Thanks for another great video. Here you totally answered the question I posted recently in your other video, about which part of the waveform gets compressed. Now I see how it makes sense to compress the voiceover, and then apply the limiter to minimize violations of True Peak. You're a great teacher - keep it up! And yes, I'm about to use it on a video of a hybrid meeting where the audio contains both the loud presenter waveform and the quieter audience questions waveforms. It should work great!

Hi Jason. This is very helpful. I learned a number of subtle improvements that I can apply to my videos. I have a question relating to wind noise reduction for my GoPro. Wind noise is often an issue on my backpacking videos. There are tons of videos that tell you to apply a low pass filter which helps to some extent but are there other techniques perhaps using the equalizer or expander tools to further remove the wind noise? Thanks for any suggestions. A video devoted to this challenge would be awesome!
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! Wind noises are a tough one, most of the time you can’t get rid of all of it. A low Pass filter can help, you could also try using a high pass filter to get rid of some of the rumble. The EQ can help as well, I would pick a point then boost it up and try and find the offending frequencies, then drop it out a little bit. There’s also third-party noise reduction plug-ins that might work good, I’m actually gonna be testing some out soon. Stay tuned because if I find a good one I’m gonna put a video out about it. 😜👍😁

Gracias.

It’s a shame that using the compression function doesn’t reflect back in the waveform. It seems that the visual feedback would make it easier to change the settings the correct the volume variation. I have used compression in Audacity and it does exactly this. Is there a way to show it in the waveform?

I'm doing talking head shows with an overhead shotgun, and this helped me get much better results beyond the presets! Thanks! One (terrible) tip - 10db on average is the standard of course, but youtubers are cheeky and 99% of the content out there has been boosted to the limit. So a 'well balanced' video will sound soft if someone clicks between videos... something to keep in mind. Also, simulating spatial audio works well, and if you're lazy, just export the whole timeline as a bin and reuse the same settings (assuming you didn't move your mike) between your vlogs.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 8 ай бұрын
Glad the video was helpful! I yeah ya on the -10db, but that's why you finalized and master for the loudness for the given platform. That will bring up everything so it's not too quiet. 😜

16:35 Do you apply those settings to the music or to the voice? I would expect slower release to mean more compression, so more reduced/farther away sound. If it is applied to the voice, then the voice is more reduced, if it is applied to the music, then the music is more reduced.

Hi Benjamin! Typically I edit my video then work w/ the audio after my video is edited together. I'll usually set my audio levels while I'm doing my initial edit, just to make sure it is loud enough. If you've got different locations, different voices, etc., I would separate them all into their own tracks so that you can make edits specific to each person, mic, environment, etc. Hope this helps!

Hi, I have a question. I am planning to make screen recording videos. I choose the OBS studio software for screen recording. So should I record my audio in OBS studio or should separately record my audio in other software like audacity and then sync it later with the screen recording? Which will give me better audio.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
You’re probably okay to record in OBS. That way everything is synced up and you don’t have to worry about it. I’ve used it for recording before, I’ve also use my other screen recording software the majority of the time and that works just fine. I don’t notice any difference in the program I use between recording directly into Resolve versus using screen recording program.

After so many of your videos I watched I now have a dubt: do I have to use the Compressor/Limiter on each audio tracks or just on the BUS track? I explain: - I first started by normalizing all audio tracks within youtube targets (-14 LUFS and -1 PEAK) - Then I moved on Fairlight and selected the BUS Dynamics. - On Compressor I changed the threshold, ratio , gain and limiter - Finally, always on BUS track, I chose a LIMITER plugin and put "threshold" to -2 dcb and adjust the gain. (not sure if this step was redundant with previous one) The final outcome it's not bad and by checking the loudness history (toggle automation) I see it's definitely close to my target (confirmed watching Loudness levels). However....I see that in very few occasions, one of my audio tracks, has peak target over "-2" and even higher than zero. I fear that KZfaq will compress and ruin everything. For this reason I ask if I have to use these dynamics not just for BUS track but for every tracks too.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 ай бұрын
Hi! There's nothing wrong with using the compressor/limiter on the bus, especially if you only have 1 audio track to work with. Essential then it's the same as doing it on the single track. However, if you have multiple tracks with audio, you may want to do it on individual tracks because it's likely that each audio might need some different settings. I like to set all my levels/dynamics, etc. on each track, then just use the master bus to do my mastering and meeting the loudness I want. But for basic projects, it's ok to do the work on the Bus if you are getting good results. 👍

Hi Jason, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a question; when I play around with volume & compression to set the levels to KZfaq's preferred (-14 LUFS/-1.5 TP), my meters go into the red (between -10 and -6). Do you any thoughts on this? Audio is really new to me, and I don't fully understand what I'm doing!

