Lmao, shipping to Louisiana was more than the cost of the actual book. And I just found out that in Britain they call the 'Cart' a 'Basket'. Crazy the little linguistic diffences you find sometimes. Too bad the book isn't available on the American version of Amazon. I bought one, but it'd probably sell a lot more if it was available on our native version

My grandad was relatively high up in the quality control department at Austin and one day got called into the office and told to stop failing so many cars, his response was to tell them to build them better then, he was then given a quota of cars he was allowed to fail and not to go above that figure under any circumstances. The attitude was just to get them out of door no matter what. He says the things he had to let go was embarrassing and went against everything he loved as an engineer. With the attitude of ‘just get them out the door no matter what’ it’s no surprise what happened to the British mass car manufacturers

The attitude was very understandable. Get cars into the empty dealers' showrooms before Red Robbo calls the next strike and the lads cant be seen without their hands up. Before secret ballots and Robbo getting the sack for inciting a union takeover of BL, there were no Longbridge cars in dealers' forecourts, so everyone bought Fords (when possible) and Datsuns otherwise. Red Robbo should have been made a "Hero of The Soviet Union". He was the best Communist ever. By the time BL had a good partner in Honda and was making great cars, with no quality or labour issues , it was too late to get proper investment and thieving venture capitalists got rich while the workers got redundant and poor.

There is too much to unpack in this video to place into a comment but we could have listened to Rich all day long. Stand out moments for us included the discussion regarding the K-series engine (no we didn’t walk off to make a cup of tea) and the lovely story about the writings to a former owner “like a pen pal.” These videos James serve to offer both excellent quality watch material while also bringing more into the mix of your channel.

The story about the German bribe request reminded me of a time I worked for a German shipping company. We went to visit a ship that had just docked - the Captain cracked open the Aspach brandy - I was only 19 and thought it was all very civilised. The Captain then said, "so where do you get a girl around here?" The room just went silent and everyone ignored his question.

In the early 80's (I was15) we lived in a village outside of Luton, called upper sundon. Vauxhall were opening a 2nd paint line at the factory and a senior manager lived in the same village and had a son my age. He wanted some lads to work " off the books" over a weekend to clean the automated spray machines, ovens and lines which were brand new,but had collected dust and such in the building process. So a group of about 8 of us were ferried to the site in 2 cars to work 8 hours on friday/ Saturday and Sunday night for the sum of £50 cash each for 24 hours work. Anyway, while there we were given overalls and tack cloths ,shown were and what to clean and left to it. Well boys being boys, we got bored and decided to ' explore ' the bit of the site open to us. We discovered fully finished cars that started and ran😇, and we found lots of parts stations which didn't excite us until we landed on the radios (fancy Phillips units with digital displays and auto reverse dolby cassette players. So on the last night at the plant we took a couple of larger bags to hold our pack lunches in and " borrowed " 1 unit each. Long story short short I made £50 for 24 hours relatively easy work, a sit in and drive of all the top line vauxhalls at the time, My father got a top of the line Phillips radio cassette player for his 1973 ford escort 2 door estate, which was probably worth more than the escort. I told my dad the radio was a gift for my hard work and bless him,he believed me

Loved hearing these stories! I got all kinds of flashbacks to 2000 of me trashing a Ford Fiesta 1.25 on the beach somewhere on the west coast of Ireland. First time ever that i drove a RHD car in a country where people drive on the wrong 😉 side of the road. Lots of hilarious fun. I worked for a company that made maps for nav systems. We did quite some testing together with people from BMW and Renault. I recognise the differences in working culture. Working culture (this time Japanese) also shined through in the UK built Toyota Auris hybrid i used to drive. What a bloody good car that was! Most reliable car i ever owned.

