This simple trick actually worked! When I would click on "Check For Updates" in the menu, I'd get a "Cannot update while running on a read-only volume" error message. Even though the app is located in the Applications folder. So I moved the app from the Applications folder to the Downloads folder, then moved it back to Applications. Clicking "Check For Updates" then worked normal again. Just make sure to move (not copy) the app by pressing the Command key while dragging.

It works!

There is also a "Check for updates" option when you click on the bottom left (Gear icon)

this works perfectly but I still find it funny that this is how to update VS code on Mac 😅😅😅

it doesn't work for me. perhaps it has to be in english mode? I got it working by just clicking check updates menu on the bottom left corner gear wheel icon.

nowadays when dragging vs code rom apps to downloads it simply makes an 'alias' in the downloads, it's not moving code anymore from applications :(

That doesn't work for me, because I can't drag and drop the app from Applications to Download; when I try it only create a "shortcut". To update the app, I have to download the latest version from the official site and install that.
