Yee, Brazillian here, and basically same, but it's confusing, sometimes, it's said that the 3 subdivisions of america are in fact separate continents (Due to some cultural aspects and all), and Eurasia/Afro-Eurasia are just a landmass thing

It's a nice joke, but unfortunately it's *mostly* a myth. The IOC did define it that way for a brief period in the late 1940's, but it was dropped after nobody could find any evidence the creator of the flag intended it that way. Since then the colours have not been tied to any particular continents.

Nonsense. It was barely possible because of political reasons. The Northern route was complicated because the mongol and tatar empires roamed free there. The Southern route through modern Turkey was blocked by the Persians and later the Islamic empires. But all these areas are not blocked by mountains or sea. You can get to Central Asia(!) via Russia fast, and you can get to Persia easily too. In fact, the sea actually makes Asia more accessible.

Which you can do, you can go by rail from Portugal to South Vietnam in a single trip (transfers not withstanding), through Russian, Mongolia and China, among other train routes between the two continents. And as you should know, trains don't really like very steep angles, which means before the age of trains and cars, there were considerably flat and walkable routes, on foot and horseback, between the two "continents". Probably the same ones the Mongols used to harass people all the way up to Germany, a thing that did happen.

I would say that in Eurasia there are four distinct major cultural spheres: - East Asia: Cradle of civilisation was ancient China. Heavily influenced by Confucianism - South Asia: Cradle of civilisation was ancient India. Heavily influenced by Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism etc - Middle East: Cradle of civilisation was ancient Persia, Assyrians, Arab golden age etc. Heavily influenced by Islam - Europe: Cradle of civilisation was ancient Greece and Rome. Heavily influenced by Christianity One could also consider Southeast Asia as a fifth cultural sphere, but culturally in most ways they are like a mixture of the south asian and east asian spheres so I didn't count them as sufficiently distinct and unique enough to be their own separate cultural sphere but that's a subjective opinion

Here in Finland they teach about continents like Eurasia and subcontinents such as Europe and Asia. And those can further be split into regions, such as the Middle East, South Asia or Central Europe. Tectonics are taught separately.

"Regions of the world" is a lot more useful of a term. There's no use in grouping Italy, Scotland and Spain with China, Japan and Vietnam into a single continent - but there's also no way to defend Europe is a continent as we understand it. It's not even like Africa, that is connected only by a small peninsula. Europe is indistinguishable from Asia if you didn't already know it's supposed to be a continent.

Not really. Eurasia is so ridiculously big that, for most of history, there just wasn't any relation between China, India and Europe. Yeah, trade existed, but that was pretty much all about it. Spaniards, for example, didn't know shit about China, but they knew about England, Denmark or the Ottoman Empire. You'd never see many Portuguese people living in India, only a few merchants in coastal cities. You wouldn't expect a war between France and Mongolia, because what do they stand to win? There's also the Muslim world that was a big no-no for Christian Europe, so regions like Israel or Egypt were excluded from European history as soon as Islam became common. Of course, the borders get blurry and it's hard to determine where in Russia Europe stops, or whether Turkey is European or Asia. But there's definitely a division between Spain and China that is A LOT bigger than the division between the US and Colombia.

I have always found that break up to be idiotic. It is visually obvious were the division between the north and south American continents would be but looking at the map there is no distinction as to where the division between Asia and Europe is. If any definition of the continents combines north and south America - how can it not also separate Asia and Europe?

One thing i wonder about; since when is Istanbul where east meets west? I read Baya Ganyo, a Bulgarian book set around 1880, and it describes the main character coming back from Vienna as "He came back from Europe". Where did Europe end during Ottoman times? And where did it end in Byzantine times?

During the medieval times , most likely people didn't thought that the Eurasian Steppe stretching all the way to the Ural mountains was a part of Europe

North and South America make little cultural sense, having a middle man in Central America/Caribbean sorts that out and helps the already uses “North America” as a synonym for Anglo America.
