In my life I've always known Maserati existed, that they made some seriously cool cars, but also that they weren't cars many people were really brave enough to own. They drink like fish, depreciate like crazy and break all the time.
Having now owned one, I figured it would be a good time to look back on my ownership experience and ask how the car met the "expectations" of exotic Italian cars.

@@ApKieras I think it sounds better than the LFA. Much more melodic, the LFA is too waily, sounds like an F1 car which I guess some people love and it does sound great on a trackday but having an engine screaming in a high pitch when you're popping to the shops or cruising on the motorway would really get on my nerves after a while. This however I'd be revving up while stopped at a red light just to hear it sing.

@@jamesrobert4106 Like the LFA, It suits the car. In a Maserati Quattroporte (or a Porsche Panamera for example) it would be completely out of place. Like Jay pointed out, lap times are pointless in a car like this, and so is making them sound like race cars. There is a reason why Maserati ditched the flat plane crank when they borrowed this engine from Ferrari.

I bought a 2007 Auto 4.2 in 2011 for £28k with 40k on the clock. I’ve still got it now at 90k and loved every minute. Servicing is reasonable, cheap even with an excellent local dependent. And contrary to some other comments here I’ve had NO corrosion, other than a small amount of bubbling just at the underside of the door mirrors. The auto box is super reliable as is the engine. Spare parts ARE expensive - front discs and pads will cost you £1500. And on a 1000 round trip to and from Goodwood - Edinburgh I averaged just under 30mpg. If you’re tempted pile in. Great car.

Hi JayEmm, loving your content! I bought a QP new in 2008. It was the 4.2l with a ZF box. I loved it for 10 years until the bills got too much , then for 3 years I started to get angry at the thing. The last 3 years cost me £15,000 in servicing and fixing faults. One fault was the alarm that turned itself on automatically after 30 seconds but didn't actually lock the doors. Foskers , then McGrath Maserati both failed to find the fault. I wish I had known about Sports Italia as both Foskers and McGrath had my eyes out for any work they did. I did roughly 42,000 miles in my 13 years. I took it to Le Mans and even to the Nurburgring (a very pleasing 9 minutes 10 secs lap, I did used to race a 1963 Ford Galaxie so the Maser handled like a dream compared to that) Michelin tyres are far superior to the Pirelli's in my opinion, I wish I had changed brands a lot earlier. The heated seats I had in the front were superb. The demisting as you say is a joke. My battery would go dead after only 2/3 days which was very frustrating until I bought a trickle charger for it. Keep up the good work.

@@markplumtree1605 bought a car for a bargain many years ago... the battery would be flat in 4-5 days, and all it was, was the bonnet/hood rubber grommet missing. There was a transmission leak from the solid pressure end pipe to a brittle rubber section also, but long story short, I grab bargains like this yearly... best problems I've solved are old transmission oil when viscosity lowers and the cars go into limp mode... The QP5 I bought was a Singapore import, and no one wanted it, for fear of dreaded gremlins... apart from sticky buttons, it's a brilliant example with 34,000ks on the clock.

@@peterlattimore6013 I wouldn’t call it a bargain as I bought it brand new. To have so much rust underneath at the front and very leaky rear wheel arches at the back was very disappointing. As I said I loved it for ten years before the faults and bills mounted up. I drove it around town mostly so only averaged about 15mpg and that was driving it gently. It was once picked up by a driver from Joe Macari and he managed to race it back to their factory and achieve 7mpg. U.K. car tax is also nearly £600.00 which isn’t ideal. One of the other reasons I sold it was because of all the speed humps in my area, very tedious!

@@markplumtree1605 that's not bad tax compared to its native Italy. Any car above 250bhp pays a "Supertax" on top of normal tax for every KW above that power. For a new QP the total tax would be about 3500 Euros a year. The Supertax is gradually reduced as the car reaches 5, 10, 20 years old etc, but it's still managed to basically destroy the performance car market in Italy. Whoever came up with it should be bayoneted.

A very fair and accurate review - the seats offer no support whatsoever, and I suspect you didn't have the TPMS option checked which is a good thing... they're a nuisance. But all those things rapidly melt away when you hear that soundtrack in sport mode... it's magnificent and the harder you push it, the better it sounds. BTW - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is the best rubber for these, widely accepted that P-Zeros on this car don't perform well in the UK.

