This week Jay is once again joined by true Automotive Royalty, and we don't just mean this gorgeous 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre. Formula One Legend Jackie Stewart kicks off this episode before Jay does a DEEP DIVE on his personal car. Head of communications for Rolls-Royce Americas, Gerry Spahn, goes in depth with Jay before they are both joined by Paul Rusnak, the owner of Rusnak Auto Group in Pasadena, CA. Paul's dealership sold Jay this car.

its always hard to see a person getting old, but Jay still maintain his values and thoughts. But getting old means not staying in lane with a big car and not flooring it as he used to. He still stands up for motoring and what cars means to all of us regarding the paycheck, fun.

Something is wrong. Maybe just coincidence but he did now a bunch of things to provide for his wife in case his death precedes hers. He's slower, more deliberate, lost his quickness. Maybe heart issues. It almost breaks my heart. I dumped my cable tv in 1990 because I hated TV. Only show I watched was Jay on the tonight show.

Years ago, I was waiting for a friend who was shopping on Colorado in Pasadena. I didn't really feel like traipsing along, so I said we'd meet later and I walked down the street and into Rusnak to have a look at the first new Phantom of the BMW era. Now, like most people in the world, I couldn't begin to afford one, but I was treated like a valued customer, given a complete tour of the Phantom they had in the showroom and we had a great talk about cars in general and Rolls-Royce in particular. That's customer service. You never know who you have in your business and how their fortunes might change. Fast forward to the Napa launch of the Spectre. I'm walking into Railroad Square in Santa Rosa, past the Hyatt Regency where two huge transporters are disgorging Cullinans, Ghosts and Phantoms. On my way back home, I strike up a conversation with a gentleman who's overseeing his charges in the parking lot. The RR employees and crew were staying in the hotel and the cars were for potential customer drives. More great conversation and a tour of a Cullinan. They hire some great people at Goodwood.

I had a similar experience at a Car Show when a Sales/Co Rep talked with me about the BMW 850 and again at a Boat Show (with plenty of high end Craft) when a one boat maker company rep. told me about a guy who marched in in jeans and a T-shirt, got a tour, looked it over for a little longer, asked "How much?" and wrote a check immediately. They called the Bank. The Bank said "Whatever the amount he writes, we'll cash it.". There you have it. You can't be arrogant, you can't be window shopping, you can't demand their time but there are people who exude more than a passing interest and all the stories of "and I sold them one" make good sales reps cautious about being dismissive of the respectful and genuinely interested/informed person.

Hi Jay, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing the video. Your purchase of the Rolls-Royce Spectre really caught my interest. I wasn't particularly into EVs before, but seeing you with this car opened my mind. Over the past week, I've been researching it, and I now think it's the best EV out there in terms of quality, elegance, grace, and luxury. I’m definitely getting one. To anyone who dreams of owning a car like this: you can absolutely achieve it. All you need is a burning desire and a solid plan. Whether it takes a week, a month, a year, or ten years, you can make it happen. I'm 1000% committed to getting one myself in the near future. I liked his commentary on the pinstriped guy drinking scotch. I usually have pretty steady hands. But often when I go to solder something, it’s either under stressful or rushed conditions, or it’s just after a long day of work. As a sound engineer, I’m often pushed hard with little notice to get something done before a deadline that cannot be changed. To ask some big time rock star to wait is the same as asking to be fired. Somehow, while under the gun, is when I do my best work as a live sound guy. But after hours, when I’m casually taking the time to solder a mic or mic cable or some circuit board component in place, my hands might not be quite steady enough to do it right. So, a couple of pulls on the Jameson, a bit of the THC therapy, and I’m right as rain, and leave a nice clean solder connection which I’ll most likely never need to touch again. So that’s why the pin stripper takes a swig, I’m sure. You can’t have a shaky hand while drawing a perfect and narrow strip down the flank of a 20’ long car that costs $100,000-$1,000,000. A mild sedative does the trick.

When we was to do our final exams as welders my mate was in a difficult situation. He had built a nice house like a cabin with big wooden logs and such, but got divorced. So he desperately needed the job as a welder, or he would not just loose his wife, but the house too. And all was depending on this final weld in the welding booth. With all that in his mind he was rightfully nervous. So, he got himself something helping him chill. Made the exam, got the job and could keep his beloved house. But to use drugs, legal or illegal, or alcohol to much for any reason is just not good. My missus is a high performance person and always get a lot of responsibilities at work. But the last few years she "needed" a drink or two (or a bottle or two) to calm down after work. Eventually the "ran into the wall", because the workload was just too much. Now she is on a long sick leave. We can have a glass once in a while but besides that she is sober. As with everything, it is a balance. "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." 1 Corinthians 6:12 Expedient adjective 1: suitable for achieving a particular end in a given circumstance 2: characterized by concern with what is opportune especially : governed by self-interest noun : something done or used to achieve a particular end usually quickly or temporarily : an expedient action or solution Me myself, I don't work as a welder no more. I manufacture $10,000 high end audio cables, as an ordinary job. Luckily I got steady hands... ;)

Man, I'm so glad Jay is still sharing videos like this. I feel like this is a landmark video on the channel. He bought (a very expensive) a car purely because he thought it was the perfect car for him and his wife at this stage of life and he wanted to experience/enjoy it. Rolls Royce was also a beginning of his interest in cars and he feels deeply connected to the brand. If anyone deserves one of these cars, it's Jay. I see and hear him in this more frail state and I am just heart warmed that he can share stories and jokes like this with us and chooses to do so through the channel. I think he's a bit better in this video. He's moving a bit more normally than in a lot of videos in the last year. He really appeared to be adjusting to his last couple of accidents. I will grant you than the "old man hunch" might be accurate. Then again, I think he kind of was that way back when as Dennis Miller said, "that Morrita movie". Yes, he was a lot younger but he moved around the same just more quickly. Still, my parents are around the same age as Jay and it is annoying and somewhat shocking when "age" all of a sudden hits them hard.

