@@GrizzAxxemann Totally off topic, but my mother couldn't stand nutmeg. (For some reason this memory just popped into my head.) Long ago when she was still at home under my grandmother's care, sometime in the 1930s in the very poor South, Grannie made her daughters eat mass quantities of nutmeg for menstrual woes. My mother never mentioned any physical sensations caused by that, just that she never really wanted any nutmeg for the rest of her life.

I had to look it up too after hearing him mention whortleberries. I live in the Northern Rockies and what we all call whortleberry isn't even a whortleberry! Its all called grouse whortleberry, grouseberry, and littleleaf huckleberry. It's actually a species of huckleberry.

I always love going to Williamsburg in Virginia they have bakeries and taverns to dine in with some traditional food. One breakfast item is a ham biscuit made with Virginia salted ham it's so good but the kitchen they sell the items out of remind me of the space you have made to cook here rakes me back to when I was a kid. I can only imagine how it smells in there with the wood fire and everything cooking. Keep up the good work. I love history and I love food so this show has such a great combination of both and your craftsmanship is stellar.

I love the Fall season as well. Whether it's something like pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie even butternut squash soup or acorn squash or a hearty potato soup when it cooler outside. Walking around my neighborhood as a kid and the houses that had chimneys always had fires going and you could smell that in the fall air. This dish for Thanksgiving also looked great. I am going to have to try this. Have a good one.

This recipe is one I am definitely going to have on my Thanksgiving table this year. I think it might be nice to cook the peeled and cored apples in the oven with the sweet potatoes. The sugars would get nice and caramelized in the oven, too. You need to take a trip to Louisiana, my home state. We are just barely seeing the leaves change, and we certainly have an "autumnal" winter. The food is pretty awesome too. Happy holiday season to everyone

I discovered two years ago combining a Granny Smith apple with sweet potatoes with lots if cinnamon and pumpkin spice. I peel the potatoes cut if half inch slice, the cut the circle of apple in half. Then take a large roasting pot or glass bowl, you can do it in the microwave, cut sweet potatoes in half inches also, then I layer them starting with sweet potatoes with sprinkling of brown sugar over them and generous dusting of cinnamon.. Next layer is the tart apples since you bake or cook the peels they are soft. Repeat the spices of cinnamon and apple pie spice or pumpkin spice , the sprinkle of brown sugar. Start by cutting up a stick of butter in 1quarter inch, like mincing, little block size, drop or sprinkle those between the different layers, the butter creates a wonderful liquid “juice with the liquid from the apples combining with the spices. When half the cook time is thru, then pull the pot and stir up the layers. Bring ones towards the bottom and middle to the top you can tell where the sweet potatoe isn’t quite soft enough. Spoon the “spices juice” over the potatoes and apples on top. And bake, cook in microwave maybe a number 5 minutes. The smells will tell you when it’s done. If you aren’t heavy handed with the brown sugar, it carries a low glycemic count or tastes like homemade apple pie, the whole thing without eating larded crust, wasted calories. Give me the pie filling. I love Granny Smith so versatile and adaptable to variety of spices. Try mine out. See what you think.

My grandma used to make a sweet tater pie that was amazing! It was better than any pumpkin pie I have ever had. Sometimes she would make little fried pies with the filling.....those were my favorites. Mom said she used fresh honey and Damsons ( cooked and mashed ) in her filling. We used to have wild Damsons growing up around here when I was a kid. Fresh off the tree they were really bitter but made really good jams and jellies.

The use of the term "whortleberry" is interesting because it is more common to a couple of European relatives of the American blueberry. There is one species commonly called whortleberry that is native to North America and that is the bog whortleberry. It goes by a couple of other common names, but the scientific is Vaccinium uliginosum. Thank you for you patience in letting me geek out in my specialty!

It is the most heartwarming thing to me when I see someone having such a love in history, in knowledge, and sharing that love to all. All (almost 2M at the time of writing) of you! P.S. I'm currently writing on one of your videos for a college assignment.. I live in Devon, in the SW of the UK, edge of Dartmoor. Whortleberries grow wild and in some abundance on Dartmoor and other heathland areas, amongst the heather. They are a small (up to about 5mm diameter) berry, best likened to what you would today know as a Blueberry. In the last century, after the coming of the railway up to Princetown (yes, Hound of the Baskervilles territory!) women and children would take a day out up to the Moor and collect a basketful of berries, often using a broad-toothed comb. Then go sell them to a grocer back down in Plymouth. Given that a probable majority of seafarers and travellers to North America embarked from Plymouth and other Devon ports, the use of Whortleberries (and their name) was probably common. Today here most people have forgotten about them. They make a pleasant little snack in the Autumn while out hiking. Hope that's of interest!

First off, thank you for showing the recipe. Long story short, I HAVE to cook everything from scratch, so it helps me to read it. Also, one of the issues with old recipes is they tended to leave out ingredients or techniques so that they could serve “The best version” themselves. That said, this recipe read like a combination of the modern Pumpkin and Apple pies combined, which leaves me suspecting that more apple pie spices should be added, such as cinnamon, cloves, and grain of paradise, as well as more bread crumbs to give it a more bready consistency, like modern dressings have. Either way, thank you for posting this, it’s definitely this year’s experiment dish (there’s always one every year in this household)!
