What they don't know is that would not even come close to funding an actual search. Not even remotely close. Specialist search dog teams, helicopter search (the fuel alone for a single helicopter is going to be more than that), the specialist police officers, the mountain rescue qualified teams, etc etc. 36 grand is laughably small, and that's assuming it even GETS to the people on the ground. Besides, they specifically asked for volunteers with in depth knowledge of the terrain, plus mountain rescue qualified, what do they expect? Most of the people with those kind of attributes are already going to be on the specialist teams already involved in the search. Add to that given how long its been he is probably dead. Assuming no other goings on then most people without training, and with no survival gear on them, out in the wild like that are unlikely to live more than a week. And the trained specialists know that, they are probably more focussed on finding a body now, and not to be brutal here, but a body aint going any place....

Thats nasty terrain, there is not much chance of anyone without proper training being able to survive almost two weeks up there, especially without any kind of survival equipment on them.... Though for a very different reason, thirty years ago I was in fact qualified Mountain Rescue, unfortunately an accident left me with permanent injuries that would mean I would be of no help out on that mountain these days, in fact I would be a liability, and potentially a danger to myself and my team.... So while it would hurt like hell.... I would not be on that mountain.... An unfortunate case of I am knowledgeable and experienced enough to know I would not be any use up there. Point is, there may be a reason he is not on that mountain. I am not willing to judge until I know there is no underlying reason it is not possible or advisable for him to be there.

The least they could have done was go up there with bottles of water and food to give to the helpers.

Why are they not involved? Look at them, they have never seen a mountain before. Masca mountains are INTIMIDATING for someone getting up there the first time. A lot of people coming in from the south hit the view point on top of Santiago del Teide and they turn around, when they see the continuation of the serpent road down the way. (Not defending them not searching, absolutely not, just saying they chickened out when they saw the mountains.) Brits come to Tenerife to watch football in the sun with a pint in hand, not to walk mountains.

They specifically asked for volunteers who know the terrain and are mountain rescue qualified. That leaves a pretty small pool of potential volunteers. Now add to that is, if it works the same as it does where I live (near the Brecon Beacons), then those volunteer Mountain Rescue teams will for the most part already be involved in the official part of the search. The local police and authorities rely heavily on local volunteer mountain rescue teams qualified in mountain rescue for searches like this, and those teams are integrated into the official search pretty much from the ground up.

I've on the same track with you. I have worked in Masca. Brits don't go missing in mountains in Tenerife. Especially not a 19 yr old who's been nonstop partying for 3 days. Imagine the hang over. Add 30 C sun in a place with no shade and 30-40 degree rising road. Nah.. Not a chance he walked out anywhere far where there isn't even roads, just dirt tracks. He is not in Masca.
