There are lots of references you guys have missed in this film. Why they are saying these particular dialogues and why scenes are constructed in that way These have some connections to real-life incidents that happened in India, specifically in Kerala. The theme is universal, but there are lots of nuances you will miss if you are not from India.

Totally understand that! But for the most part, domestic violence is a universal concept that everyone can relate to on some level.

In a society like India, we need such amped-up and on-the-face messaging. Such a marriage wouldn't even be considered 'abusive' here coz thats how patriarchal the public psyche is. I have seen men talking about this film "its very good, but don't watch it with your wife". Luckily, the Kerala audience lapped it up and this became one of the biggest blockbusters of last year. This made a greater impact than The Great Indian Kitchen.

Very interesting to hear your point of view and can totally understand why. The movie did really well, it was a tough subject to handle with the infusion of some comedy in the mix, but they pulled it off by still highlighting the core message of the movie. The director had to rewrite the script because of a very similar movie that made its rounds before which was very much appreicated called the Great Indian Kitchen addressing a very similar theme but with no humor involved. A great watch if you have not seen it and would highly recommend you do.

Really liked the last fight with the goons ,because in Indian films in general it's a ususal trope for the lead (hero) actor to beat some goons to pulp. Here they used that same trope and made it a celebration. Loved it.

Thank you for the context. I am guessing this trope is mostly famous for men to beat goons to a pulp so seeing a woman doing it was a twist on the concept. Cool idea! But still..... ;-)

@@CinemondoPodcast yes, you are right ., though there are some female hero centric films with action a few decades ago , this still stood out because of the stylised choreography and all. Btw Basil Joseph (the male lead) is the director of Minnal Murali (village super hero)

Worked really well at the box office and audience loved it and they managed to get the message across by engaging audience throughout the movie people were laughing in the theatres for most scenes.

Last fight is a parody of “mass masala movies” in which men beats so many bad guys at same time. The story and situations in the movie are more relatable to people from India than you. I liked the movie so much

I guess there is no better way to get a message across than to make people laugh. (The defenses of the psyche perhaps go down, since the audience are.. busy laughing) In that sense the movie is exceptional with what the writers did with it. It strikes that golden balance between its messaging and humour. The martial arts training part and fighting scenes are primarily used in the movie as a metaphor, that women need to stand up for themselves in such an household or a society, than take a metaphorical/ literal thrashing. The guy is shown humorously to be training in martial arts to fight his wife to drive home the fact how emotionally stunted he is, or the men he represents are. It is him trying to mend his overblown and unexamined sense of self in his own misguided ways since his machismo, and a lifetime of social misguidance, got a major kick in the underbelly by a woman who finally stood up for herself.

Great observations! I agree with you that it was shown in a humorous light to make it more palatable and entertaining which I think worked in some instances but not others. Overall well done but again, its really hard to find humor in this topic tho they gave it a really good try. ;-)

Pls check out "Gatta Kusthi". Very similar premise, slightly better writing. I think in that movie they pulled off the funny part and made it slightly more believable.

No I don't think so. I found some of the things in that movie very problematic. Aishwarya lakshmi nailed her role though.

the thing is ...its not really made for ppl outside india ofc. Infact some things do feel alienated for ppl in india (outside kerela) too. Not everyones cup of tea as they say And yeh the Dark humour was on the verge of crossing the line

We can all relate to domestic violence on some level. But it is possible to miss the intention of the humor depending on your experience

Exactly. I felt the film was toxic as well. The film could've tried to send her in a better way than for future confrontations. The guy was trash but we understand its because his environment and his role models are much worse. Rather than reforming him or even confronting him, she becoming happy by moving on with her life would have been the best outcome/revenge this movie could've given for women in toxic relationship.