Hi mate, thank you for these videos, super helpful. I have a question, I am in post production on my film and I have already tackled and have a grasp on EQ notching but one aspect of dynamic compression has me stumped. The dynamics are track-based, my dialogue tracks are separated into each character/cast member, but from line to line or scene to scene the dialogue changes do to proximity to mic, location, and mic used..my question is, is there a way to work on dynamics clip to clip? If not, I’d imagine the only way to work around this is to use multiple tracks grouped into mic/cast/location? I hope this makes sense. I tried following along with you by choosing a few lines from a scene and it worked great, but then the same dynamic settings on another line didn’t work so great. Hoping you can help. Cheers
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! You don't have an option to work w/ dynamics on a single clip unless you applied an effect to the single clip. I would separate the scenes & actors into separate tracks so you can edit them as necessary. You can then send all of the same actors audio tracks to a bus and then apply some effects or anything else that they would all receive anyway. That way each track doesn't have the same effects, there's just one instance of an effect on the bus for that character. (this is assuming the settings would be the same for all of the actors tracks.) Does that make sense?
@kingkillproductions5739
@kingkillproductions5739 Жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski yeah that makes perfect sense, where any given effect is applied to a single characters dialogue that would work for the entire film I can send to a bus and apply it just once instead of for each of their tracks. The film doesn’t have a huge amount of dialogue, so although it’s more work I feel more comfortable at times working clip to clip. I appreciate your response, I’m still learning a lot about sound editing and it’s a huge learning curve. Thanks again!

@kingkillproductions5739 Жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski oh, also, I’ve been using the EQ a little differently too. Ive been applying the high and low pass filter to the entire track but then I EQ notch clip to clip, therefore I can target specific frequencies for each clip and still having up to 4 bands to work with. There’s no problem working like that is there? Although it obviously is a more tedious approach.

Jayson, do you have a video on how to adjust audio levels with one clip/section within a single track? I've created a voiceover and have had to go back and redo sections to correct aspects other than sound - like changing the copy or a stutter. This was done the same day, with the same mic, in the same position, however my voice seems really bassie/deep in one of the corrected sections. How do I correct just that one segment? Thank you

@@JasonYadlovski J, Thank you. Watched it and took cheat notes for future review. My question was not worded correctly. I'm doing a voiceover track for a project and 90% of the recording was great, (followed your instructions) but there were a few word bobbles and things that needed to be corrected. What I need to learn how to do is use your guide "make your audio sound professional 1&2 for JUST the re-done clip segments. I'm using the same mic (samson G-Track pro) and as best that I can remember in the same position as the first recording. I have cut out the parts that needed correcting and recorded new versions on a separate track. When they are corrected and match the main section I will slide them back into the missing segment of the 90% good track. Currently the redone tracks sound basey or low end and far less crisp than the good track. I'm not exactly sure what I did to correct the GOOD track - probably followed your instructions. Thank you very much. Added to all that I need to get the good and re-done sections to sound the same.

Is there a way to uncover all the changes that I made to the first track and then apply those changes to the "fixed" segments? Thank you

You can copy everything from one track onto the new track. I’m assuming you adjusted the EQ, the effects, some dynamics maybe. I’m not sure else what you would be changing that you wouldn’t be able to just see if you looked in Fairlight. If you adjust an individual clips, you can select a clip, go to the inspector, go to the effects section and see what effects you applied. Or see any other changes you may have changed only in the inspector. There shouldn’t be anything that’s hidden, you should be able to see all of it.

It may dip into the red a touch, but as long as the meter isn't getting pinned to the top or reaching the top, it should be fine. You can always add just a little more compression to grab those peaks.
