorts of crazy weather. And one camera. No videographer ever brings two cameras to those, even from the big news outlets - and not often Ninjas or dummy batteries either, because you'll likely have to run (or at least walk extremely quickly) with your setup.

honestly I was concerned about overheating as well, i specifically wanted a hybrid camera like the A7iv because i do both photo and am getting more into video. Just the other day (early October in NW Oregon) a friend and i shot a wedding. My friend was A cam since he's using the a7siii and i was B cam, we opted to shoot the whole wedding in 4k 60fps and the highest bitrate our cameras can shoot and mind you it was constant shooting of broll in clips of no more than 2 minutes at a time but it was constant. Screen was flipped out and temp set to high and most of the shooting was done outside in about 75 degrees F in sunny weather (warm but not hot, we were still sweating lol). We were both switching between gimbal and handheld the entire time for just about 7 and a half hours and im surprised to say the a7iv was dependable in my experience and never overheated during the whole day. I did however do a few stress tests on the camera 2 weeks prior to see the limitation in 4k 60 fps and i got about 50-55 minute clips of unlimited recording before it actually did overheat. But with how i shoot and in a real world scenario it wouldnt make sense to shoot 4k 60 in long intervals of time for something like an interview or a whole wedding ceremony. it would be better to stick to 4k 30fps or 24fps fro those longer intervals of recording. But I really do hope sony comes out with a recall or a firmware update to help those who i think have cameras from a bad batch. Cheers

The image of this camera is phenomenal. I own a xt4 and I’m so torn what I prefer more. The a7iv is excellent in low light with a full frame lens like that 24-70 f2.8 samyang and clean in high ISO if you know what you’re doing. First time I got the camera I was shooting slog 3 at 12,800 iso and it produced a lot of grain which cleared up once you put a lut on it. The camera has to be set up properly for you to enjoy it.

The reason I had to buy the a7 iv was because of the new MacBook Pro M1 laptop. I was gonna wait for the a7s 4, but it was the perfect time to buy the new MacBook so then I went ahead and just preordered the a 7 iv. I’m thankful for Sony because it seems like they like to give instead of put crippling limitations, understandably. So, experiencing Focus breathing compensation, 4K 4.2.2 10bit video in H.265 and smooth active stabilization, and most importantly the customizable buttons and dials, good enough battery life, slog3, I think even the premature overheating message was put there by Sony to make other camera companies feel good. Sony also advertises this camera as “Beyond basic” and the name “Hybrid” is very suitable! Looking forward to new lenses and cameras coming soon, very happy and satisfied being invested in the Sony eco system!

Hey Jason, hey everyone, I just had to come back and comment after my Quinceañera gig this past Saturday. Hear me out; I feel like the sony a7iv update helped with the overheating. I did a whole day Quinceañera event using 3 of my sony a7iv cameras, 2 for strictly 4k60 video and one strictly for photography. I was really nervous because the weather was 108 degrees fahrenheit in the California Central Valley. I am really glad to say that I had no problem at all, not even once did I get an overheating warning. I shot a 50 minute non-stop ceremony and then a 38 minute non-stop both at 4k60 with absolutely no problem. My wife an I were both sweating like hell, but the cameras did a great job keeping up. We did set umbrellas on top of the cameras just to keep sun light from hitting them directly, but trust me, it was still very hot and humid. I Just had to come back and say this. I now feel very confident about the Sony a7iv cameras and you should too.

OK, so, having read through a lot of the comments, steps to take to prevent overheating include: 1) open the screen, 2) use a dummy battery, 3) record in All-i mode to reduce in-camera processing. How about using an external monitor, like the Ninja V, to record (maybe in ProRes), instead of recording internally? Does that help prevent overheating when shooting very long takes (e.g. events)?

I have sony a7iv i bought it 1 month ago on my 1st shoot it did overheat alot but after changing some settings that you gave.. the problem is pretty much solved & as a cinematographer i don't shoot continusely i take few secs of shots so the a7iv doesn't heat if I'm in good room temperature. Now i can't afford sony a7siii and i take stills too so sony a7iv is the best option for me ! i really love this camera ! I hope the overheating will be solved in firmware update if it did then i would like to buy one more a7iv if it doesn't so I'll buy a7siii and put a7iv for my Camera B. I love your content and your reels too Love from India ❤️🇮🇳

