Yes you right, Wanjo is overrated & agree you should try roadside stall nasi lemak, nasi lemak can be eaten in the morning, lunch or dinner.. Actually, that Sweet potato donut(Keria) is coating with coconut palm sugar but originally is coating with melted coarse sugar... Kuih/Kueh is a sweet & savoury snacks/cakes... 😊

Local Malay here.. usually I will taste the rice first to taste how "lemak" it is before starting to mix it little by little. The word "lemak" is more about how it tastes. Although lemak also means fat but "nasi lemak" cannot be translated as "fat rice", it should be coconut rice because the rice is cooked with coconut milk.. the more coconut milk the more "lemak" it tastes.

@@JayandKarolina Or enriched rice. The coconut milk should give it its fragrance. And I would try it on its own. You can leave off some of the sambal (usually a lot of onion/shallots and chilli) if you don't like it too hot.

Anybody from Wanjo reading the comments here? Wanjo need to do something now. There're lots of foreigners coming for Nasi Lemak, need to train English language to the Indonesian workers. By the way...the most traditional Nasi Lemak is just Sambal, had boil egg, peanuts and anchovies (might be optional). Rendang is best eat with Nasi Tomato not Nasi Lemak.

Why only in melaka nasi lemak is always served with kangkung in addition to bilis, timun and egg? 😂 I would recommend a fried egg instead of hard boiled egg for mat saleh as the latter is only eaten as a breakfast item in the west. Yes, they should have some English speaking staffs when there are foreign customers. These young staff don't even understand simple English 😢

Nasi lemak comes in 2 styles: 1. The prepacked basic coconut rice, anchovies, spicy sambal , 1/4 boiled egg , fried peanuts and cucumber and packed like a pyramid. 2. The heavier freestyle version where you get to pick additional dishes ie. Ayam/daging rendang, ayam goreng berempah ( spice fried fried) ,sotong (squid) in sambal, kerang (cockels ) in sambal, paru (beef lung) spiced fried , bergedil (a local version of friekedel , a meat and potato cutlet). The heavier meals version is eaten as complete main meal. The prepacked version is a quick breakfast or teatime, supper snack . The peanuts and anchovies adds the crunch factor in the combination when you mix it all. The sambal is mixed depending on how spicy you want your spoonful to be... Next time try the paru addition or the spice fried ayam berempah. Welcome to Malaysia 🇲🇾 😊

Tips: when u go to this restaurants, don't ask these intelectual questions. Just ask your viewers😅. Also, if you ask them 'what's the classic' of course they wont tell you because at the end of the day, it's all about revenue. The classic nasi lemak is the rice, boiled egg, cucumber, peanut & anchovies sambal.

The fork is to hold down your food and the spoon is to tear the meat off. Teh C is tea with Condensed milk. If you want just plain tea, you say" Teh O". If you don't want sugar in your tea, you just tell them" Teh O kosong". In the olden days, its usually eaten as breakfast but nowadays nasi lemak can be eaten anytime of the day. I think most of the workers there are migrant workers usually from Indonesia so they don't really understand English but if they were Malaysians they would be able to converse to you in English because English is a compulsory subject in school. Good example of Malaysian interaction with you guys are the kuih keria(sweet potato donut) sellers. You can see that they are quite fluent in English. FYI, its common for Malaysians to treat you food even if you are just asking.

A tip to enjoy nasi lemak. Taste the sambal first to identify the spiciness level. Even using the same recipes, no sambal is alike due to different types of chillies used. The amount of sambal you mix up also depends on your spice tolerance.

I'm a Malaysian and I don't like mixing rice. just take side dishes and rice and continue eating. there are who like to mix rice, sambal and side dishes first, but that will cause side dishes (such as rendang) to not taste well because they are already mixed with sambal.

in malaysia, sometime we always have joke when people ask where we are from, as example when the staff ask you where are you from, then you answer from UK ( that mean stand for United Kingdom ) but the women suddenly said that she also from UK but what she meant is she is from Ulu Kelang. We always have this jokes. Example LA stand for Los Angeles, but in Malaysia when you say LA it stand for Lebuh Ampang. But when you meet Kelantanese, if let say the person is from Kota Bharu, if you translate directly the meaning in English is Newcastle. Near Kota Bharu, there's a area name as Lundang, the jokes always be from London because it is sounded like same because of Lundang and London. This is Malaysian classic jokes and still until now people still use this jokes, anyway, hope you both happy in Malaysia!