We found parts from 7 different brands (Alfa, FIAT, Volvo, Ford, etc.). Despite the Biturbo reputation the last 6 years it was dead reliable and didn't let me down once. We’d heard that Schumi was coming for the traditional pre race dinner with the Ferrari mechanics so me, a friend and some German fans were waiting. For 5 minutes we could hear this wailing engine snaking through the hills and trees, high pitched and getting the treatment from its driver. Then, in a silver quattroporte, rocks up this demure, rather short chap, no fat whatsoever and happy to shake hands with us all and do signatures. Charming and friendly to a fault! Fully agree with your observations on the Heating/Air conditioning...this issue alone was NEVER resolved. Sadly the "MAS" had to go, but if time and providence allow perhaps before I reach my "dotage" another would be seriously considered. Loved the fact that I could drive this onto my local Supermarket carpark, (with 2 very large Willow Trees, full of Nesting ROOKS), Rev the Engine and dissappear before the Parked Cars were covered in Rook C**p....joyous times...G.A.R.

I had a 07 Gransport, for 8 years it never let me down , put a full Larini back exhaust on it and it was wonderful. It was the 4.2 dry sump version of your engine. Yes the odd electrical gremlin which was cured by a restart and all lights cleared. Very practical really… during that sweet spot period when Ferrari were running the show, I sold it the minute I knew all the current crop and shape were coming out to take the brand down to 5 series BMW territory. They have been an absolute disaster for brand and just as a car really. Such a shame to see a brand with more history than even Ferrari get trashed.

I got my Masaerati almost a year ago and honstly I cant stop smiling everytime I get in to drive. It is spectacular!!! Had no reliable issues yet and surprisingly its not more expensive maintanence than my previous Infiniti. If you do drive it in Sport mode, as the reveiwer does, it can get a little thirsty but overall if you're a driver you are in for a super time!!!! I am Maserati for lifer!!!

Great review, be sure to thank the owner! Seriously, if you haven't seen it, watch the review of this car on Hagerty Revelations. The title says that it is "Scientifically proven to be an aphrodisiac". Seriously. They measured testosterone levels of men AND women after hearing this car. Listening to you talk, I find it hard to imagine you finding a replacement people mover that you will enjoy as much as this gorgeous piece of Italia. For perspective, I own (and genuinely LOVE) a 987 Boxster S, and a Model 3 Performance. Whenever you show this car, I STILL wind up going to Autotrader, and drooling a little.

Awesome sound capture vs inadequate sound for your Lexus GSF review. These QP sound good as they pass by. If I let go of my GSF, yes, I’d be looking at QP where existing Mas mechanic knew car and approved as daily for enthusiast.

I have owned a 1986 420 Biturbo for 8 years and loved it. Only used it as a second car, apart from a few weeks per year in summer. Bought it as a first owner car from a dealership in Italy, where it had been sitting in a warehouse for 12 years. 43.000 Kms on the clock at the time, it still looked and smelled new! I specifically went for the most basic Maserati there is: no electronic injection, no electronic ride adjustment, no intercoolers, no ABS, no power steering, a single exhaust and quite regular size tyres. It did have airconditioning, which was basically all I needed. It was dead cheap when I bought it, invested the same amount again to get it on the road and drove about 10.000 kms over 8 years without any problems worth mentioning. I remember vividly how it was about the most trustworthy and reliable car during a track event with the Maserati club. :D

I love them I just wished they'd reduce the parts price for older cars, that's the killer and it harms the residuals. From 2004 to 2017 I had 2 x 3200 GTs, a QP 4.2 GT and 2 x 4200 GTs and prob covered over 50k miles in them in total. Apart from the main power cable to the alternator chafing on the head casting on a 4200 GT and nearly setting the car on fire after stranding me, they never failed to get me from A to B. Servicing isn't ruinous but if any part is required that is unique to Maserati it costs a bloody fortune and takes about 2 weeks to arrive.

I've been liking the Quattroporte since I was 10, however, as I know more about big sedans, I think I'll get a W221 S500L if I can afford one, because I think a relaxing drive, a strong engine and a supple ride with okay handing is what I actually want a big luxury sedan to be, maybe that's because I've become more sophisticated after these 11 years

The heated seats were an option because they eliminated the stitching in the seat centres. I would always go online and spec a yellow one with black wheels and yellow calipers and the all black cabin with yellow stitching (and the all-important MC line extended carbon fibre) and if I ticked the heated/ventilated seats box, the yellow stitching in the seat centres would vanish, so I unticked it every time. Sadly nobody seems to have actually specced a real one in these colours for me to buy used now.