Brilliant James. Absolutely loved this. I once had a summer job in a Rover dealer cleaning cars, delivering cars, driving people home that sort of thing. I could spend some time with stories from that experience, but one of the funniest was one of the mechanics cutting a hole in the roof of (I think) a Maestro to fit an aftermarket sunroof. Suffice it to say said sunroof and hole were not the same size! Measure twice and cut once was clearly something the mechanic learnt the hard way. 😁

Another brilliant video James, thank you for this, if I may can I share a rather apt anecdote from my early years in the workplace? Back in the mid ‘90’s my first job out of uni was to work for the AA down in Basingstoke. We used to collate breakdown stats on every vehicle that was worked on by the patrolmen. For every class of vehicle in all the benchmark reports, Rover were the worst for build quality and reliability, and Honda were top…in every class. Educated viewers will remember that in the 90’s, both Rovers and Hondas were essentially the same car. My memory was particularly jogged by the story of an elderly gentleman with his brand new Rover. As part of my induction I had to listen in to some of the call handlers in our Thatcham call centre. This chap had worked all his life from the age of 15, had never bought a new car his whole life. He’d just retired and wanted to treat himself to a brand new car with his pension lump sum. Yet here he was reduced to tears, broken down by the side of the M4 with a brand new car with the gearbox that had just let go with an explosion. Both he and his wife were visibly shaken and this chap was devastated. This is a chap (if my man maths is correct) was a child during WWII, survived the 60’s and had probably seen things that would destroy most of us and yet here he was, brought to tears by shoddy workmanship by a bunch of blithering Brummies. Best thing to ever happen to Rover is when it was shut down IMHO

I thoroughly enjoyed that I started work in the 1970s. Through the age of bodge up until they turned the workforce into f*****g machines working to targets, forgetting target should be reasonable and achievable, and "performance bonuses" where you always had to do more to achieve the level to get it and with moving targets regardless of how much work you actually pumped out. A couple of my personal favourites. Early 1980s Soltau training area driving a Chieftain main battle tank. The internal communications failed, so I had two lengths of Don 10 radio wire tied to my epaulettes. One length on the right one on the left. The commander guiding me by pulling on whichever side he wanted me to go. Back in the 80s again I was now working in an office in the days before computers. We had to write things on paper using an ancient tool called a pen. We had notification that the power was going to go off due to work down the road. I went to the manager and said it would be too dark to work after a certain time due to sun down. He said he would make a decision at the time. So it came to pass he looked around said it was "too dark" and the majority of the staff went home. What he failed to notice is I had lowered the blinds and partialy closed them...

Great video James. I really enjoyed the stories. Speaking of the Lemons race. There is a gentleman by the name of John Ficarra who has raced it quite a few times. And has some good stories too. He’s also a great historian on the subject of motor sports in general. You should check him out James. Again, awesome video!! Thanks for making it. Take care.

I bought a brand new MG Montego Turbo. I took it to a multistory carpark two weeks after receiving it and as you went down the ramps between floors the engine cut out. It did it every time . When you got to the level again the engine would start. I took it back to the garage. They checked it on the dyno and all was fine. Weve fixed it Sir! Running beautifully. Next week ,same car park and it cuts out. the car went back three times , same scenario. At the back of this garage was a ramp and I asked have you tried it on that ramp. No answer. So I ask them to do it and engine cuts out. Oh, thats strange? So ask as they had a ramp why did they not try the car on it . They apologized. gave me a courtesy car. Called out BL expert who couldn't find anything wrong. So car went back to Longbridge. In all they had the car three months. then they found the problem when five more MG Montego turbos had issues. The production line had run out of MG Montego Turbo fuel tanks so fitted standard non Turbo ones because they fitted and never told anyone. They operate at a different pressure. Thats British Leyland for you. So I bought a Toyota for my next car.

I've been into enough countries, sailed enough seas and listened to enough pub talks to know a pathological li.... story teller when I see one, but this was such top notch story telling that I watched the whole 100 minutes while being thoroughly entertained, and did not feel the need to skip even once. Thank you for this. :)

The tale about the K series is fascinating. Having raced the K series engine and have a ZR 160 I can see now why they are so fantastic in motorsport and in small cars. ROVER DID GET SOMETHING RIGHT!

the K series was meant to be a lean burn engine and would have been word beating! however the government of the time took a backhander from Germany who needed catalytic converters for Mercedes and BMW's large cars and the rest is history just like America and the TSR01!!!