You don't have to mix all the side dishes to eat nasi lemak. It depends on your taste. Some people don't like it too spicy, just take a little. The basic thing we eat is rice and the side dishes are just flavor enhancers. You may have a misunderstanding about eating boiled noodles or drinking an cendul which requires you to foul everything but not to eat Rice.

12:13 The name of the red drink is _sirap limau._ -_Sirap_ is rose syrup flavoured drink. -_Limau_ is lime or lime juice. You can order _sirap ais_ as is (it's a sweet drink), or you can order as the customer did, _sirap limau ais._ The tang of the lime juice brings freshness to the drink especially when you are vlogging during hot day. Another popular drinks with lime in it are of course, limau ais (iced lime juice) and _teh 'o ais limau_ (iced lime tea). I recommend the last one since I'm not much of a fan for sweet drinks. And don't forget to say _ikat tepi_ if you're ordering to go.

The authentic way for malaysian to eat nasi lemak is how it is wrapped for take away. That is in banana leaf and then wrap again with old newspaper cutting. A simple pack will cost you around rm1.00-1.50. For me personally every nasi lemak is different, especially the sambal. Most of the times the level of spicyness is 2-3 (on a scale of 10) but in some areas it could be 4 or even 6. I will get a little bit of sambal taste first before deciding what portion size of sambal per each spoon I could take. Normally I let the mixing to take place in my mouth. Meaning I will pick everything (not mixed), put it together and one scoop will go in. But hey, no worries there is no wrong or right there. Nobody will judge you. Its just rather up to the personal preferences. And fyi there is a place in KL known as Ulu Klang and the locals often joked around saying they are from UK.

Nasi lemak wanjo actually good for 1st timer. To at least enjoy eating before trying more nasi lemak. You can have 100 different kick of nasi lemak taste according to whom is the chef.. Majority of worker at wanjo not really good in english and very shy. They are normal worker. And employed so they can have work. If you go somewhere else, most of the time, the owner and family members is the one who also serving the food so you can enjoy having a good conversation with them. They run smaller stall. Wanjo quite big so only worker run them on the operation floor. Like mcd/kfc.. After you taste wanjo then you can try nasi lemak tanglin near national mosque and next nasi lemak in bangsar village.. And more. Remember when visit other state then the taste again change. Thats the beauty of malaysian food. Ipoh, penang, kedah, johor, etc has their own taste

It's true that the initial encounter with a dish can leave a lasting impression. Many other stalls are family-run, which allows for a more personal interaction with the owners while enjoying your meal which I think we enjoy the most! It's great to know that each region in Malaysia has its own distinct taste, and exploring the different states will open up a whole new world of flavours for us!

Its not far.. And before visit, watch some ikan bakar vlogs so you can enjoy the most handsome feeling eating ikan bakar handfully

you can eat it anytime. but cos u can add whatever u want really so...typically in the morning you can have it lighter without the spicy stuff some add fried chicken cos fried chicken. noon u can go heavier and add chicken curry, rendang, etc and night also can go more. some add veges some add others. Chinese and indian may cook it a little different too in terms of dishes that it goes along with. there is not right or wrong just preference and typically u eat it as u feel right. u can eat wihotu mixing n just put what u like on the spoon and eat it. some though like it a mess and mix it all the way. no right or wrong

I would always have hot tea myself. You should try the 'teh tarik' (pulled tea), where they pour the tea from a height to create a froth. You can also get ginger added: 'teh halia' (maybe a little like 'masala chai' which you should know from Jay's Indian heritage).

There is another way of mixing. Take bits of everything into 1 spoonful. Hence why we feed using spoon. It holds any rice-based food better. No need to mix all in the plate beforehand.