It really is one of my all time favourite cars, i hope it keeps serving you well and you keep enjoying it for a long time because what else is there from that brand thats better? Pitty about the seats since these are trimmed in alcantara so they are the grippiest setup they made, my only suggestion would be for you to start wearing corderoy pants and jackets to increase the friction coefficient, but that would compromise your trademark look and we don't want that...

The surprise here is how much like the Disco Volante that Clarkson drove (with the same engine) the Maserati sounds. All that's missing are the occasional burble with pops from the exhaust. I believe the Alfas are million dollar cars.

What an awesome, genuine and authentic review. Your car is stunning, I don't know what I like more the facelift of your generation or the 2014 version, my significant other has a 2014 GTS and it is badass, I look forward to the cold start every morning, which I'm sure my neighbor's despise LMAO No issues so far just some minor suspension work, but the dealer did mess up the windshield seal when replacing one and water leaked into the interior through the dash messed up the electronic shifter plus who knows what else.....Currently at Dealer ugh

You did a decent job of describing the delight in moving the big unit around country lanes in a manner that should not work. Anyone considering QPV - GET A DRIVE it is awesome. You have the second best niche modern maserati in the Sport GT-S. The only step up from there is the Stradale, which you will no doubt have seen, heard and witnessed from Matt at SportsMaserati. After 9 years with a QPV it still makes me grin, and surprises friends. My own (inferior) 2006 model has the admittedly smaller 4.2 which has 10% fewer HP. The cam action above 5000rpm is still astonishing in a big limo and is worth every pound spent / wasted on fuel. Thought that feature was only in the ealiest dry dumped cars, but seems not. For sure the ZF gearbox makes more sense in a huge car. The F1 system is a long way from being rubbish , as lazily re-toold by many journalists. The driver needs to adapt and use the paddles, same as the ZF. Maybe I have just been lucky but still on the same clutch, after 9 years and 50k miles. The same system is in the Stradale albeit with improved software. Will be watching to see which model tempts you next.

Thank you for your indepth personal review of ownership, audio, video, explanation, editing & content. Currently shopping for a 5th generation with ZF transmission, low miles & well kept. Consumers just don't understand a high performance vehicle, it needs to be revved & driven hard after the engine, transmission, differential, tires & brakes are warmed up. Consumers are quick to complain about price & availability of parts & service. Parts are expensive to inventory ( capital, time, real estate ) storing parts is diminishing returns on investment. Good quality expert service cost money.

11 years of owning a Maserati coupe "cambiocorsa"/ F1 shifting, absolute pleasure to drive, the experience is not beatable by an german car. We own multiple BMW's too which includes M's. We test driven a F10 M5 but it's just boring compared to a 100hp less Maserati 4200 coupe. Every time you put your foot down, the explosions resonate through the body of the car and through the seat, the engine note just gets better at every rev and makes you smile so much that you get a hurting face from smiling so much and whished you had a grumpy wife to stretch the muscles again. Those resonations are offcourse for germans, "verboten", which is why we were a bit sad after driving the F10 M5. In the 11 years we've had the 4200 coupe, we've only had a blown fuse for the seat heating twice and regular maintance. We are quite gentle with the car but took the car also 2 times from the Netherlands to Italy which offcourse was driven through Germany. The Autobahn is truly THE best place for these cars. They feel planted on the road, and easily, but truly easily cruise at 220 km/h. It's even so comfortable with it, that at these speeds, the engine finally hits it's optimal engine temperature which you won't reach at global max speeds of around 120 / 130km/h. Let me repeat, we've had no issues what so ever with our Maserati for 11 years, driven it purely solely in sport mode and hit 250+ km/h dozens of times for long stretches. 100+ Liter fuel tank, german autobahn and just floor it, wave goodbye to new Mercs and BMW, race that stranger in it's porsche, make them all look amazed when you pass them with 270km/h hill up, get facial cramps again and don't stop until the tank is empty again, then cry for a bit and repeat the cycle. "Italian cars are crap" is outdated, german cars break more often in my own experience working for a big VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat dealership and owning both multiple italian cars and german cars. In the end it's about driving pleasure which Maserati is just really good at. If you're into such an intalian car, look for a well known specialist or dealership, do your due diligence about common issues on forums, check it during the test drive, let the dealer / specialist look at it and if all good, buy and enjoy the thing.

I've been very seriously investigating one of these in the US as a replacement for my XJ8. I like big sedans (A8l 4.2l in my past also) and this seems like it would be the ticket. I think they sold much better in the US, but depreciated just as horribly.
