Fantastic and timely video Jay. I have asked my wife watch it to reassure her that I’m not nuts. A month ago I bought a 2004 645Ci convertible for £2300 (having seen five others). I have loved the E63/64 since I owned the coupe a few years ago and traded it in for next to nothing, and missed it every day. Now I’ve spent another £3200 on discs, hubs, wheels refurb (all buckled), tyres and a thorough, oh so thorough, service. Now no leaks, no blue smoke, precise steering and much improved MPG. Second hand refurbished parts are cheap (Idrive screen £35, replacement rear view mirror £23, a/c compressor £120). It’s an easy project if you have a friendly BMW specialist.m and you’re not afraid to have a go at a few things yourself. Some work still to do but nothing urgent. Let’s say I’ll spend £7000 for a mint convertible that just keeps getting compliments and leaves any hot hatch in the dust. And it’s ULEZ compliant so I can drive it to work and suffer (enjoy) the “mid life crisis” jibes.

Vavle stem seals go at low KM and are very expensive to replace, the factory big end bearings are very poor quality and prone to failure, for some bizarre reason known only to the idiots who designed it, they have an oil gallery passing through the alternator bracket that always leaks AND you can't remove the bracket without many hours of work - they all leak oil from the valve cover gaskets AND you can replace the gaskets and then a very short time later they will start leaking again, they have multiple problems with coolant transfer pipes, and like the oil passing through the alternator bracket, the design is so poor it's often many hours of work to pull a pile of stuff apart just to get at the leaking pipe. I’ve got one, almost identical save for the soft close doors and Individual stereo. I’ve had it for 4 years, it is everything you say and is one of the best kept secrets for second hand car out there. I bought a well maintained one and that makes a difference as regular oil and coolant changes with BMW recommend fluids will keep a lot of the problems mentioned at bay. You simply cannot beat the sound of a V8 when you start it up or under acceleration. It simply wouldn’t be produced now, as it would need turbocharging to reduce the emissions and improve the fuel consumption, all of which softens and reduces the aural sensations of a naturally aspirated V8. Keep up the good work. Quite simply they don’t make them like this anymore and I, for one, will be keeping mine until I’m either too old to drive it, or the oil wells run dry. An excellent video giving well needed praise to a great car, and all that for 10% of its original purchase price!!

Endless oil and coolant leaks, electricity bugs and software glitches all over, both received new batteries more than once and all of this happened under bmw warranty so it’s not like we bought old dogs. The issue today is that you won’t be able to get any kind of warranty on them as there’s no low milers left, meaning all that would’ve been out of pocket to the tune of about 16k if we had everything done at the main dealer. Always loved the 6. Would love a first gen 645ci coupe. Buyer beware, I’ve had an X5 with this engine and gearbox. Gearboxes need a service to keep them shifting smooth. If they are hanging and lurching, walk away. Engine will be leaking from rocker cover gasket, valve head covers and again beware valve head covers are plastic, and will warp and crack and deteriorate and they are about £1200 each side.

Happy with the look of the 6 series, both coupe and convertible, but what surprised me was how compromised the room was inside. I have got a 3 series E93 convertible and for rear occupants, it has proper seats. My six foot son is happy in the back of the 3 series. He wouldn't fit in the 6 series. Plus you cannot get away from the cloth roof, as at speed, noise is an issue.

Ever since watching that unforgettable Top Gear episode from 2004 in which James May tested the then-new 645Ci in Wales (and was later joined by Jeremy in the XKR and Richard in the 911 Carrera, and they drag raced on the Pendine Sands beach), I've counted the E63 6 Series, more specifically the aforementioned 645Ci, as one of my favourite BMWs ever. It looks so good (and yes, the rear is odd looking, but it has grown on me) and I also think it's so much more sensible in the real world compared to the M6, without really having many drawbacks.

I've never liked the look of these really but as they age the design is growing on me. Still wouldn't call it a good looking car but I'd no longer describe it as ugly. I considered one but in the end went for an early naturally aspirated x150 Jaguar XK, my shout for the best value gt under 10k. I absolutely love it, and that I would say is one of the best looking cars ever made, still turns heads wherever you take it.

Last year I bought a 2008 650i (coupe) based, in significant part on Jay's previous review because it sounded like everything I wanted; I wanted a big comfy 2+2 GT that wasn't going to cost me the earth in running and servicing. I have always liked the looks of the 6-Series, and I genuinely love mine and I am eternally grateful to Jay for his review back in the day. The way I categorise the 650i (And 645ci) is as a "Working-Man's Bentley Conti GT" because it does everything a Conti does, but without Bentley servicing costs, as it is "just" a BMW to service and maintain, which means it is relatively affordable to run as well as purchase. I do like the interior as well, mine has the cream leather, and the i-Drive does mean the interior is fairly minimal and so still feels modern with all the features you want in a car, bar a couple of give-aways. The N62 engine isn't even as bad for reliability as suggested. The niggles are expensive yes, but the advice I took (and happily repeat) is that it's a complex, high-tech engine and it NEEDS regular TLC, but if you give it proper, regular maintenance then it is a fairly reliable engine, and the coolant transfer pipe is mostly luck, there's no rhyme or reason that decides when/if it fails. Because I am an engineering nerd, I love the fact about the aerodynamic wind-tunnel work on the rear lights and I have absolutely been in plenty of "Oh crap I'm going WAY faster than I thought I was" moments.

From what I've read the Bentley is cheaper to maintain lol
@deaks25
@deaks25 Жыл бұрын
@@MRFUCKOFF202 "maintain" is a broad term so it depends what part of maintaining a car you're talking about, but I did compare to the Conti GT before I purchased my 650 as it made a good reference point and tyres, brakes and general servicing were all more expensive for the Bentley, and that's before taking into Bentley's generally requiring a specialist so my experience differs from what you've read. Plus there's also just the Cost of Entry, a good Conti GT will be a LOT more expensive than any non-M BMW. The relative value of the extra expense (ie is a Bentley worth the extra costs due to the badge) is going to depend a lot of personal opinion. I've also read the Conti GT isn't actually that reliable either, but that may be a similar case as the N62 engine in the BMW; ie issues occurring because of owners not maintaining the thing properly.
@MRFUCKOFF202
@MRFUCKOFF202 Жыл бұрын
@@deaks25 I was just going off that from my reading the W12 is pretty bulletproof but the N62 has a number of expensive issues rather than normal servicing. I'd expect tyres & brakes to be more on the Bentley, imagine it needs a couple more litres of oil, has 2 batteries and perhaps more filters. And yeah the cost of entry is about double or triple, although both are unlikely to depreciate much.

When I do eventually change it will likely be a Series 1 Cayenne Turbo, similar to my one in the UK that you featured a while ago. Lots of horsepower for the money, super practical, comfortable and in my mind more like a GT car than an SUV. Maybe I'm deluded. Anyway, my question; how do you think the 650i compares to both the XK and the Cayenne Turbo?