nice video. love it ! I am mostly a photographer who needs a run and gun camera for video. As an hybrid shooter, I cannot consider a A7s3 or FX3 to be honest. 12MP is just too low and offers little to no flexibility. It also don't allow large prints (I did try the A7s, and A7sII). The A7IV seems like a perfect camera for mix workflow. 33MP is just about right to get sharp images from most contemporary lenses.
@kineticdanceacademylacey7541
@kineticdanceacademylacey7541 2 жыл бұрын
I agree and completely understand what you say, I went with the A7IV as well, but in all honesty , it depends on what you do, "pro" is so relative, if all you do is social media posts, then 12mp is more than adequate, not sure why these "this camera is not pro" "this camera is pro" titles (I know some or most are clickbait) exist besides that, you can use older generations of equipment for producing "pro" content for more than happy clients, it's the indian, not the arrow, as they saying goes...
@OfficialEthern1ty
@OfficialEthern1ty 2 жыл бұрын
@@kineticdanceacademylacey7541 You can definitely make great photo and pro content with a 12mp. But there is some limitation: 1. Limited cropping: Can't crop much on 12mp, which reduce versatility. 2. Many sony glasses have a lot of resolving power - so it is a bit of a shame to be wasting good quality glasses with a low MP sensor (on the plus size, legacy lenses might look better than on high MP cameras) 3. Low light could be an argument, but higher MP camera provide really good SNR on BSI sensor. 4. A7IV or 24mp+ now often an asp-c mode for their video settings, literally offering two different focal length for a single fast prime lens. But yes it all depends on the use case. Personally 20MP is probably the minimum I could work with. I personally use the GFX100s as my main camera, and the A7IV as my bcam and run and gun (to replace my Q2).

It's interesting with the overheating. We've got someone shooting out in Israel at the moment and he hasn't had any overheating issues however when I did an interview back here in the UK the other day it did start to overheat after 40 minutes. Maybe it's airflow rather than ambient temperature that matters.

I'm starting to wonder if continuous autofocus is contributing to the overheating issues people are having. The first youtube report was from a guy who said he was just adjusting the settings and looking at the menus. Well, the autofocus is still operating.. And its working overtime trying to focus on your lap as your handle the camera looking at menus. I've noticed mine get hot while doing the same thing.
@hafizmohtar6301
@hafizmohtar6301 2 жыл бұрын
This also happened to me.. When I was setting the menu on the a7iv (lens facing down on a mat) the camera shuts off after about 20mins - 30mins (not recording & temp already set to high). I notice the cont af was on. But on a shoot (mainly video, 4k xavc-s 30fps) the camera never overheats. It's hot but never overheats (no temp symbol). I rarely use cont af. I shoot motorsport, car restoration and vlogs on a daily. It seems fine running on prograde v90 cards. Btw I live in SEA. It's hot here 😅

I’ve had my A74 overheat on set (granted it was a theatre set with hot spotlights). My camera was in a teleprompter setup with the auto shutoff set to “standard”, and a Ninja V hooked up. Without even recording, the temperature warning came up. Once I started recording after a few minutes it shut off on me. Luckily, I switch the auto shutoff to “high” and the issue was gone. Do I worry about it in the future? Yes. Is there a part of me that wants to return it for a more reliable camera? Yes. I spent a lot of money on this camera and I expect it to perform as desired, but my only other option is spending more for an A7SIII or FX3. In quite the pickle

I’ve been using Sony Video Cameras for absolutely years and have noticed when I first got a Nex 7 camera for photos I didn’t particularly like the results.When Sony came out with the A6000 APSC camera I shot some video with it and apart from the fact it had no stabilisation the quality was in my view quite good . I’ve since gone through the range of FullFrame Alpha cameras and Lenses including GM lenses and my opinion is that the video quality of these cameras have got worse .Yes the choice of all the various autofocus modes have increased and all the gimmicks and bells and whistles have increased the image quality has deteriorated.I have made a test reel project on FCP which I add to every time I get a new camera and have noticed that at best it would be difficult to say there is any real improvement in the overall quality if anything it’s slightly worse .I have an 8 k tv 85 inch and it’s the same story viewing the transcribed file on my tv as on my iMac Pro . I had the A74 for a while and I didn’t know if I had a bad unit but found the colour science strange and not sharp using the FE24 mm GM l.4 lens . I purchased the A7R 5 and photo wise it’s better but video about the same . I had the first 4K Sony Commercial 4K video camera the AX100E with a 1inch censor and the picture quality is far better in my eyes . I’m not one of these lovers of dark or over bright movies . I think Sony are giving you so many different unnecessary options that before I start filming I’m never sure if I have the right settings . I now believe that most of Sony cameras are over hyped by KZfaq reviewers and are really quite disappointing in reality .
