Thanks Jay, stay in the fight brother! I’ve popped staples too. It’s emotional. Thanks Rick. Looking forward to the masks.

I’m with you on this Rick, I do a single pass with 6% peroxide. The only thing I would’ve done differently on this particular book would be to remove the staples and separate the pages. I realize this is not for everybody and it’s not for the faint of heart. And there is the danger of over whitening. Peroxide definitely makes the pages more brittle, and I’ve found humidifying immediately after treatment seems to lessen the brittleness. Larry Flying L Comics

I echo many of the ideas and thinking below. On a book that feels/sounds brittle to start with I will do a light Immacuclean wipe without a rinse. Let air dry for 10+ minutes, then a cold press overnight between salvaged glass shelves with sheets of copy paper. I review the book again. Cleaning, light box with one dose of peroxide, and then in a fogging chamber for about an hour with the fog being a mix of water and calcium hydroxide (pickling lime.) Then I let it air dry overnight before pressing. I have definitely made spine splits worse, and stressed around staples every once in a while. But I am having fun... most of the time.

On a happier note... I have a fantastic Four #1 (Golden records reprint) that had a slightly off white (a little creamy) appearance on the cover. I used the light box with this one for two hours, 3% peroxide each hour and it came out GREAT!

Rick, I've had MASSIVE success with the lightbox. I RARELY use any peroxide, just the DI H2O, so i've not seen any damage to my books. I DO have a question on the ImmacuCube Washing Machine. I'm getting stains out of books like crazy, however, I am seeing slight shrinking of my covers. I thought you had mentioned that before, but I don't remember. Is there any fix for that? So to re-iterate, the blu lights have been AWESOME, so my question is on another subject in regards to shrinking of covers :)

Wow Bob that’s great thanks for sharing! Yeah what I do it place the cover between two piece of acrylic and also two pieces of remay paper with four spring clamps and let it dry like that. I don’t think I’ve made a video of that but I’ll make one!

Thanks for sharing, Jay and Rick! I don’t think we can blame chemicals for the popped staples and color breaks along the spine. Wasn’t it more due to the repeated opening, closing, brushing, and pressing of the book? Or do you think that the peroxide made it much more susceptible to damage?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics Жыл бұрын
It probably a combination of both the chemicals and the pressing. Peroxide certainly contributes to pan embrittlement, and the pressing can split brittle spines.

I'm wondering if his results would have been better if he had not used the peroxide at all. I'm also of the opinion that he might have taken it to far in to the white as my memory keeps telling me that the cover was slightly off white on the news stands and not a bright white at all.

Good input Jim. I find that some books can be whitened with no peroxide at all. But it takes about 12-15 hours and it’s subtle. I use 6% peroxide in only one dose to limit exposure. Additionally, I’m finding that it’s easy to overdo it and make books look ridiculously white. Sometime you just have to live with what you can get. Lastly a custom mask for a particular stain has been a godsend. Really limits how much peroxide you have to add and where it is added!

@@ImmaculateComics This is where my age might give me an advantage over many of the younger collectors. I remember how many of the comics looked when they were new. The white's and colors we have now are so much more vivid than they were back in the sixties and seventies. So taking a comic from that time frame and trying to make it look like a new comic today, just should not be done. For peroxide, I really don't like using it on comics at all. As you know it is a mild acid so adding it to a comic that is already acidic is begging for trouble in my opinion. If he had taken steps to deacidify the book first it might have made a difference as well.