I just know there are many (myself included), that will get the biggest kick out of riding around together with you. Just let us look down that hood from either the front or back seat, and in sight of that hood ornament, while we listen to your choice of royalty-free music, have a bit of conversation (you're always a delight to listen too), and I'm certain, you'll enjoy all the accolades, views, likes, subscriptions & whatever else there is, that pleases KZfaq videographers. ~James 🌠

What Jay says about cars is exactly how I feel as a 29 year old (unpopular opinion) I don't see the point of cars like the Urus. I also like how he mentions the car isn't about showing off for him but its because he loves the car and the history he had with Rolls-Royce when he was younger. True car guy right there. Hopefully I get to have as many as him one day (currently on 5 cars) haha. It is a life long dream of mine to be able to commission a Rolls-Royce and hand pick every aspect of the car to my liking. Appreciating a car for craftsmanship design and quality instead of status. I also like the reference of BMW buyout and the fact they're open to talk about and how the two came together in what seems like a perfect match. Also very important they are still assembled in England even if they do have German parts on there :).

This is so cool.. Glad to see Jay enjoying his Spectre, and demonstrating how one could enjoy traditional luxury and elegance while at the same time embracing the absolute very peak of technology, all in the pursuit of a singular automotive experience. Over 10 years ago, when Tesla was first getting started, I remember thinking that the very first electric vehicles that ought to be brought to market first should be relatively heavy vehicles that would benefit from massive, instant, smooth torque -- and the two case uses that stood out to me immediately were the ultra-luxury cruisers such as Rolls Royces and Bentleys, and the other were the full-size pickup trucks and large SUVs. It took some time for them to come to market, but you can now buy silent, smooth, torquey ultra-lux models such as the Spectre, as well as Rivians and Lightnings, etc.

Jay Leno, after I finally finished watched this video yesterday, having seen/heard bits & pieces of it throughout the day, in between “regular life” of work & such, I got to thinking about this, your latest acquisition/ride & well, from my own personal experience of for what vehicles I’ve owned (@ 40 over the decades) the one “classic car” I’ve thus far been able to keep, as my very-longterm-restoration-project car, has been & is, my 1955 Buick Super 56R (2 Dr HT Rivera) w/factory a/c… this mentioned, & having known for decades that one of your personal favorite cars, has been your ‘55 Buick Roadmaster 72R. This new RR Spectra is an amazingly executed, highly refined gentleman’s vehicle, that which, after thinking about it some, does indeed harken back to various aspects of exactly what makes the mid 50’s GM cars so highly desirable, to this day.. per ride, feel, handling, sound-deadening, comfort, curb weight/height/width/length, sleeper-power or thrust, over all layout design &, styling.. nothing extremely excessive; all JUST RIGHT! And build quality? I’d argue the mid 50’s might have been the last timeframe of car ass’y line man’f’g “mass production” in general, done nearly as well as this modern car’s crafters’ care to methodical detail… I enjoy hearing/seeing you, enjoying life, to the fullest, for our entertainment & educational value, of allowing us an opportunity of sneak-peaking into the world of high-class auto man’f’g!!!

Jay had his moments when he was younger when he wasn't the nicest guy out there. He was occasionally a bit "snotty" in some of his early Jay Leno's Garage episodes, and the way he delt with Conan O'brien wasn't entirely above board. Having said that, nobody is perfect. Jay continued to mature throughout his career and has aged nicely from a human-being standpoint. Unlike other comedians such as Tim Allen and Seinfeld (who have continued down the "horse's patoot" path, getting worse the older they get), Jay has continued to mellow and improve himself as he has aged. He's a good example of how we can actually improve ourselves over time, if we just set that as a goal. He's been unshakably loyal to his wife Mavis and has never been into drugs/alcohol. Furthermore, he's never let his money go to his head, often acknowledging that many of the cars and work he has done costs an obscene amount of money, particularly for normal people. Jay is certainly worthy of our respect, in my book. 🙏

Years ago now &, only briefly, I owned TWO Renault Dauphine’s.. if I remember, they were either both from 1959 or, one was ‘58 & one was ‘59. Very interesting little cars those were! Still water cooled 4 banger, rear mounted, facing forwards to a radiator mounted directly behind rear seat cushion.. had cool louver air intakes built into their itty-bitty rear doors, that’d direct outside air, behind said cushion &, into front of radiator. One of them cars had push-button gear selection buttons on dash, still having a stick shifter. Can’t recall correct spelling but its clutch system was called a “Furlic” clutch, which, when the “D”-rive dash button was selected, incorporated a type of veritable resistor mechanism , connected too its carburetor linkage &, that “module” also had the Speedo cable run thru it.. effectively allowing the driver to “float” the gears, for when each most optimal gear selection should be made, an electromagnetic clutch would disengage, allowing next gear to fall in… the other car was just a standard manual clutch peddle type. I got those two cars back when I was about oh, 15 & well, was already by then, near 6’ tall! Stopped at 6’4”… was never really able to fit in those cars, lol.
